Remembering Leon Trotsky, The Man who saved Marxism from extinction
As part of remembering the memorial of Leon Trotsky, I felt that I need to add my perspective on the issue. I wanted to write earlier, but sadly, I have been really busy.
Leon Trotsky for me remains the most important figure in the history of Marxism, second to Marx, for different reasons. I will not dwell on his history to the details in defending Trotsky in the face of the Stalinist reactionaries; rather I will tackle the core issues of interest.
Trotsky started his activist youth as a Social Democrat and a man who despised Communism. He used to mock them and called them in his teenager life as the dry materialists. Eventually, when he was asked to do a play, he decided to create a play that rotates on a debate discussion between a Marxist and a Social Democrat. The more he thought in progress and change, the more he found himself as a Marxist rather a Social Democrat. Eventually, he became a Marxist and founded the South Russian Trade Union, and became its spearhead at the age of 18 only, till he was imprisoned.
Long live the Sciences of Marxism
Thank you Lev Davidovich Bronstein aka Leon Trotsky

Leon Trotsky's Revolutionary Toilet
Born Lev Davidovich Bronshtein, he changed his name to Leon Trotsky, derived from a German term for "defiance", during Czarist days. Lenin probably would have named him as his successor, but Lenin's stroke prevented that. Trotsky was a party theorist, and seems to have been closer to the original intent of Marx than any other prominent Soviet figure. When Stalin seized power, Trotsky left for exile in Mexico. He was sentenced to death in absentia, and was assassinated with an ice ax in Mexico City in 1940, by an agent of Stalin. You can tour his home in Mexico City, it's very swanky. The communist leaders were all for collectivism and "from each according to his abilities, to each according to their needs", so long as it didn't apply to them. Their needs-to-abilities ratios were always rather high. Pictured here is not only Leon Trotsky's toilet, but his tub and his hot-water heater! If you're really into Leon Trotsky trivia, and you would like to also see pictures of his typewriter, his kitchen, his rabbit hutches, his sombrero (!!), and lots more at his palatial Mexico City home, then see my page with more pictures from there.

7:LEON TROTSKY AND BEYOND
DURING THE TERRIBLE decades of the 1920s and 1940s when Stalin was committing barbarous crimes in the name of 'socialism', the lone voice of Leon Trotsky kept alive some of the basic elements of socialism from below. Stalin had returned to an ideology resembling authoritarian pre-Marxian socialism. Gone was socialism's democratic essence. Stalin's 'Marxism' was a variant of socialism from above. A bureaucratic elite was to oversee the transformation of a poor and backward country into a modern power, whatever the cost in human terms. That such a perspective could be called 'socialist' or 'communist' was a horrendous infamy. It was Trotsky's great virtue to insist against all odds that socialism was rooted in the struggle for human freedom. Furthermore, against the nationalistic notion of 'socialism in on country', Trotsky asserted that socialism could only come into being on a world scale. In so doing, he defended the uncompromising internationalism of Marx, Luxemburg and Lenin. Throughout the 1920s and until his death at the hands of Stalinist agent in 1940, Trotsky fought desperately to build a revolutionary socialist movement based on the principles of Marx and Lenin. At a time when Stalin's counter-revolution was reshaping Russia and the fascism of Hitler and Mussolini was sweeping across Europe, crushing workers' movements in its path, this was no mean task. Even if he had never developed the theory of the permanent revolution, never played a leading role in the revolution of 1917, nor built the Red Army, Trotsky's contribution to keeping alive the socialist flame during the 1930s would have insured him a lasting place in the history of international socialism.

MARXISM IN OUR TIME
by Leon Trotsky [Go to the 1994 introduction by Alan Woods and Ted Grant] [Go to Once again on the Crisis of Marxism (L.Trotsky)] In the United States, where a man who owns a million is referred to as being "worth" a million, market concepts have sunk in deeper than anywhere else. Until quite recently Americans gave very little thought to the nature of economic relations. In the land of the most powerful economic system economic theory continued to be exceedingly barren. Only the present deep-going crisis of American economy has bluntly confronted public opinion with the fundamental problems of capitalist society. In any event, whoever has not overcome the habit of uncritically accepting the ready-made ideological reflections of economic development, who-ever has not reasoned out, in the footsteps of Marx, the essential nature of the commodity as the basic cell of the capitalist organism, will prove to be forever incapable of scientifically comprehending the most important and the most acute manifestations of our epoch. Marx's Method Having established science as cognition of the objective recurrences of nature, man has tried stubbornly and persistently to exclude himself from science, reserving for himself special privileges in the shape of alleged intercourse with supersensory forces (religion), or with timeless moral precepts (idealism). Marx deprived man of these odious privileges definitely and forever, looking upon him as a natural link in the evolutionary process of material nature; upon human society as the organisation of production and distribution; upon capitalism as a stage in the development of human society.

Elected to the Bolshevik Party's Central Committee, he was an important leader of the October Revolution. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough to save him later on when he opposed the reactionary policies of Joseph Stalin, leading to his exile in 1927. While abroad he involved himself in attempts to create a new International Communist movement which would remain loyal to what he regarded as the original goals and principles of communism. In the years 1936, 1937, and 1938 Moscow held very public trials against many accused of treason, among the Trotsky who was also accused of being a ring-leader. Trotsky denied these charges and it is clear that Stalin orchestrated these trials for the sole purpose of purging the Communist Party of any who might be disloyal to him, including those who still had positive feelings towards Trotsky. Stalin's obsession with Trotsky as a possible rival continued unabated, especially after Trotsky published
