    Published: MONDAY, MAY 23, 2005 PARIS: Paul Ricoeur, 92, a French philosopher whose broad interests included biblical interpretation and the study of human perception, died in his sleep last Thursday night. Ricoeur was born in 1913 in the southeastern town of Valence. He had a long career teaching in universities in the United States, Belgium and France. Last

Ricoeur was orphaned at an early age, but he was able to go to school and earned a doctorate. He was teaching high school in western France when World War II broke out, and he spent most of the war in a German prison camp. After the war, he held various teaching positions, including posts at the Sorbonne and the University of Chicago. He also worked for the National Center for Scientific Research, and was active in the Socialist Party.
