Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) Paul Ricoeur was among the most impressive philosophers of the 20th century, both in the unusual breadth and depth of his philosophical scholarship and in the innovative nature of his thought. He was a prolific writer, and his work is essentially concerned with that grand theme of philosophy: the meaning of life. Ricoeur's "tensive" style focuses on the tensions running through the very structure of human being. His constant preoccupation was with a hermeneutic of the self, fundamental to which is the need we have for our lives to be made intelligible to us. Ricoeur's flagship in this endeavor is his narrative theory. Though a Christian philosopher whose work in theology is well-known and respected, his philosophical writings do not rely upon theological concepts, and are appreciated by non-Christians and Christians alike. His most widely read works are The Rule of Metaphor, From Text to Action , and Oneself As Another , and the three volumes of Time and Narrative . His other significant books include Hermeneutics and the Human Sciences, Conflict of Interpretations, The Symbolism of Evil, Freud and Philosophy

Paul Ricoeur and the Hermeneutics of Suspicion: A Brief Overview and Critique
Essay by by G. D. Robinson. Excerpt: Hermeneutics is both science and art. In many ways this beguilingly simple statement is responsible for the modern ferment in hermeneutics - a process begun with F. Schleiermacher (1768-1834) and his attempt to gain meaning through understanding the mind of the author; given significant impetus more recently in the seminal work of Hans-Georg Gadamer and his call for a dialectic between the horizons of the text and reader; and radicalized in the increasingly reader-response oriented hermeneutics of today.

Ricoeur's Hermeneutical Alternative to Rational Religion
Ricoeur employs this linaguistic/symbolic epistemology in his book The Symbolism of Evil . In this work, R examines the language of fault and accusation and concludes that the Cartesian ideal of a free and indubitable starting point for knowledge is an impossibility: "it is necessary to renounce the chimera of a philosophy without presuppositions and begin from a full language" (1967: 19). Because it cannot hld every assumption in abeyance, skeptical thought must start "from speech that has already taken place, and in which everything has already been said in unconscious resources encoded in the history of language and human experience; for this reason, the moral past is alive in present speech. Ricoeur writes of "the gift of meaning from the symbol." In his words, "the symbol gives; but what it gives is occasion of thought, something to think about" (1967:348). For the philosophical hermeneutics of R, knowledge is a gift before it becomes a task; it must be received before it can be doubted.
Ricoeur's Theory of Symbol
After critiquing Enlightenment skepticism, Ricoeur stresses the need for a reaffirmation of commitment and the will after an experience of doubt and denial. He laments and then proclaims "in every way, something has been lost, irremediably lost: immediacy of belief. But if we can no longer live the great symbolisms of the sacred in accordance with the original belief in them, we can, we modern men, aim at a second naivete in and through criticism. In short it is by interpreting that we hear again" (1967: 351). Thus, interpretation is the way that the modern person is able to reaffirm life through an honest act of willing and reflecting on symbols. Symbolic, communal interpretation, instead of detached rational thought, is the way that one assesses reality.

Why do major historical events such as the Holocaust occupy the forefront of the collective consciousness, while profound moments such as the Armenian genocide, the McCarthy era, and France's role in North Africa stand distantly behind? Is it possible that history "overly remembers" some events at the expense of others? A landmark work in philosophy, Paul Ricoeur's Memory, History, Forgetting examines this reciprocal relationship between remembering and forgetting, showing how it affects both the perception of historical experience and the production of historical narrative.
