Contact Us Philosopher of the Month May 2003 - Charles Taylor Dene Baker Charles Taylor's Sources of the Self established him as one of the paradigm figures of contemporary philosophy. Sources of the Self is a rarity in that it is a book of philosophy that achieved a wide readership outside of philosophical circles, as did his The Ethics of Authenticity , an extended version of the 1991 Massey lectures which were broadcast in November 1991 as part of CBC Radio's Ideas series. It is a vital part of understanding Taylor's approach to keep in mind that he is part of what is often called the 'neo-Aristotelian revival', a school of thought that has arisen, as much as for any other reason, out of a perceived failure of ethical thought in the post-Enlightenment world. Taylor's specific approach to this often focuses on a rejection of what he calls 'naturalism', 'by which I mean not just the view that man can be seen as part of nature - in one sense or other this would surely be accepted by everyone - but that the nature of which he is a part is to be understood according to the canons which emerged in the seventeenth-century revolution in natural science' (

President Charles Ghankay Taylor
The war-lord President
Part I Charles Taylor was born in Arthington, near Monrovia, on January 28, 1948. He was the third of 15 children of an Americo-Liberian father, Nelson Taylor. His mother, Zoe, was a Gola-woman. In 1972, Charles Taylor arrived in Massachusetts, USA, where he studied economics. In 1977 he graduated from Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During his College years he flirted with Marxist and Pan-African ideals and ideas though this did not prevent him of having a lavish-lifestyle which occasionally forced him to work in a factory, as a truck driver and as a mecanic to pay for his extravagant expenses. Charles Taylor also became involved in radical Liberian student politics, joined the Union of Liberian Associations (ULA), and already showed his leadership ambitions by becoming its national chairman. It was while being the national ULA chair that he led a demonstration of Liberian students against President Tolbert when the latter visited the USA in 1979. Tolbert challenged Taylor by inviting him to debate with him, a debate that was won by Charles Taylor. When Taylor, however, stated that he would take over the Liberian diplomatic mission in New York he was arrested and jailed. President Tolbert showed clemency and invited him to return to Liberia.

WSJ: For GOP Rep, Earmarks and Business Come Together By Paul Kiel - October 11, 2006, 9:35AM Rep. Charles Taylor (R-NC) has a remarkable talent for steering federal dollars to benefit properties that he owns, The Wall Street Journal reports this morning. As you read about the millions that Taylor has earmarked for himself ($11.4 million to widen a highway that runs through a resort town where his development companies own thousands of acres, $3.8 million for a park that is "directly in front of the Blue Ridge Savings Bank, flagship of his financial empire"), recall Taylor's dogged opposition to federal money going to a 9/11 memorial. As chairman of the House Interior Appropriations subcommittee, Taylor was for years the sole impediment to releasing the $10 million in federal funds needed to buy the land for a memorial in Shanksville, Pa., where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed. A Profile of Charles Taylor President Bush's call for Charles Taylor to step down as Liberia's president is just the latest development in a personal story that includes accused gun-running, war crimes and leading an army of child soldiers. He has also been credited with helping break the long Americo-Liberian political dominance of the country Charles McArthur Ghankay Taylor was elected president of Liberia in July of 1997, garnering over 75 percent of the vote in an election that international observers deemed fair. Taylor's ascent to power, and the election of fellow National Patriotic Party candidates to a majority of legislative seats in the National Assembly, marked what many hoped would be the end of seven years of civil strife. Taylor, one of seven children, was born on January 28, 1948 in Arthington, near Liberia's capital of Monrovia. His father, Nelson, worked as a teacher, sharecropper, lawyer, and judge and was an Americo-Liberian, a group of descendents from Liberia's original nineteenth-century settlers. His mother, Zoe, was a native Gola tribeswoman.

NEW YORK, MARCH 14 – Professor Charles Taylor, a Canadian philosopher who for nearly half a century has argued that problems such as violence and bigotry can only be solved by considering both their secular and spiritual dimensions, has won the 2007 Templeton Prize. The Templeton Prize, valued at 800,000 pounds sterling, more than $1.5 million, was announced today at a news conference at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York by the John Templeton Foundation, which has awarded the prize since 1973. The Templeton Prize is the world's largest annual monetary award given to an individual. Charles Taylor is engaged in contemporary, important, cross-cultural questions such as "What role does spiritual thinking have in the 21 st Century?"  For more than 45 years, Taylor, 75, has argued that wholly depending on secularized viewpoints only leads to fragmented, faulty results. He has described such an approach as crippling, preventing crucial insights that might help a global community increasingly exposed to clashes of culture, morality, nationalities, and religions.
