A humble man who made his living grinding lenses for glasses and telescopes Spinoza was the most influential supporter of Pantheism, the belief that God exists in everything. His theories were encapsulated in the formula "Deus sive natura" (God, otherwise Nature). A Dutch philosopher born of Jewish parents his work Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (1670) infuriated Jewish and Christian scholars to such an extent that his next work, Ethics , was only published after his death.

Biography
Benedict (Baruch) Spinoza Spinoza, however, was an independent thinker, rejecting traditional readings of Scripture, and therefore causing a deviation from Jewish orthodoxy. He disagreed with the tendencies to anthropomorphize God, arguing such notions as illogical and theologically unsound, while further contending that the scriptures do not maintain that angels exist, or that the soul is immortal. Instead he promoted modern historical and critical methods for studying biblical interpretations. Not surprisingly, his outspoken nature had him expelled from the synagogue for heretical thought and practice in 1656, and hence he Latinized his name to Benedict. He took an opportunity to teach at a school for children, on the basis that he could remain an independent thinker from the political situations associated with another career opportunity he repeatedly refused -the appointment of a chair at the University of Heidelberg. Instead, he learned the craft of grinding lenses for glasses and telescopes while teaching at his humble post, to help himself maintain an economic independence as well. Nevertheless, his notoriety as a philosopher attracted many like-minded thinkers, including Gottfried Leibniz. In his late twenties, Spinoza supervised a discussion group on philosophical and theological issues. As his own ideas developed, he decided to go on retreat from Amsterdam to a cottage in Rijnsburg for three years to formulate them in writing. At this time he wrote

Written By : Thomas Cook Peformed By : Charlton Heston Published By : Blackstone Audio Inc Duration : 2 hours Categories : Philosophy Download Price : $9.95 Purchase... A Portuguese Jew living in Holland, Spinoza was excommunicated because of the unorthodox view
he took of God. Spinoza wrote in the rationalist style of a geometric proof to develop his idea of God as the infinite,
indwelling cause of all things, a unified causal system that is virtually synonymous with nature. In this system, there
is no free will, for all things are necessary and inevitable, and all objects, including humans, are part of God's active
self-expression. Our minds can participate in the eternity of God by focusing on natural laws and the way all things
follow from God or nature. Human fulfillment is possible, he believed, only by rejecting our finite, flawed selves and
identifying with the eternal within us. Spinoza believed that by doing so we can love God with an immediate devotion
without asking anything in return.

Baruch Spinoza
Spinoza was born in Amsterdam in 1632, into a family of Jewish emigrants fleeing persecution in Portugal. He was trained in Talmudic scholarship, but his views soon took unconventional directions which the Jewish community - fearing renewed persecution on charges of atheism - tried to discourage. Spinoza was offered 1000 florins to keep quiet about his views, but refused. At the age of 24, he was summoned before a rabbinical court, and solemnly excommunicated. Spinoza refused all rewards and honours, and gave away to his sister his share of his father's inheritance - keeping only a bedstead for himself. He earned his living as a humble lens-grinder. He died [at the Hague] in February 1677 of consumption, probably aggravated by fine glass dust inhaled at his workbench. His philosophy is summarized in the Ethics, a very abstract work, which openly expresses none of the love of nature that might be expected from someone who identified God with nature. And Spinoza's starting point is not nature or the cosmos, but a purely theoretical definition of God. The work then proceeds to prove its conclusions by a method modeled on geometry, through rigorous definitions, axioms, propositions and corollaries. No doubt in this way Spinoza hoped to build his philosophy on the solidest rock, but the method, as well as some of the arguments and definitions, are often unconvincing.

We just had to take Occam's Razor Metaphysics seriously and thus describe reality from only one substance existing, as Leibniz wrote;

Ideas
- There can be only one infinite, dovone substance, comprising all of reality. - Infinite substance must have an infinity of attributes. - God and nature (understood as substance) are identical inasmuch as God is infinite. - Substance is self-caused and depends on nothing other than itself, whether for its existence or for its differentiation into various models. - What we perceive to be a world consisting of numerous and different finite creatures is actually the whole of God or Nature in its attribute of extension. - Since thought and extension are attributes of the one substance, the problem of dualism is overcome. - Philosophy and religion are distinct and separate approaches to the divine, the former dealing with rational truths about God, the latter with obedience and worship. - The problem with religion and theology is that they confuse their approach to God with rational truth and turn from piety to dogmatism and superstition.

Baruch Spinoza : Heretic Extraordinaire
One of the most significant figures in the history of philosophy, Spinoza was excommunicated by the Jewish community.
By Louis Jacobs
Spinoza is an important figure in early modern Jewish history because he used modern critical methods to question Jewish tradition and authority. His rebellion earned him excommunication from the Jewish community; he lived the remainder of his life apart from the Jewish community, but never renounced his Judaism. In this way, he was a sort of proto-secularist. Reprinted with permission from The Jewish Religion: A Companion published by Oxford University Press.
