Liberian President Charles Taylor does not have many friends. And for good reason . The dictator has been indicted by a U.N.-related court for crimes against humanity, has fomented armed rebellion across West Africa, and has been accused of rape, mass murder, using child soldiers, and other atrocities in his days as a militia leader. During President Bush's trip to Africa, this week, Liberia has been a top priority. He and other officials have repeatedly called for Taylor's resignation. "Until Charles Taylor is out of politics, there isn't going to be any stabilization of the situation in Liberia," National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said last week. "Charles Taylor needs to leave because Charles Taylor is the problem. And Charles Taylor is, by the way, not just a problem for Liberia. … [He] has been a source of insurrection and insurgency in surrounding countries. And the efforts to make stable places like Sierre Leone, in which the British are involved, are extremely important to the stability of West Africa. So Charles Taylor is a problem on a number of fronts."

July 25, 2003 Now, as Liberia's civil war spirals further out of control, Taylor is, once again, at the heart of the trouble. American President George Bush has demanded that Taylor leave Liberia before the United States considers sending peacekeepers to stabilize the West African country. The mercurial Taylor says he will only leave once peacekeepers arrive. Email to a Friend RELATED There is good reason for Taylor to stay. Liberia's on-again, off-again civil war has made him a very wealthy man. Therein lies the problem, experts say. As with many other African conflicts, Liberia's turmoil is caused mainly by the ambition and greed of men like Taylor. "Taylor is a man with brazen audacity," said Gabriel Williams, the Liberian author of Liberia: Heart of Darkness, who lives as an exile in Sacramento, California. "He's charismatic, charming, and extravagant. He's an influence peddler who knows what it takes to build a close net of loyalty and a solid support base around himself." Charles Taylor was born in 1948 to a family of Americo-Liberians, the elite minority that grew out of the former American slaves who emigrated to Liberia in the early 1800s.

(CBS) Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson accused President Bush of “undermining a Christian, Baptist president to bring in Muslim rebels” by asking Liberian President Charles Taylor, recently indicted for war crimes, to step down.
“How dare the president of the United States say to the duly elected president of another country, 'You've got to step down,'" Robertson said Monday on “The 700 Club,” broadcast from his Christian Broadcasting Network.
“It's one thing to say, we will give you money if you step down and we will give you troops if you step down, but just to order him to step down? He doesn't work for us.”

MOVIES: CONTEMPT The re-release of Godard's classic "Contempt" recalls a time when movies could do anything.
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard
Starring Brigitte Bardot, Michel Piccoli, Jack Palance and Fritz Lang
BY CHARLES TAYLOR in the credit sequence of "Contempt" Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film, re-released in a dazzling new Cinemascope print under the sponsorship of Martin Scorsese an imposing Cinemascope camera turns and points directly at us, as if we were somehow being called to witness a time when giants presided over the movies. "Contempt" evokes an era when the belief that movies mattered was an article of faith, when there seemed no turning back from the endless potential of movies, and when an eager (if not always large) audience existed for the directors ready to realize that potential. Nobody tried to get more of those possibilities on screen than Godard. "Contempt" is the sixth of the 15 movies he made between 1959 and 1967, a run still unequaled by any director since in its exploration and exhaustion of what movies could do. But "Contempt" has always seemed the misfit among the director's '60s work, his one foray into the world of glossy international co-production. The largeness of the film's scale (which has partly to do with the use of Cinemascope) is light-years away from the caught-on-the-run feel of "Breathless" or "Vivre Sa Vie." And the mournful, almost stately pace of "Contempt" contrasts sharply with the stylistic and intellectual hyperdrive Godard's equivalent for the feel of urban life that characterized his other films.

LONDON, England (CNN) Britain has promised to hold Liberia's Charles Taylor in jail if he is convicted of war crimes, paving the way for the West African country's former president to be tried in the Netherlands. Taylor will be the first African head of state in history to face war crimes charges. "I was delighted to be able to respond positively to the request of the United Nations secretary general that, should he be convicted, Charles Taylor serve his sentence in the UK," said British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett in a statement on Thursday. Beckett acknowledged that Taylor's presence in Sierra Leone, where he is prison, "remains a threat to peace in that region." Taylor's serving his sentence in Britain would be subject to parliament passing the necessary legislation, she said.

On Charles Taylor
The mainstream media can sometimes be uncanny. When the Liberian president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf visited Washington earlier this month, journalists were so eager to hear from her about Charles Taylor. The tyrant and ex-Liberian leader has been living in asylum in Calabar, a quiet seaside city in the South East of Nigeria. Taylor's presence in Calabar was part of a peace deal brokered by the United States government, the Nigerian president and the African Union in mid 2003 when Liberia was in the heat of a civil war. With Taylor in exile, Liberia successfully underwent a democratic transformation that saw United Nations-monitored free and fair elections held in late 2005.
Charles Taylor's asylum in Nigeria has always been something of a nudge. Before the tyrant went into exile, he was indicted by a United Nations court in Sierra Leone for war crimes. Taylor, it was said, had played a role in the Sierra Leonean war by backing the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels, which saw hundreds (and possibly thousands) of people dismembered. Of course, Charles Taylor denied the charges and presented himself as a sacrificial lamb—he boldly compared himself to Jesus Christ, a man who was hardly understood during his own time. Taylor's exile in Nigeria was a necessary evil. This was the same man who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Nigerian peacekeeping soldiers in the mid 90s. Yet, his exile was necessary to end the last Liberian civil war.
