On a balmy summer evening in August 1940, a young man gained admittance to the study of Leon Trotsky's heavily guarded house near Mexico City. He asked Trotsky to read something he had written. While Trotsky was poring over his article, the visitor removed an alpine climbing axe from his overcoat and sank it into the great thinker's skull. The assassin, who called himself Jacson Mornard, was traveling with a forged Canadian passport and claimed to be in Mexico on business. In reality, he was a Stalinist agent who had been posing as the boyfriend of Trotsky's personal secretary in order to carry out his mission. Joseph Stalin had expelled Trotsky from Russia in 1929 for relentless criticism of his dictatorial regime and its corruption of Marxist ideals. For almost a decade, Trotsky was doomed to wander from country to country - Turkey, France, and Norway - under constant pressure from Stalinist elements. However, he continued speaking out in letters, essays and books, including his Diary in Exile and his monumental three-volume History of the Russian Revolution Finally, in 1936 Trotsky was granted asylum in Mexico and settled in Coyoacán on the outskirts of Mexico City. At the time, Mexico had a strong Communist party, but it, too, was divided into volatile Stalinist and anti-Stalinist factions. In the middle of this political hotbed, the aging revolutionary and his wife of many years, Natalia Sedova, established their first real home since leaving the Soviet Union.

In most circles the word "fascist" is a generic pejorative, an epithet that conveys a moral judgment rather than a description. We Americans have perhaps become so accustomed to this use of the word that we don't even think about it. We should, because "fascist" in this sense was specifically coined by the Communist revolutionary Leon Trotsky to identify all of his rivals, even Stalin, with Hitler and Mussolini – and with "the right." Its use reveals the undying influence of Trotsky. By calling Stalin a fascist, Trotsky and his followers could claim that "real" socialism is not a murderous ideology. They could further claim that all true threats to human dignity and freedom really come from the right. Although Trotsky himself had a rather fateful encounter with an icepick in 1940, Trotkyists today continue his fight on behalf of international social democracy. These days however, Trotskyists prefer to call themselves "neoconservatives." Over the past two months the word "Islamofascism" has gained currency.

TROTSKY, STRAUSS, AND THE NEOCONS
War Party's leftist and elitist roots exposed
T he War Party is playing defense these days, and for good reason: in Iraq, there is no sign of those "weapons of mass destruction," and in Washington, Congress is getting ready to launch an investigation into who lied about what – and why. Meanwhile, one American soldier is getting killed every other day , on average – weeks after Bush's declaration of "victory." This is what old King Pyrrhus had in mind when he said: "One more victory such as this, and we are done for." the neocon meme is really getting out there. Every day, it seems, there is a new article in some periodical not only pointing to them as the driving force behind the rush to war, but also detailing their ideological odyssey from left to right – and this is driving the neocons craaaazy . The result is that, within less than 24 hours, no less than four major polemics appeared denouncing this level of scrutiny as evidence of (what else?) "anti-Semitism."

An Ex-Maoist Looks at an Ex-Trotskyist:
On Irving Howe's Leon Trotsky by
Ian Williams A quarter of a century since he wrote it, Howe's biography of Trotsky raises far more questions than it can directly answer. How could a devoted democratic socialist describe a founder of the Bolshevik Party and thus of the Soviet state as "one of titans of the century," not least when the author also recognizes that Trotskyism is "without political or intellectual significance: a petrified ideology?" Coming from Britain to the United States, one cannot help but be impressed, or rather somewhat depressed, by the influence of Trotskyism on the American Left. Admittedly the Left in much of the world is now hardly at the apogee of its influence, in contrast to the hopes many of us had at the fall of Berlin Wall, when we imagined a new promise for the core collectivist values of democratic socialism, untrammeled by the sordid reality of "actually existing socialism" of the East European variety.

The essay below was written by Kwame M.A. Somburu of Socialist Action. The following quotes are from one of history’s greatest revolutionaries - Leon Trotsky. The first, he made as a twenty year old revolutionary. The second, at sixty-one, shortly before his brutal assassination in August 1940, on the orders of Joseph Stalin (dictator of the former Soviet Union): “As long as I breathe I hope. As long as I breathe I shall fight for the future, that radiant future, in which man, strong and beautiful, will become master of the drifting stream of his history and will direct it towards the boundless horizons of beauty, joy and happiness!” At the spectacle of blood and oppression which the 20th century had opened he exclaimed: “You - you are only the present.” “But whatever may be the circumstances of my death, I shall die with unshaken faith in the Communist future. This faith in man and in his future gives me even now such power of resistance as cannot be given by any religion . . . I can see the bright green strip of grass beneath the all and the clear blue sky above the wall, and sunlight everywhere. Life is beautiful. Let the future generations cleanse it of all evil, oppression, and violence, and enjoy it to the full.”

