Introduction

Lynch seeks to open up epistemology to empirical x to investigation while using x as a methodological tool (see, for instance, Bloor, 1976). The way methods are selected and used, therefore, requires a greater sensitivity to issues in the philosophy of science than most sociological investigations are called on to demonstrate. counts need xviii

Such a view, Lynch goes on to point out, contrasts enormously with the actual practices of scientists working in real-world organisations and laboratories. The problem this produces (for sociologists) is fundamentally one of reconciliation from their own point of view ; the latter, on the other hand, requires a principled orientation to the ideals of scientific rationality as outlined above. post hoc must have some kind of relationship to how scientists conduct themselves at work in real life, as Schutz himself acknowledges, but again what

He worked on phenomenology social science methodology and the philosophy of Edmund Husserl William James and others. Sch¼tz's principal task was to develop the phenomenological philosophy of Edmund Husserl as a basis for a philosophy of the social sciences, particularly the theories of Max Weber . After his emigration from Austria to the USA before the Second World War, he combined this approach with theories from leading American sociologists, such as George Herbert Mead . Although Sch¼tz was never a student of Husserl, he, together with a colleague, Felix Kaufmann , studied Husserl's work intensively in seeking a basis for a "sociology of understanding" derived from the work of Max Weber . This work and its continuation resulted in his first book

Notable Books in Phenomenology Notable Books in Phenomenology Since 15 March, 2004 this page has been visited times! This counter is just for visits to Notable Books. This listing was composed in several steps and draws on the expert judgment of phenomenologists across the planet. First a list of about 120 book titles was selected from the Encyclopedia of Phenomenology (Kluwer, 1997) and sent to the contact persons of almost 120 phenomenological organizations identified thus far with a request to relay it to other members of their organizations and it was requested that other first-class books be recommended. This process was repeated twice. Everything recommended has been accepted. Excessive inclusion seemed preferable to excessive exclusion. There are now 415 titles and they come from every region of the earth. Our tradition is, after all, planetary. If one wished to draw on this listing in encouraging the enhancement of one s library collection, nobody would discourage it!

Abstract Explores the phenomenological sociology of Alfred Schutz, with particular reference to his concern to understand the social distribution of knowledge in society. The methodological principles of phenomenology are discussed, with particular reference to 'ideal types'. Schutz's identification of the stratification of knowledge with three key ideal types is elaborated and the implications for information behaviour research are discussed. The relationship between methodology and method is discussed, and a novel typology of social research methods is offered.
INTRODUCTION: PHENOMENOLOGY
Phenomenology, per se, is a branch of philosophy, owing its origin to the work of Husserl and later writers [e.g., Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, who took the ideas into existentialism]. The aim of phenomenology, as propounded by Husserl, is to study human phenomena without considering questions of their causes, their objective reality, or even their appearances. The aim is to study how human phenomena are experienced in consciousness, in cognitive and perceptual acts, as well as how they may be valued or appreciated aesthetically. Phenomenology seeks to understand how persons construct meaning and a key concept is intersubjectivity. Our experience of the world, upon which our thoughts about the world are based, is intersubjective because we experience the world with and through others. Whatever meaning we create has its roots in human actions, and the totality of social artefacts and cultural objects is grounded in human activity.

What is Alertness? Roger Koppl Fairleigh Dickinson University Madison, NJ 07940 http://alpha.fdu.edu/~koppl koppl@fdu.edu November 2001
Introduction
Israel Kirzner’s most celebrated contribution to economics is his theory of entrepreneurship. It is a fundamental contribution to the core of our discipline. In spite of its importance, however, it remains a somewhat elusive concept. Like Kirzner’s own mind, his concept of entrepreneurship is subtle and profound. Because the essential point is subtle, it may easily be mistaken for a detail or a nuance. But his “nuance” makes all the difference. Kirzner’s theory of entrepreneurship gives us a theory of equilibration, rather than of equilibrium. It carries us away from the world of static equilibrium to a dynamic theory of rivalrous competition. I believe that we can enrich our understanding of Kirzner’s concept of entrepreneurial alertness by recasting it in the language of phenomenological psychology. The great pioneer of phenomenological psychology was Edmund Husserl. My source, however, will be his follower, Alfred Schutz.

MEDICAL METAPHORS IN PEACE RESEARCH:
JOHN BURTON'S CONFLICT RESOLUTION THEORY
AND A SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONIST ALTERNATIVE
Introduction "A man ahead of his time" is one of the many tributes given to John Burton.1 His influence on the Anglo-American conflict analysis tradition is comparable with Johan Galtung's influence on the Scandinavian peace research. Burton is one of the pioneering scholars and practitioners of so called "problem-solving workshop conflict resolution." Furthermore, his theory of the relationship between basic human needs and the development of protracted conflict has brought in a set of new issues and evoked a lively theoretical debate among conflict analysts and peace researchers (Burton, 1990a). Even for scholars who do not share Burton's enthusiasm for the idea of universal human needs, his theories, and critiques, of them have provided fruitful starting-points for the development of new approaches to conflict (Avruch et al., 1991; Avruch & Black, 1991; Merry, 1987). Burton's contribution to International Relations and international conflict analysis is not limited to his version of human needs theory. For example, a variant of 'world society' approaches owes much to the thought and influence of Burton. In Burton's innovative world society model, the emphasis is put on transactions to the extent that the basic unit of analysis is considered to be a set of patterned interactions (1987a). Similarly, the topic of altering world environment and the need of governments for adapting policies to changing circumstances have been discussed by him (1962; 1965). Burton's conflict theory, on the other hand, can be called integrative, because it aims at giving a general explanation of conflict by combining all levels from individual to international.

Austrian-American sociologist and social philosopher, influenced by Max Weber 's sociology and Edmund Husserl 's phenomenology, and famous (i.a.) for his conception of the social as the lived everyday experience of individuals. Schutz spent the Second World War in New York along with Roman Jakobson and others) and later remained there, becoming professor at the New School of Social Research in 1952. In the United States, Schutz was influenced by American pragmatism and logical empiricism , which mingled with the heritage from Husserl and Weber, and with a deep interest in the arts that was also stimulated in the United States, to produce a characteristic "flavor" of sociology that has deeply influenced American social science, e.g. through Talcott Parsons (who collaborated with Schutz), Peter Berger and Clifford Geertz An extensive article on Schutz is to be found in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

He published Phenomenology of the Social World in 1932 which combined Weber's sociology with Husserl's phenomenological method. Schutz went to Freiburg, briefly, to work with Husserl. He left Vienna in 1939 for the US where he was first lecturer and then professor at the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the New School, New York. Arendt, Hannah (1906-1975)
Hannah Arendt was born on October 14, 1906, in Hanover, in Wilhelmine Germany. After graduating from high school in Koenigsberg in 1924, Arendt began to study theology that fall at the University of Marburg. where she met the young philosopher Martin Heidegger. Her brief but passionate affair with Heidegger, began in 1925 but ended when she went on to study at the University of Heidelberg with Karl Jaspers. Because of the Nazi persecution in late nineteen thirties, she fled first to France, and then to the United States, where she obtained her citizenship and spent her rest of her life. Arendt is a well-known German-American philosopher and political theorist. Some of her best known books are The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951,The Human Condition (1958), Between Past and Future (1961), and On Revolution (1968). Her books could be characterized by a yearning to reconstruct political philosophy rather than to explore the devolution of political history.
