Socrates
(Louvre, Paris) Socrates (469-399): Athenian sculptor, philosopher, teacher of Plato Xenophon , and Antisthenes Thales Pythagoras Heraclitus ... Parmenides , and Democritus had been trying to explain the diversity of nature. The object of the philosophy of the Athenian Socrates (was altogether different: he was interested in ethics. It was his axiom that no one would knowingly do a bad thing. So knowledge was important, because it resulted in good behavior. This was an important change in the scope of philosophy, and it has become customary to divide the history of the Greek quest for wisdom into a "pre-Socratic" phase, a classical phase (Socrates, Plato Aristotle ), and a hellenistic phase. If we are to believe his student Plato, Socrates was always asking people about what they knew, and invariably they had to admit that they did not really understand what was meant by words like courage, friendship, love etc. Socrates was never without critics. The comic poet Aristophanes ridiculed him in The clouds , and when his pupil Alcibiades had committed high treason, Socrates' position became very difficult. He was forced to drink hemlock after a charge that he had corrupted the youth.

Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who became very influential in the development of Greek philosophy and, thus, Western philosophy in general. The most extensive knowledge we have of him comes from Plato's many dialogues, but there is a little information about him in the historian Xenophon's Memorabilia, Apology and Symposium, and in Aristophanes' The Clouds and The Wasps. Socrates is best known for the dictum that only the examined life is worth living. Important Books by Socrates:

"It is hard to overstate the significance of Kolb's hypertext....
"As an authentic piece of creative philosophical thought and as a remarkably successful use of hypertext technology, this piece should be required reading for hypertext enthusiasts and philosophers alike." "The most exciting piece of non-fiction hypertext that IÁve read....David Kolb shows here his mastery of the philosopherÁs main task: asking questions. " Susana Pajares Tosca, Hipertulia
Socrates in the Labyrinth is a wide-ranging exploration of the relationships between hypertext, thought, and argument. Does hypertext present alternatives to the logical structures of if-then, claim and support? Is hypertext a mere expository tool, that cannot alter the essence of discussion and proof? Or is hypertext essentially unsuited to rigorous argument? Kolb's discussion is a nuanced, creative approach to these and other questions. Kolb points up the history of nonlinearity in philosophical work, from the Socratic dialogues through Hegel, and the variety of forms that philosophical discussion can take. Kolb's discussion and the structures of Socrates itself show that hypertext is not only a "super-encyclopedia" that leaves the essence of argument unchanged. But his keen understanding of both hypertext and postmodernism also shows that the relation between hypertext and "the end of the text" is more complex than is sometimes claimed. Socrates in the Labyrinth embodies several hypertext structures showing possibilities for writing and thought in the new medium.

    SOCRATIC ELENCHUS AS KATHARTIC THERAPY
    Chris Higgins
    Teachers College, Columbia University
Introduction If there is one thing philosophers will agree on, it is that the Platonic dialogues are rich, multi-faceted texts. The dialogues lay out one of the most comprehensive and influential philosophical systems of all time, present a stirring portrait (in the character of Socrates) of a unique philosophic practice, and are at the same time carefully-crafted dramas which richly portray interpersonal and intra-personal encounters and transformations. While most philosophical interpreters make some gesture toward all three dimensions of the texts, they tend to explain this third factor, that is the dramatic quality of the dialogues, as merely a tool for achieving the second aim, and reduce that in turn to a mere illustration of the first. Using the Meno In the end, though, while I hope to establish that the concept of katharsis is capable of generating a compelling account of what might be educational about Socratic cross-examination, the Platonic understanding of this concept will need to be supplemented. While Plato nicely portrays kathartic transformations, his self-understanding of these transformations (as I have garnered it from later dialogues) is insufficiently rich as it stands. It remains tied on the one hand to the medical metaphor of purgation and on the other to the religious metaphor of purification, and furthermore rests on an inadequate conception of the emotions.

IN OUR TIME'S GREATEST PHILOSOPHER VOTE
    MISSED A PROGRAMME?
Go to the Listen Again page GREATEST PHILOSOPHER Socrates (469-399 BC) Listen to Karen Armstrong explain why she chose Socrates 'The unexamined life is not worth living.' The man who popularised the term philosopher, Socrates influenced philosophy so much that all previous thinkers have come to be known as Pre-Socratic. Despite this he declared "All I know is that I know nothing". Socrates was a man of great intellectual brilliance, moral integrity, personal magnetism, and physical self-command. Not one to cloister himself away he would debate with anyone, young or old, rich or poor. In this way he challenged the moral complacency of his fellow citizens, embarrassing them with the contradictions of their lives and the way they used words without really thinking about them. By the age of seventy, Socrates had got under the skin of his fellow Athenians so much that they condemned him to death for impiety and corrupting the youth of the city.

    60. Socrates (ca. 470-399 BC) -- From Eric Weisstein's World Of Scientific Biography

    Socrates (ca. 470-399 BC)

Greek philosopher who studied under Anaxagoras . He pretended a disarming ignorance (Socratic irony), then forced his listeners through shrewd questioning to admit their own ignorance. He used a negative form of arguing in which he argued against statements, but never supported any of his own. This led to a confusion of the subject and a forced admission of ignorance. He was a moral, rather than a natural philosopher. Aristotle
