Rousseau, Jean-Jacques
Rousseau's mother died a few days after he was born (in Switzerland) and he was then raised by an aunt and uncle. Another version of his life says his father raised him until he was 10, and then gave him to the custody of his aunt and uncle, who sent him to boarding school. Another version states that he and a cousin lived with an unrelated family from 1722 and only briefly, later, lived with his aunt and uncle. He ran away from his apprenticeship to an engraver after three years and became secretary and companion to a wealthy and sympathetic woman. in Texas Want to adopt? Pregnant? ... click here In 1742 he went to Paris and became a music teacher, copyist and secretary, and a friend of Diderot, who commissioned him to write the music articles for the famous Encyclopédie. He first became known as a philosopher in the 1750s, and his influence on modern political and educational philosophy has been profound. His views antagonized the authorities in both France and Switzerland and in 1762 he went into exile in Prussia and then England, returning to France under an assumed name in 1768. His most influential works are probably the philosophical novel Émile (1762) and his autobiographical Confessions (1782).

    INTRODUCTION
    Rousseau was a French philosopher and political theorist who is recognized as one of the greatest thinkers of the French Enlightenment. A prolific writer on many subjects, he has been variously cited as the intellectual father of the French Revolution, founder of the Romantic movement in literature, and engenderer of many modern pedagogical movements. The broad influence of his thought originates not only from his best-known political and philosophical treatises— Du contrat social; ou principes du droit politique (The Social Contract;

    The Collected Writings of Rousseau Choice More than two hundred years after the death of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many of the works of the French philosopher and political theorist have been either unavailable in English or poorly translated. The Collected Writings of Rousseau Confessions and Julie , have been newly translated for the series. an innovation of great convenience to scholars who wish to consult a passage in the original. The Collected Writings of Rousseau was launched in 1990 with the publication of the first English translation of Rousseau, Judge of Jean-Jacques, also known as Dialogues. Confessions and the Social Contract , along with related manuscripts. One of the most significant volumes in the series is an entirely new translation of the Confessions by Christopher Kelly. Many scholars have long felt that previous translations of this key text have been inadequate and inaccurate; this new version is the most faithful to the original available in English.

    ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques (1712-78). The famous French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau gave better advice and followed it less than perhaps any other great man. Although he wrote glowingly about nature, he spent much time in crowded Paris. He praised married life and wrote wisely about the education of children, but he lived with his servant, marrying her only after 23 years, and gave up their babies. He taught hygiene, yet he lived in a stuffy garret. He preached virtue, but he was far from virtuous. Rousseau himself was unable to guide his behavior to follow his beliefs. Yet his writings on politics, literature, and education have had a profound influence on modern thought. Of French Huguenot descent, Rousseau was born in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 28, 1712. His father was a watchmaker. Young Rousseau grew up undisciplined, and at about the age of 16 he became a vagabond. In Chambery, France, he met and lived with Madame de Warens, a woman who was to influence his intellectual evolution. For a while he roamed through Switzerland, Italy, and France, earning his way as secretary, tutor, and music teacher. When he went to Paris in 1741, he was impressed by the fact that society was artificial and unfair in its organization. The society that Rousseau viewed lived by rules made by the aristocracy and had little interest in the welfare of the common man. This unknown wanderer upset that whole elaborate society. After years of thought Rousseau wrote a book on the origins of government, 'The Social Contract', stating that no laws are binding unless agreed upon by the people. This idea deeply affected French thinking, and it became one of the chief forces that brought on the French Revolution about 30 years later.

    In 1750 Rousseau won the Academy of Dijon award for his Discours sur les sciences et les arts (Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts, 1750), and in 1752 his opera Le devin du village (The Village Sage) was first performed. In his prize-winning discourse and in his Discourse on the Origin of Inequality Among Mankind (1755; trans. 1761), he expounded the view that science, art, and social institutions have corrupted humankind and that the natural, or primitive, state is morally superior to the civilized state. The persuasive rhetoric of these writings provoked derisive comments from the French philosopher

Contact Us Philosopher of the Month June 2003 - Jean Jacques Rousseau Terri Collier One of the most enigmatic thinkers of the 18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's colourful life and consistent defiance of social conventions are reflected in his political writings. He was born in Geneva in 1712. His mother died in childbirth and his father, a watchmaker, left his son to the care of relatives when he was exiled from the city for brawling in 1722. As a young man Rousseau was forced to take several menial positions, but through self-education and the patronage of wealthy women he established himself as a talented musician and intellectual. In Paris in 1645 Rousseau first made the acquaintance of Diderot and the Paris encyclopedistes . Thus began his uneasy relationship with enlightenment thought. In 1750 Rousseau wrote his Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts for a competition at the academy of Dijon in which he established the themes which he was to develop in much of his subsequent political philosophy. The competition had asked for an essay on the impact of the arts and sciences on human morals. Rousseau argued that these were merely the seductive characteristics of a modern society in which mankind had lost his natural liberty and entered a moral decline. Rousseau equated virtue with innocence which once lost could never be regained.

    Rousseau was born on June 28, 1712, in Geneva, Switzerland. By the age of sixteen, he had left home. In Savoy he met Baronne Louise De Warens, a wealthy woman who took Rousseau into her home and transformed him into a philosopher through a rigorous course of study. Rousseau also studied music during his time with De Warens. In 1742 he moved to Paris, where he became associated with Denis Diderot, a philosopher who was editor of the French , a monumental work of scholarship about the arts and society. Diderot commissioned Rousseau to write articles about music for the work. In 1750 Rousseau won a prize for his essay Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts. The Village Sage. Despite the accolades, Rousseau abandoned his musical career, believing it was morally unworthy to work in the theater. Instead he pursued his investigation of society, writing Discourse on the Origin of Inequality among Mankind in 1752. He enlarged on his first work, criticizing civilization for its corrupting influence and praising the natural, or primitive, state as morally superior to the civilized state.

    French social philosopher and writer. His book (1762), emphasizing the rights of the people over those of the government, was a significant influence on the French Revolution. In the novel Emile (1762), he outlined a new theory of education. Rousseau was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Discourses on the Origins of Inequality Social Contract he argued that government is justified only if sovereignty stays with the people. He thereby rejected representative democracy in favour of direct democracy, modelled on the Greek polis and the Swiss canton, and stated that a government could be legitimately overthrown if it failed to express the general will of the people. Emile was written as an example of how to elicit the unspoiled nature and abilities of children, based on natural development and the power of example.
