On Richard Rorty July 3, 2007
Richard Rorty, who died in June, was a private public intellectual. He did not weigh in as often as possible on as many issues as possible. He had a minimalist homepage. If his self-deprecation was an act, it was a very convincing one. His response to the appalling record of the George W. Bush presidency was to be shocked into honorable silence. He had no wars to urge America into or to resonantly recant his earlier support for. It was only in the Clinton years that he found his distinctive public voice: the affable, ironic bluntness of somebody talking at his kitchen table. He could denounce with such verve in those years because he could also be hopeful. meant getting real. But among the philosophers this was clearly a minority position.

A Talent for Bricolage
An Interview with Richard Rorty Conducted in January, 1995
Interviewer: Joshua Knobe
First published in The Dualist, 2 , 1995, pp. 56-71 Early Life
Interviewer: Let's begin with your childhood. Were you a Trotskyite yourself, or was it just something your parents imposed on you?
Rorty: I was just brought up a Trotskyite, the way people are brought up Methodists or Jews or something like that. It was just the faith of the household.
Int: Was it the same with Dewey?
Rorty: Not really. I mean, Dewey didn't loom as large. My parents weren't particularly interested in philosophy, and I don't think they'd read much Dewey.
Int: And Sidney Hook?
Rorty: My father and Sidney Hook had left the Communist Party at the same time. And that served as a bond between them. He was a family friend whom I went to see when I decided to go into philosophy. I saw Sidney when I was seventeen or eighteen. He told me: "So, you want to be a philosopher. Publish early and often." You know, a few tips of that general sort and then I saw him over the years and he knew that I disagreed with him about the Vietnam War. That caused a certain edginess. But toward the end of his life, the edginess had disappeared, and we were on reasonably good terms.
Int: Were you isolated by your political beliefs?

Richard Rorty, 1931-2007
Here I was about to write on Dante, and I hear that Rorty has passed away. Rorty is such a paradoxical and multifaceted figure that his death gives me cause to ponder my own philosophical orientations and biases. Even more than other analytic "slipstream" figures (my appropriated, tongue-in-cheek term for those analytics who headed, intentionally or unintentionally, towards an epistemological and hermeneutic rapprochement with continental developments: late Wittgenstein, Quine, Sellars, Goodman, Putnam, Davidson, McDowell, and Brandom, all of whom owe some kind of debt to the American pragmatists, particularly Peirce), Rorty let himself abandon the analytic style and rigor and embrace far more historicist positions. And I feel this pull myself. But complicating this is the seeming existence of three Rortys. In roughly chronological order:
  • the analytic "linguistic turn" Rorty ( Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature , etc.)
  • the pragmatic deconstructionist Rorty ( Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity , etc.)

The ABC cannot guarantee its complete accuracy because of the possibility of mishearing and occasional difficulty in identifying speakers. Alan Saunders: Hello, and welcome to the The Philosopher's Zone . I'm Alan Saunders. Richard Rorty: It seems to me it's useful to think of truth as what you get as a result of free inquiry. Milton said that truth never loses in a free and open encounter, and I think that's the motto of democratic societies, that if we look after political freedom, truth can take care of itself. Alan Saunders: The voice of the American philosopher, Richard Rorty who died on Friday, June 8th at the age of 75. He was, depending on your point of view, one of the most important philosophers of the last half century, or a shifty relativist who dragged the rug from under his own feet by denying objective truth. Well, to learn more about Rorty and his legacy, I spoke to Paul Redding, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. And we began by looking at where Rorty came from, intellectually speaking. He was educated at the University of Chicago and at Yale, in what's known as analytical philosophy. In other words, the standard mixture in the English-speaking world: logic, science, the pursuit of objectivity. Paul Redding.

Fellow Traveling with Richard Rorty Paul Grobstein
2 July 2007 (comments welcome, go to end I first encountered Richard Rorty's work rather late in both our lives. Having done so, I regret never having met him and, with his death on 8 June 2007, the loss of the chance ever to do so. Perhaps though its all for the best. Following a quite different path, I found myself in interesting places that Rorty too had reached. That different people can get to a place in different ways, and in the absence of any direct connection with one another, provides reassurance that there is some kind of a meaningful there there. And a reason to share stories both about how one got there and where one might explore next.
I'm very fond of Rorty's 1992 essay, "Trotsky and the Wild Orchids", and think its a good place to start ...

    Richard Rorty
Pragmatic philosopher who influenced postmodernism by arguing that we should abandon the search for objective truth
When academic philosophers achieve wider public renown it is, more often than not, because their work generates a certain amount of outraged controversy. Richard Rorty was no exception here, though this was one of the few ways in which he bowed to convention.

"...it is reflection on how a language-using organism interacts with what is going on its [sic] neighborhood. Like Dewey, Davidson takes off from Darwin rather than from Descartes: from beliefs as adaptations to the environment rather than as quasi-picutures....[Davidson] thinks of beliefs as habits of acting rather than as parts of a 'model' of the world constructed by the organism to help it deal with the world." REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Rorty, Richard Rorty, Richard (1931-...), is a leading American philosopher who questioned the widespread belief that philosophy can or should provide answers to fundamental questions. Rorty also examined the role of the mind in epistemology (the theory of knowledge). He came to believe that philosophy can be seen as a "literary genre." This belief led him to move from a professorship of philosophy to one in literature, and then later, to one in humanities. Rorty's best-known work is probably Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (1979), a controversial attack on traditional philosophy. Contingency, Irony and Solidarity (1989) reflects Rorty's interest in literary criticism, social theory, and intellectual history. His other important publications include The Linguistic Turn (1967), Consequences of Pragmatism (1982), Essays on Heidegger and Others (1991), and Objectivity, Relativism and Truth (1991).

He was 75. The cause was complications from pancreatic cancer, said his wife, Mary Varney Rorty. Russell Berman, the chairman of the department of comparative literature at Stanford University, who worked with Rorty for more than a decade, said, "He rescued philosophy from its analytic constraints" and returned it "to core concerns of how we as a people, a country and humanity live in a political community."
