Liberia - First Civil War - 1989-1996
The Liberian Civil War, which was one of Africa's bloodiest, claimed the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians and further displaced a million others into refugee camps in neighboring countries. Elections are scheduled for 1991. But late in 1989, severe communal violence broke out after a failed coup attempt against Doe. Several hundred members of the Gio and Mano tribes, that had been ill-treated by Doe, revolted in the northeast. On December 24, 1989, a small band of Libyan-trained rebels led by Charles G. Taylor, invaded Liberia from the Ivory Coast. Taylor, Doe's former procurement chief, is an Americo-Liberian of both indigenous and Americo-Liberian ancestry. He graduated from Bentley College in Massachusetts and is said to have tastes that run to fine suits and silk ties. With explicit support from neighbouring African nations and a large section of Liberia's opposition, Taylor's National Patriotic Front rebels rapidly gained the support of Liberians because of the repressive nature of Samuel Doe and his government. Various unpredictable events, like the Gulf war and the consequent US disengagement from Liberia, coincided to turn this into a protracted civil war, with ultimately west African ECOMOG intervention. A final cease-fire and peace accord in 1996 was followed by the installation of a transitional government of all factional leaders.

Charles Taylor: Liberian Ex-President Goes on Trial
Landmark Step in Bringing Justice for Human Rights Violations
(The Hague, May 31, 2007) – The trial beginning June 4 of former Liberian President Charles Taylor for war crimes committed during Sierra Leone’s 11-year brutal armed conflict sends a strong signal that no one is above the law, Human Rights Watch said today. Taylor’s trial by the UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone will provide an important chance for victims to see justice done. The trial of a former president associated with human rights abuses across West Africa represents a break from the past. All too often, there has been no justice for victims of serious human rights violations. Taylor’s trial puts would-be perpetrators on notice.

(Photo: Issouf Sanogo / AFP-Getty Images) The giant wheel of justice has routed Charles G. Taylor, the former president of Liberia who had enjoyed asylum status in Calabar, Nigeria since 2003. Newly elected Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has finally requested that Taylor be handed over to Liberia so he can face trial in Sierra Leone on seventeen counts of war crimes against humanity in connection with his role in Liberia's decade-long civil war. Because Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo had earlier stressed that he would transfer Taylor only to Liberia's elected leader, he seemed reluctant to give up Taylor to a Western-led U. N. court. However, mounting international pressure, especially from the Unites States, forced him to wash his hands of Taylor. In a Meeting with President George W. Bush last week, Obasanjo agreed that he had been "Negligent to hand over Taylor to face justice." As Obasanjo traveled to meet with President Bush, Taylor mysteriously disappeared from his home in Calabar. Security at his compound reportedly had been lax. The whole world grew nervous, fearing that he could revamp a ploy to launch a fresh invasion of Liberia. His team of "Groana boys" and child soldiers had the impulse to mobilize. They are a seasoned dynamo in launching a reign of terror, a legacy that Liberians and their close neighbors remember well.

Air Line Pilot, April 2000, page 22
When Orville Wright died Jan. 30, 1948, Charles E. Taylor became the only surviving member of the three who built the first airplane. Charlie Taylor was the only employee and intimate associate of Wilbur and Orville Wright throughout the critical years. Without precedent or fanfare, Taylor built the engines for the Wright's first planes to their designs.
This article, written in 1948 while Taylor was living in retirement in California, was first published in Collier's, Dec. 25, 1948, and was reprinted in Air Line Pilot, December 1978. Taylor died Jan. 30, 1956, at the age of 88.

As usual, of course, there could be seen any time during the races a bunch of check-capped Early Birds out in front of everything, talking over the field mike, pinch-hitting on national hookups or just gassing away with fellow celebrities. There was the annual meeting at the Statler when all the EBs at the races got together at one and the same time, and the Tichenor dinner and EB guest Charlie Taylor , the world's No. 1 airplane and engine artisan.

Taylor, once one of Africa's most feared warlords, faces charges of rape, murder, mutilation and recruitment of child soldiers at the U.N.-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone, set up to try those most responsible for the 1991-2002 conflict. The 59-year-old has pleaded not guilty to all charges. "This is an important test for international justice ... it will have ramifications throughout the world," Prosecutor Stephen Rapp said on Friday of the trial he hopes will end decades of impunity for African strongmen. "There have been other cases involving chiefs of state that have not gone well ... But I am confident that we can present the case and show that it is possible to hold a chief of state responsible in a fair and just trial."

Taylor, who has been accused by human rights groups of masterminding regional conflicts, was indicted in June by a U.N.-backed war crimes court in neighboring Sierra Leone on charges he armed and trained rebels in exchange for diamonds. Charles Taylor's arrest in Nigeria on March 29 has quickly brightened prospects for bringing Liberia's former strongman to justice in the Special Court for Sierra Leone, where he is indicted and now in custody. What are the political implications of a trial for Liberia and West Africa, where Taylor bankrolled tremendous bloodshed? What are the charges and legal evidence against Taylor, and what will a trial look like? Was Taylor's arrest a victory for human rights groups, or will it undermine future efforts to remove dictators?

By MIKE CORDER
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER THE HAGUE, Netherlands Charles Taylor's defense attorney accused a key prosecution witness at the Liberian ex-president's war crimes trial Monday of falsely portraying himself as a close Taylor aide and of concocting evidence so prosecutors would keep paying his expenses. "I am suggesting to you that you inflated your role in order to lend a false credibility to your evidence," Courtenay Griffiths said as he completed more than two days of cross examination of former Taylor bodyguard Varmuyan Sherif. "That is not true," Sherif calmly replied. Sherif testified last week that Taylor breached a U.N. arms embargo to smuggle guns and ammunition to rebels in Sierra Leone during that country's brutal 10-year civil war, sometimes shipping weapons in rice sacks to avoid detection. He also called Taylor, the "father of the RUF," an acronym for the Revolutionary United Front, a Sierra Leone militia notorious for terrorizing civilians by chopping off limbs and decapitating the corpses of its enemies.

Liberia wants ex-president Charles Taylor for war crimes
CBC News Time may be running out for exiled Liberian warlord Charles Taylor, former president of the strife-torn West African nation once promoted as a homeland for U.S. blacks. Liberia has formally asked Nigeria, where Taylor has lived since 2003, to extradite him, news services reported on Friday. Taylor is accused of war crimes both in Liberia's 14-year civil war, which left hundreds of thousands of people dead and the country in ruins, and in a separate civil war in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

A tribunal in Sierra Leone wants to try him for selling diamonds and buying weapons for a rebel group that was notorious for hacking off civilians' arms and legs, the BBC reported. Nigeria's president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has refused to send Taylor to Sierra Leone, saying he would only be extradited after a request from an elected Liberian leader, Reuters reported. Now Obasanjo has acknowledged receiving such a request from Liberia's Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who took power in January as Africa's first elected woman president, but he does not seem to be in a hurry to act.
