Apology of Socrates
It was one of the rules which, above all others, made Doctor Franklin the most amiable of men in society, "never to contradict anybody." If he was urged to announce an opinion, he did it rather by asking questions, as if for information, or by suggesting doubts. Thomas Jefferson , letter to Thomas Jefferson Randolph (Jefferson's grandson), November 24, 1808. Unless Plato had already written some short dialogues to illustrate Socrates' technique of questioning (like the Euthyphro ), the Apology of Socrates is the earliest thing by him that we have. This would mean that it is the oldest extant document of Greek philosophy everything earlier (e.g. Parmenides ) was lost and is known only through quoted fragments in later works, like those of Plato himself. There is something fitting in this. Socrates substantially refounded philosophy, and the Apology is still, all by itself, about the best introduction to Western philosophy that there is. At the trial for his life in 399 BC, Socrates astonished his listeners by appearing, despite his vigorous defense, to deliberately get himself found guilty and condemned to death. What he had said was then a matter of some curiosity, but there were no Greek court reporters, and of course no audio or video tape, so there was no official record, or news recording, of the trial. If Socrates' words were going to be remembered, the spectators were going to have to record them. This is what happened, and various versions of the

The Uses and Disadvantages of Socrates
Christopher Rowe (Department of Classics, University of Durham)
Abstract
Socrates was and is one of the most influential figures in the history of Western philosophy. Yet it remains an open question just what the real, historical Socrates stood for: he wrote nothing, and none even of our most ancient sources can probably be relied upon to give us anything like an accurate picture of his ideas and methods. As if to fill the gap, successive individual philosophers and philosophical traditions - from Plato to Nietzsche and beyond - construct a range of different Socrateses, to serve either as a model for emulation or as a target of attack. Nevertheless, the single most vivid picture of Socrates is that provided by Plato, who was his immediate philosophical successor, and who gave the character 'Socrates' the leading role in the majority of his fictional dialogues. What is this Socrates like, and does he have any use for us? natural comic figure, and a character called Socrates appeared regularly in Attic comedy. But the fact that he did so is also a reflection of his fame, or notoriety. In the latter parts of the fifth century and the early fourth century, everyone would evidently have known who he was, and this is quite a striking fact, given the size of Athens (a city with a total population of perhaps more than a quarter of a million), and given also that for the most part he appears resolutely to have taken no part in political life, except insofar as would have been necessary for any Athenian citizen. The explanation of his notoriety probably lies in the combination of his extraordinary appearance and high public visibility: to judge from the stories about him, he was always out and about, in the public spaces of the agora, the streets and the gymnasia, talking to anyone he came across.

The Death of Socrates
Socrates opposed the Sophists, arguing that there are absolute, transcultural standards of right and wrong, good and bad. He argued (as in the first passage below) that once we recognize what is truly good, we will act in accord with that knowledgehence his claim that "the virtues are a kind of knowledge." He also firmly believed (as shown in the second passage) that the cosmos is grounded in goodness, hence that a good person cannot suffer unduly and that death is not something to be feared. Plato recounts the last hours of Socrates' life in a moving dialogue. This is the end of his final speech, just after he had been condemned to death by the citizens of Athens, his home town. The method of execution was that the condemned should drink a cup of hemlock, a not uncommon mode of execution. What reasons does Socrates give for not fearing death? Why is Socrates so little concerned with how his body is to be buried? The Death of Socrates, from Plato's Phaedo When he had spoken these words, he arose and went into a chamber to bathe; Crito followed him and told us to wait. So we remained behind, talking and thinking of the subject of discourse, and also of the greatness of our sorrow; he was like a father of whom we were being bereaved, and we were about to pass the rest of our lives as orphans. When he had taken the bath his children were brought to him (he had two young sons and an elder one); and the women of his family also came, and he talked to them and gave them a few directions in the presence of Crito; then he dismissed them and returned to us.

There will always be critics. Even when things are going pretty well, when the government is relatively stable, when more people than ever are living well, when the future looks promising even at these times, there are those whose need to speak out overcomes their mute acceptance of the status quo. PLATO 'S description of SOCRATES shows the grizzled sage to be one such critic.
Socrates is typically Greek in his relentless questioning of himself, of authorities, of accepted traditions and practices. And Socrates' questioning displays another characteristic associated with the Greeks a belief in the capacity of the mind (rationality) to apprehend the universe and a concomitant belief in the power of language to come to terms with that understanding.
Not all Greek critics chose Socrates' direct approach. ARISTOPHANES play Lysistrata hilariously lambastes war-mongers. Despite its playful ribaldry, Lysistrata was written at a time of great duress, when the welfare of the fragile Athenian city-state was threatened from hostile forces both inside and out. Yet, the play's parody displays its profound critique of contemporary society.

70. Socrates (469-399 B.C.)
A biography of the ancient Greek philosopher socrates.
http://www.usefultrivia.com/biographies/socrates_001.html
SOCRATES S OCRATES The life of Socrates is known to us from the writings of his two disciples, the soldier Xenophon and the philosopher Plato. Of the two, Xenophon is the more accurate. Plato puts his own thoughts into the mouth of Socrates, working them out by his master's method of question and answer. Xenophon's memoir is a simple statement of what he remembers Socrates to have said. BUSH'S DEEP REASONS FOR WAR ON IRAQ: OIL, PETRODOLLARS, AND THE OPEC EURO QUESTION (Updated 5/27/03) As the United States made preparations for war with Iraq, White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer , on 2/6/03, again denied to US journalists that the projected war had "anything to do with oil." He echoed Defense Minister Donald Rumsfeld, who on 11/14/02 told CBS News that "It has nothing to do with oil, literally nothing to do with oil." Speaking to British MPs, Prime Minister Tony Blair was just as explicit: "Let me deal with the conspiracy theory idea that this is somehow to do with oil. There is no way whatever if oil were the issue that it would not be infinitely simpler to cut a deal with Saddam...." ( London Times Nor did Bush's State of the Union Message, or Colin Powell's address to the United Nations Security Council, once mention the word "oil." Instead the talk was (in the president's words) of "Iraq's illegal weapons programs, its attempts to hide those weapons from inspectors, and its links to terrorist groups." However our leaders are not being candid with us. Oil has been a major US concern about Iraq in internal and unpublicized documents, since the start of this Administration, and indeed earlier.