Trotsky, a pictorial biography.

Publisher: Iskra Research (Boston, USA) and SV-96 (Yekaterinburg, Russia); 176 pages, over 200 illustrations, color overleaf, hard book cover, 19 cm by 25 cm.
Description of the photo album in Russian
The Iskra Research Publishing House and David King proudly present, for the first time in Russian, an album entitled "Trotsky" which describes in photos and artistic illustrations the life and struggle of this leader of the October Revolution founder of the Soviet state and one of the greatest Marxists of the 20th century. This is the first illustrated publication about Leon Trotsky in the former Soviet Union. In spite of the official opening up of archives and the uncovering of numerous secrets during the recent period, Trotsky still remains one of the least known figures of Soviet history. As before the Perestroika, his life story and ideas are still under a virtual taboo, and slanderous myths about him continue to be peddled by the Russian establishment media and academia. The album was composed by David King, a British photographer, designer and art editor who has authored and designed other albums depicting Trotsky, the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917 and other pictorial works about Russia.

An anti-capitalist party for France?
In the struggle against Sarkozy's attacks on the working class, which are supported by the Parti Socialiste, French workers need a party of their own to give political expression to their struggles. The important question here is that the party has a clear goal of organising the working class as a class, and explicitly seeks to lead other sections of society opposed to the rule of capital in a struggle to replace it socialism, so any given programmatic differences should not be erected as barriers to unity. In a party which, unlike Lutte Ouvri¨re, allowed for free and full debate and platform rights, it would be possible to bring together people with different viewpoints yet still engaged in common struggle.
While revolutionary socialists should always be open about their politics and educate their activists and followers about their ideas, insistence on homogeneity, ultra-'hard' organisational discipline and bureaucratically excluding those who are not deemed to be the correct brand of 'Trotskyist' is no means by which to argue for Marxist ideas in the labour movement. It can only serve to cut off the self-proclaimed revolutionary ©lan as a sect without broad working class involvement. Posted by David Broder at

Revolutionary
Name at birth: Lev Davidovich Bronstein A key figure in the creation of the Soviet Union, Leon Trotsky was later unseated and expelled by the ruthless Joseph Stalin . As a young man Trotsky became a disciple of Karl Marx and a friend of future Bolshevik leader V.I. Lenin . A powerful writer and political thinker, Trotsky used his pen to oppose the rule of Czar Nicholas II and so spent much of his adult life in prison or in foreign exile, writing for communist newspapers and journals. He was Lenin's right-hand man in the Russian Revolution of 1917; Trotsky became commissar of war (1918-25) and organized the victorious Red Army in the civil war that followed. After the formation of the Soviet Union and then Lenin's death in 1924, Trotsky lost out in a power struggle with Stalin; he was exiled to Kazakhstan in 1927 and expelled to Turkey in 1929. In 1937 Trotsky settled in Mexico at the behest of artist Diego Rivera . He was assassinated at his villa in 1940 by a probable agent of Stalin, Ramon Mercader, who posed as a friend of Trotsky's and then killed him with the blow of an ice axe to his head.

Forty Years Since Leon Trotsky’s Assassination
Exile And Repression
Stalin conducts the struggle "on a different plane with different methods."
By Lynn Walsh, writing in 1980 This year is the fortieth anniversary of the death of Leon Trotsky. On 20 August, 1940, Trotsky was struck a fatal blow with an ice-pick by Ramon Mercader, an agent sent to Mexico by Stalin's secret police (the GPU) to murder the exiled revolutionary—alongside Lenin, the leader of the October revolution, the founder and leader of the Red Army, and the co-founder of the Third, Communist International. Trotsky in 1919 Trotsky's assassination was not just a malicious after-thought on the part of Stalin. It was the culmination of a systematic and bloody terror directed against a whole generation of Bolshevik leaders, and against the young revolutionaries of a second generation prepared to defend the genuine ideas of Marxism against the bureaucratic, repressive regime developing under Stalin.
