Monday, Jan. 07, 2008 By LAUREN COMITEAU/THE HAGUE Former Liberian President Charles Taylor sits in the courtroom of the International Criminal Court Michael Kooren / Reuters Article Tools Print Email Reprints Sphere addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'timecom'; RSS The first witness in the long-postponed trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor wasn't invited to address the alleged atrocities that engendered war crimes charges, to which Taylor has pleaded innocent. Instead, he came to talk about "conflict" or "blood" diamonds. The heart of the prosecution's case is that Taylor terrorized the people of neighboring Sierra Leone in order to appropriate its diamond wealth for his own ends. Taylor is being tried on 11 counts in a special court in The Hague, including murder, rape, mutilation, and conscripting child soldiers in neighboring Sierra Leone.

TAYLOR, CHARLES STANFIELD (1808-1865). Charles Stanfield Taylor, member of the Texas Revolutionary Committee of Correspondence and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, qv was born in London, England, in 1808. His parents died while he was young, and he was reared by an uncle. Taylor immigrated to the United States in 1828, and from New York City he moved to Nacogdoches where he established a mercantile business. On April 1, 1830, he took his Mexican citizenship oath in Nacogdoches and stated that he was Catholic and unmarried at the time. Taylor participated in the battle of Nacogdoches qv and represented Nacogdoches in the Convention of 1832. qv In 1833 he moved to San Augustine, where he was elected alcalde on January 1, 1834. In summer 1834 he returned to Nacogdoches, and on April 25, 1835, he was appointed land commissioner for San Augustine and issued land titles until the Texas Revolution qv began. He was one of the four representatives from Nacogdoches at the Convention of 1836 qv and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Taylor left Texas after he signed the Declaration of Independence and stayed in Louisiana until the revolution was over. Two of his children died during this time. He was appointed chief justice of Nacogdoches County on December 20, 1836. In November 1838 he was nominated by President Sam Houston

Taylor's argument that Kantian liberalism (sometimes referred to as "liberalism-1") fails to adequately incorporate the politics of recognition is based on his assertion that liberalist philosophy ignores the fundamentally dialogical character of human life ( PR 32). Human identity, he argues, achieves fullness only in interaction with the world and with "significant others." This dialogical character, which implies a mutual interdependence, is not antithetical to one's ability to achieve individuality, but is rather a crucial aspect of it. Our awareness of this dialogical character, he argues, is a distinctive feature of the modern age, in which we are free to define ourselves and produce an "authentic" relation with the self, and in which we struggle to have our identities recognized in the context of our larger society. This new conception of freedom over our individuality, he notes, has been at the basis of what he calls the "politics of universalism" in which every individual is entitled to the same rights and opportunities as every other. However, Taylor argues, this politics of universalism is all too often conducted at the exclusion of a "politics of difference." Liberalism's emphasis on the sameness of all citizens, regardless of race, class, gender, etc., often comes into conflict with their need to be recognized in their uniqueness. Equal respect, he argues, is limited in liberal thought to the equal

Updates, 9/30: "Mungiu's film is not only an understated allegory for the inviolability of humanity and solidarity in times of profound crisis, but also a personal testament to a forgotten, recent past that has been suppressed from a society's collective consciousness in the wake of profound social transformation," writes acquarello . "In essence, rather than recreating an interesting, but archaic national artifact, the film remains contemporary and exceedingly relevant, not only in its attempt to exorcise and come to terms with an unreconciled history, but also as a cautionary tale on the preciousness of earned rights and personal freedoms that have been taken far too much for granted in a social climate of expected liberties, political herding, comparative wealth, and cultural apathy."

What does it mean to say that we live in a secular age? Almost everyone would agree that wein the West, at leastlargely do. And clearly the place of religion in our societies has changed profoundly in the last few centuries. In what will be a defining book for our time, Charles Taylor takes up the question of what these changes meanof what, precisely, happens when a society in which it is virtually impossible not to believe in God becomes one in which faith, even for the staunchest believer, is only one human possibility among others. Taylor, long one of our most insightful thinkers on such questions, offers a historical perspective. He examines the development in "Western Christendom" of those aspects of modernity which we call secular. What he describes is in fact not a single, continuous transformation, but a series of new departures, in which earlier forms of religious life have been dissolved or destabilized and new ones have been created. As we see here, today's secular world is characterized not by an absence of religionalthough in some societies religious belief and practice have markedly declinedbut rather by the continuing multiplication of new options, religious, spiritual, and anti-religious, which individuals and groups seize on in order to make sense of their lives and give shape to their spiritual aspirations.

    Hot Army Showers
January 24, 2008 by charlesgeorgetaylor The prelude to this short story begins at this post: http://charlestaylor.wordpress.com/2008/01/20/babyface/ The World War II barracks of Fliegerhorst Kaserne were equipped with communal showers. I was disappointed. How I longed for the day when I would have a medicine cabinet again where I could store my toothbrush, shaving gear, deodorant and anti-wrinkle serum. This was my new home-away-from home for the next three years and I had no choice but to shower with members of my platoon. I learned to control my ‘homosexual tenancies” in places where unsuspecting heterosexual men were defenseless without clothing. It seemed only fair to keep my eyes where they belong. Despite refusing to look, my eyes stole glances from time to time, like a sweet tooth in a mouth with no cavities. I was not the only one to ‘cruise’ in Army barracks showers. I know for a fact that it was difficult for other men to ignore what lurked under my black, leather shaving kit. Never at any moment during my military career did I get an erection while wet and naked next to my squad despite how much the men checked out what hangs here. Females with small breasts often claim that they are content being blessed with manageable bosoms. Often they are relived that they do not have the “extra luggage” to carry around; but when competition walks by– women with nice ones– they stick out their chests subconsciously in an effort to compete in a dog-eat-dog world. Men are no different.

The war crimes trial of Charles Taylor has formally reopened in The Hague, six months after it was suspended following a boycott by the former Liberian president who said he would not get a fair hearing. Taylor, 59, is accused of terrorising the people of Sierra Leone by orchestrating atrocities committed by militias known for hacking off their victims' limbs during the country's 10-year civil war that ended in 2003. The 11 charges against him include murder, rape, enslavement and conscripting child soldiers. Taylor , the first former African head of state to appear before an international tribunal, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. 'Blood diamond' Prosecutors say Taylor 's desire to get his hands on diamonds from Sierra Leone was one of the root causes of his alleged involvement in that country's civil war.
