Goethe Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling January 27 August 20 ), later von Schelling , was a German philosopher . Standard histories of philosophy make him the midpoint in the development of German Idealism , situating him between Fichte , his mentor prior to , and Hegel , his former university roommate and erstwhile friend. Interpreting Schelling's philosophy is often difficult because of its ever-changing nature. Some scholars characterize him as a protean thinker who, although brilliant, jumped from one subject to another and lacked the synthesizing power needed to arrive at a complete philosophical system. Others challenge the notion that Schelling's thought is marked by profound breaks, instead arguing that his philosophy always focused on a few common themes, especially human freedom, the absolute, and the relationship between spirit and nature.

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling
died Aug. 20, 1854, Bad Ragaz, Switz. German philosopher and educator. Inspired by Immanuel Kant , in his System of Transcendental Idealism (1800) he attempted to unite his concept of nature with the philosophy of Johann Gottlieb Fichte . He held that art mediates between the natural and physical spheres when the natural (or unconscious) and spiritual (or conscious) productions are united in artistic creation. His view that the Absolute expresses itself in all beings as the unity of the subjective and the objective was criticized by G.W.F. Hegel . In Of Human Freedom (1809), he declared that mankind's freedom is real only if it is freedom for both good and evil, a position that forms the basis of his later philosophy. A major figure of post-Kantian idealism , Schelling had an important influence on Romanticism. FRIEDRICH WILHELM JOSEPH VON SCHELLING (1775-1854), German philosopher, was born on the 27th of January 1775 at Leonberg, a small town of W¼rttemberg . He was. educated at the cloister school of Bebenhausen, near Tubingen, where his father, an able Orientalist, was chaplain and professor, and at the theological seminary at T¼bingen, which he was specially allowed to enter when he was three years under the prescribed age. Among his (elder) contemporaries were Hegel and H¶lderlin. In 1792 he graduated in the philosophical faculty. In 1793 he contributed to Paulus's Memorabilien a paper "œber Mythus, historische Sagen, and Philosopheme der altesten Welt"; and in 1795 his thesis for his theological degree was DeMarcione Paullinarum epistolarum emendatore. Meanwhile a much more important influence had begun to operate on him, arising out of his study of Kant and Fichte. The Review of Aenesidemus and the tractate On the Notion of Wissenschaftslehre found in his mind most fruitful soil. With characteristic zeal and impetuosity Schelling had no sooner grasped the leading ideas of Fichte's amended form of the critical

Ideas Concerning a Philosophy of Nature (1797)
On the World-Soul (1798) Biography: Friedrich Schelling was a German idealist who is responsible for the creation of Naturphilosophie, or "philosophy of nature." Schelling's purpose was to try and find some way to approach nature in a manner more holistically than was done either by contemporary philosophers or by the growing material science as exemplified by the work fo Isaac Newton. The basic principle behind Naturphilosophie is that of unity: all of nature and, therefore, all of reality is derived from some Urkraft, or "original force." The differences we perceive between things like light, heat, and electricity are not "real" in the sense that those differences are accidents rather than because they are all fundamentally different "things." This principal became very influential with quite a few scientists at the time and was helpful in encouraging them to develop more fundamental natural laws which described more and more phenomena in nature.

The second is his anti-Cartesian account of subjectivity, which prefigures some of the best ideas of thinkers like Nietzsche and Jacques Lacan, in showing how the thinking subject cannot be fully transparent to itself. The third is his later critique of Hegelian Idealism, which influenced Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and others, and aspects of which are still echoed in contemporary thought by thinkers like Jacques Derrida.

The significance of the work of the early Schelling (1795-1800) lies in its attempts to give a new account of nature which, while taking account of the fact that Kant has irrevocably changed the status of nature in modern philosophy, avoids some of the problematic consequences of Kant's theory. Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Von Schelling (1775-1854)
"All existence must be conditioned in order that it may be actual, that is, personal, existence. God's existence, too, could not be personal if it were not conditioned, except that he had the conditioning factor within himself and not outside himself....Man never gains control over the condition even though in evil he strives to do so; it is only loaned to him independent of him; hence his personality and selfhood can never be raised to complete actuality. This is the sadness which adheres to all finite life....Activated selfhood is necessary for life's intensity; without there would be complete death, goodness slumbering; for where there is no battle there is no life. The will of the depths is therefore only the awakening of life, not evil immediately and for itself....Whoever has no material or force for evil in himself is also impotent for good.....The time of merely historical faith is past, as soon as the possibility of immediate knowledge is given."

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, 1775 - 1854
Friedrich Schelling, a German idealist philosopher once known as the "poet of the transcendental movement," has been held to be the most influential of the post-Kantian thinkers. His works, however, were (and still are) little-translated into English, and consequently his thought was known to the New England Transcendentalists mainly through the writings of Victor Cousin , and Samuel Taylor Coleridge . One Transcendentalist, Charles Stearns Wheeler , did hear Schelling in person when he presented his famous lectures on the philosophy of revelationattempting to harmonize faith and sciencein Berlin in 1842. Schelling has been written about as follows by Octavius Brooks Frothingham , the first historian of American Transcendentalism Schelling was Fichte's disciple, filled his vacant chair in Jena in 1798, and took his philosophical departure from certain of his positions. Fichte had shut the man up close in himself, had limited the conception of the world by the boundaries of consciousness, had reduced the inner universe to a full-orbed creation, made its facts substantial and its fancies solid, peopled it with living forces, and found room in it for the exercise of a complete moral and spiritual life. In his system the soul was creator. The outer universe had its being in human thought. Subject and object were one, and that one was the subject. Schelling restored the external world to its place as an objective reality, no fiction, no projection from the human mind. Subject and object, in his view, were one, but in the
