GLS 6122 LEVEL. CRITICAL THINKING AND DECONSTUCTION IN THE ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES. Course Description The Arts and Humanities attempt to understand and articulate the human condition, our relations to others and the world, and the ways in which we try to give our lives existential meaning. Philosophy shares these interests, and reflects upon the promise and limitations of the different methods, approaches and/or perspectives that may be employed in such intellectual inquiry, and upon the ways of distinguishing true from false claims and beliefs. The course begins by outlining and comparing Modern and Postmodern accounts of the roles of Experience, Reason and Intuition in providing approaches to, and justifications for, our claims to understanding and knowledge. From there it proceeds to give a Structuralist or Holistic account of the origin or genesis of meaning or significance. Noting that ambiguity is often characteristic of meaning, as well as of our perceptions of the world, and of our understanding of human existence, behavior, social interactions, cultural communications and artistic expressions, the course introduces students to some of the basic insights of Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, Structuralism and Poststructuralism regarding the role of theoretical preconceptions, interpretations and contexts in influencing our perception and understanding of the world of supposedly objective facts, social behavior, literary texts and cultural artifacts etc. Exploring the implications of thus subverting or Deconstructiong some of the traditional or absolutist notions of objectivity, truth and reality

PHENOMENOLOGY Myron Orleans Encyclopedia of Sociology Phenomenology is a movement in philosophy that has been adapted by certain sociologists to promote an understanding of the relationship between states of individual consciousness and social life. As an approach within sociology, phenomenology seeks to reveal how human awareness is implicated in the production of social action, social situations and social worlds (Natanson 1970). Phenomenology was initially developed by Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), a German mathematician who felt that the objectivism of science precluded an adequate apprehension of the world (Husserl 1931, 1970). He presented various philosophical conceptualizations and techniques designed to locate the sources or essences of reality in the human consciousness. It was not until Alfred Schutz (1899-1959) came upon some problems in Max Weber's theory of action that phenomenology entered the domain of sociology (Schutz 1967). Schutz distilled from Husserl's rather dense writings a sociologically relevant approach. Schutz set about describing how subjective meanings give rise to an apparently objective social world (Schutz, 1962, 1964, 1966, 1970. 1996; Schutz and Luckmann 1973; Wagner 1983). Schutz's migration to the United States prior to World War II, along with that of other phenomenologically inclined scholars, resulted in the transmission of this approach to American academic circles and to its ultimate transformation into interpretive sociology. Two expressions of this approach have been called

    SECOND DRAFT
February 1997 In writing this paper, I benefited from the comments of Chrysostomos Mantzavinos as well
as of the participants in the conference on Abandoning the Hypothesis of Omniscience in Economics: What Are the Implications?"
January 9-10, 1997 Fribourg Switzerland Published in Kenneth Dennis, ed., Rationality in Economics: Alternative Perspectives Dordrecht : Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1998, pp. 57-80, reprinted in Massimo Egidi and Salvatore Rizzello, eds., Cognitive Economics Cheltenham : Edward Elgar, 2004. Introduction. The mainstream conception of economic action as rational maximizing has been under attack at least since Veblen. What has been lacking, however, is an alternative or at least partly alternative account that remedies many of the faults to which critics point without at the same time obliterating the many tangible benefits of the mainstream approach. This essay argues that a new model of action may be emerging that qualifies as such a (partial) alternative. In what follows, I examine both the strong and weak forms of the rational-behavior model as well as several recent competitors. I then suggest that, taken together and understood in the right way, these competitors constitute a coherent alternative to the mainstream view that nonetheless retains many of that view's most appealing features.

    DISASTER RESPONDER'S PERCEPTION OF TIME
Victoria Koehler -Jones, Sociologist University of Nevada, Las Vegas
INTRODUCTION "Time has no divisions to mark its passage, there is never a thunderstorm or blaze of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols." Thomas Mann Time is a social construction that brings order to our lives. Barbara Adam says: "Time is an ordering principle that coordinates, orients, and regulates interactions between people and groups" (Adam 1990:42). It also interprets and makes available our natural worlds. Whether cesium clocks or crop harvests are used to mete out important periods, time helps us understand, organize and use the world around us. Cultural concepts of time are not immediately perceptible or distinct but when they are examined it becomes apparent that they represent strong normative forces affecting both the behaviors and cognitions of members of the culture. Consider the dominant Western view: future oriented, active and individualistic. We place a premium on the security of long-term planning, but social policy is supposed to provide this for us leaving us free to respond to developing opportunities without worrying or doing too much about the future. Popularly we subscribe to a linear, monotonic progression of time from the past, through the present, into the future but we have little use for the past. Our values are largely near-term while we concentrate on the immediate growth ahead. Our desire to continue economic abundance encourages us to overload the present and near future with planning. Both rapid changerelated to technologyand "freedom" benefit from short-term perspectives.
