Executive summary: Naturphilosophie Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Memorabilien De Marcione Paullinarum epislolarum emendatore . Meanwhile a much more important influence had begun to operate on him arising out of his study of Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte . The Review of Aenesidemus and the tractate On the Notion of Wissenschaftslehre found in his mind most fruitful soil. With characteristic zeal and impetuosity Schelling had no sooner grasped the leading ideas of Fichte's amended form of the critical philosophy than he put together his impressions of it in his (1794). There was nothing original in the treatment, but it showed such power of appreciating the new ideas of the Fichtean method that it was hailed with cordial recognition by Fichte himself, and gave the author immediately a place in popular estimation as in the foremost rank of existing philosophical writers. The more elaborate work, (1795), which, still remaining within the limits of the Fichtean idealism, however, exhibits unmistakable traces of a tendency to give the Fichtean method a more objective application, and to amalgamate with it

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von, SHEHL ihng, FREE drihkh VIHL hehlm YOTT zehb fuhn (1775-1854), was a German philosopher. His earlier works are generally understood as an important link between Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte on the one hand, and G. W. F. Hegel on the other. These early works represent German idealism and romanticism. Schelling's System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) was the major work of his youth. However, he later criticized his own early works and Hegel's philosophy as "negative philosophy." Schelling attempted to develop a "positive philosophy" that stressed revelation and influenced existentialism.

Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von u key Fichte Ideas for a Philosophy of Nature (1797, tr. 1988) he had already differed somewhat in holding that nature cannot be subordinated to mental life. The difference between the forces of nature and mind must be only a matter of degree or level, and the problem of knowledge is absorbed in the ultimate unity of mind and matter in the Absolute. In his later period, Schelling maintained that history is a series of stages progressing toward harmony from a previous fall and that differences are aspects of this development. He argued that God also partakes of this process of development; that deity, to have personality, must hold within itself the limiting factors that define personality. Schelling's essay

Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph
Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph , German philosopher, born in W¼rtemberg ; studied at T¼bingen , where he became acquainted with Hegel; wrote first on theological subjects and then on philosophical; went to Jena and became a disciple and follower of Fichte; gradually abandoned Fichte's position and began to develop ideas of his own, and in conjunction with Hegel edited the Critical Journal of Philosophy ; held afterwards a professorship at M¼nich and a lectureship at Berlin ; his philosophy is no finished or completed system, but is essentially a history of the progressive stages through which he himself passed; during the reign of Hegel he kept silence, and only broke it when Hegel was dead; thought to outstrip him by another philosophy , but the attempt has proved fruitless of any important results (1775-1854). Naturphilosophie , which, although its empirical claims are largely indefensible, opens up the possibility of a modern hermeneutic view of nature that does not restrict nature's significance to what can be established about it in scientific terms. The second is his anti-Cartesian account of subjectivity, which prefigures some of the best ideas of thinkers like Nietzsche and Jacques Lacan, in showing how the thinking subject cannot be fully transparent to itself. The third is his later critique of Hegelian Idealism, which influenced Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and others, and aspects of which are still echoed in contemporary thought by thinkers like Jacques Derrida.

The significance of the work of the early Schelling (1795-1800) lies in its attempts to give a new account of nature which, while taking account of the fact that Kant has irrevocably changed the status of nature in modern philosophy, avoids some of the problematic consequences of Kant's theory. For the Kant of the
