Thomas Reid
First published Mon Aug 28, 2000; substantive revision Mon Jan 27, 2003 After studying at the University of Aberdeen, Reid entered the ministry in New Machar in 1737. In 1748 he published a short essay entitled "An Essay on Quantity" which concerned Hutchison's Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue . Although this was his only published work, he was given a professorship at King's College Aberdeen in 1752. There he wrote An Inquiry Into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (published in 1764). Shortly afterward he was given a much more prestigious professorship at the University of Glasgow. He resigned from this position in 1781 in order to give himself greater time to write, and published Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man in 1785 and Essays on the Active Powers of Man in 1788. In the Inquiry , which is primarily a work in epistemology, Reid examines each of the five senses and discusses the ways in which we achieve knowledge of the world through employing them. Much of the view developed in the

Biography:
Thomas Reid is known as a founder of the common-sense school of philosophy, perhaps better known as the Scottish school or even the Scottish School of Common Sense, a perspective that exercised considerable influence both in Great Britain and in America during the 19th century According to Reid, common sense should be the foundation of all philosophical inquiry. Common sense should, in turn, be understood as self-evident knowledge we are able to acquire through the direct experience of objects in the physical world (real object, not copies or illusions). This was the epistemological idea of direct realism or common sense realism. Reid disagreed strongly with more idealistic epistemological theories advocated by philosophers like John Locke, Descartes, and other Early Modern philosophers.

May 2007 Sadly, the day job at KingsIsle Entertainment didn't work out quite the way I'd hoped, so I'm back to freelancing full time. I won't go into the details here, but suffice it to say that creatively, I wasn't happy with my responsibilities there. Still, ours was an amicable parting, and I gained invaluable experience in the computer game industry. The good news is I have renewed energy to direct toward my writing. Sometimes you forget how "comfortable" a role is to play until you stop doing it. I'm hoping to devote some of my efforts toward more speculative writing. I'll keep everyone posted on how this progresses. Please note that I have a new email address: TMR [at] thomasmreid [dot] com In The Works Even though the gig at KingsIsle didn't pan out, that doesn't mean I'm abandoning my efforts to expand into the CG industry completely. I had lunch last week with the writers from another local game company, one of whom has been a friend of mine since our college days. They are interested in contracting me to do some creative writing for their new MMORPG. Based on the conversation, this work sounds like it's much more up my alley. Nothing is set in stone yet, however. I'll post more news as it comes. I am also exploring the possibilities of working on campus in some capacity. I have been considering looking for a teaching gig in creative writing. I also want to offer my services as an editor to students who seek help polishing their term papers, theses, and dissertations. I may be expanding the site to include advertising for this service in the near future.

REID, THOMAS MAYNE (1818-1883). Thomas Mayne Reid, novelist and adventurer, was born on April 4, 1818, in Ballyroney, County Down, Ireland, the son of Rev. Thomas Mayne Reid, senior clerk of the Irish General Assembly. Intended for the Presbyterian ministry, Reid entered the Royal Academical Institution in Belfast in September 1834 but, being of a rebellious disposition, left the school in 1838 without completing his course of instruction. After briefly running a school in Ballyroney, he sailed for New Orleans in December 1839 aboard the Dumfriesshire . In New York he was employed as a corn factor but left his job after six months, supposedly because he refused to whip slaves. He then sojourned in Nashville, where he served as tutor to the children of Gen. Peyton Robertson and ran, for seven months, the New English, Mathematical, and Classical School. In either Natchez, Mississippi, or Natchitoches, Louisiana, he worked as a clerk for a provision dealer and sometime in 1841 met Commodore Edwin W. Moore, qv to whom he later dedicated his novel Scalp Hunters (1851). In 1843 Reid was in St. Louis, from where, according to contradictory sources, he either started up the Missouri River in the company of John James Audubon

He attended Kincardine parish school and Aberdeen Grammar School, and in 1722 entered Marischal College, Aberdeen, where he followed the four-year general arts course before going on to study divinity. He completed his theological training in 1731, and was admitted to the ministry of the Church of Scotland. After a brief spell as presbytery clerk, he was employed by Marischal College as librarian from 1733–6. Following a tour of England, Reid became minister of New Machar in 1737, a position in the gift of the other Aberdonian college, King’s.
Reid’s first publication, ‘An Essay on Quantity; Occasioned by Reading a Treatise in which Simple and Compound Ratios are Applied to Virtue and Merit’, written while Minister of New Machar was presented to the Royal Society in 1748, is a criticism of Hutcheson’s

Life Summary ... Abbreviations REID, THOMAS (1791-1825), naval surgeon and prison reformer, was born in Ireland and educated near Dungannon, County Tyrone. He entered the navy about 1811, passed examinations at the Royal College of Surgeons in London in 1813 and was admitted a member in November 1815. He was appointed a naval surgeon on 10 January 1814. At the instigation of Elizabeth Fry he made voyages as surgeon-superintendent of the convict ships Neptune , to Sydney in 1818, and Morley , to Hobart Town and Sydney in 1820, and both Governor Macquarie and Lieutenant-Governor Sorell reported on his conduct in these voyages with exceptional warmth; but Reid regarded transportation with repugnance, detested its brutalities and declined to make further voyages in convict transports. After arriving in Sydney in the Morley , Reid accompanied Macquarie on his tour of inspection to Bathurst, and the governor described him as 'a most agreeable, good humoured and entertaining friend and associate'. Reid contemplated settling in New South Wales, but decided not to, perhaps because it was a penal settlement. He dedicated his
