John Rawls
Modern Harvard philosopher. In his most famous book, Theory of Justice (1971), John Rawls proposed the idea of 'original position', a mental exercise whereby a group of rational people must establish a principle of fairness (such as distribution of income) without knowing beforehand where on the resulting pecking order they will end up themselves. John Rawls used this device to argue that the optimal arrangement will be to 'maximize the welfare of society's worse-off member', which effectively justifies an egalitarian "no-substitution" social welfare function. John Rawls died of heart failure on November 24, 2002.

IN PRAISE OF JOHN RAWLS,THE MAN WHO MADE MORAL PHILOSOPHY RESPECTABLE AGAINAND WHOSE VIEWS ALSO PROFOUNDLY INFORMED AMERICAN LEGAL THOUGHT
By MICHAEL C. DORF
Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 Philosopher John Rawls died last month. Many of the ideas that he championedincluding, most famously, the principle that a just society should work to improve the lot of its least fortunate membershave fallen out of fashion. Nonetheless, Rawls remained the most important American philosopher since John Dewey. Indirectly, his views of how a democratic constitution secures justice have had a profound impact on American legal thought as well. Rawls's Influence: Making Moral Philosophy Respectable Again Philosophy means the love of knowledge, and to the ancients, the knowledge philosophers loved was all-encompassing. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle propounded theories about the nature of existence and how human beings should live. So too, Enlightenment philosophers like John Locke and Immanuel Kant are as famous for their views on how to organize individual and social lives, as for their views on the organization of the material world.

Rawls Remembered
An appreciation from the Right. By Richard A. Epstein his past Sunday marked the death of Harvard University's John Rawls, widely regarded as the most influential political philosopher of the 20th century. I met Rawls once vicariously and once in person; both encounters only confirmed for me his reputation not only a political thinker, but also as a decent and humble man. As to my vicarious connection, much of his great work, A Theory of Justice
Many years later, long after he was world-famous, Rawls visited the law school at the University of Chicago and attended a lunch at our Round Table, which could seat 10 or 12, but not the full crowd of faculty who wanted the opportunity to talk with him. As a late arrival, I was left sitting at the opposite end of the room. So I introduced myself to him afterwards, and he walked me back to the law school for a few minutes of conversation, even though he had planned to head off in the opposite direction. When I offered to drive him back across Hyde Park, he asked that I not be troubled, and set off on a slow and somewhat labored walk on his own. He did not have it within his power to inconvenience or impose on anyone else.

Blaming John Rawls
24 Jul 2007 03:04 pm I would take issue with a variety of things Linda Hirschman says in her article bashing John Rawls , but surely it's obviously insane to blame Rawls for Democratic Party electoral defeats . I read it again, because I thought Hirschman might be making a more subtle claim, but, no, she's actually describing a causal connection between Democratic defeats and Rawls' philosophy, arguing that "It is not a coincidence that the only successful two-term Democratic presidency of the Age of Rawls was engineered in part for Bill Clinton by Bill Galston, a political theorist with a background in classical thought. " I'm reasonably confident that this actually is a coincidence. You can read the classic essay on political strategy that Galston wrote with Elaine Kamarck "The Politics of Evasion" and you'll see it has very, very, very little to do with the sort of philosophical issues that divide him from Rawls. John Rawls's Theory of Justice
JOHN RAWLS’ LIBERAL-EGALITARIAN
PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
A. INTRODUCTION
Justice is of central importance in political practice and theory. In defending or opposing laws, public policies and administrative decisions of governments, appeals are made to notions of justice. Justice is also invoked in social and political movements, civil disobedience and satyagraha campaigns. Thus, the civil rights or civil liberties movements are essentially movements for justice. So are the dalit, feminist and environmental movements.
While a decent or good society or polity must have several virtues, justice is, according to widespread view, the first of them. In the word of the leading contemporary moral and political philosopher, John Rawls of Harvard University, “justice is the first virtue of social institutions.” He made that statement in his book, A Theory of Justice, which was published in 1971. Some two decades earlier, it was proclaimed in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution that the Democratic Republic of India stood committed to securing to all its citizens “Justice, social economic and political.” It is noteworthy that the Preamble lists justice above the other moral-political values of liberty, equality and fraternity.

  • John Bordley Rawls was one of the major moral and political philosophers of the twentieth century. His work embraced liberalism and egalitarianism, while rejecting UTILITARIANISM and more radical political ideas. His most important work, A Theory of Justice (1971), discusses the idea of "justice as fairness." Rawls was born on February 21, 1921, in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1943 and his doctorate from Princeton in 1950. Rawls was an instructor at Princeton between 1950 and 1952, before attending Oxford University in England as a Fulbright Fellow. Upon his return to the United States in 1953, he served as a professor at Cornell University (1953–59) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1960–62). In 1962, Rawls was appointed professor of philosophy at Harvard University, an...

John Rawls' Philosophy: Theory of Justice
In A Theory of Justice, Rawls attempts to make a rational study of social ethics by using reason to determine what a just society should look like and how a rational group of people would organize themselves. One major topic of interest that Rawls presents is the veil of ignorance concept and its role in the creation of original position. Two further concepts of importance to the theory of a just society are the difference principle and the concept of individual liberty in society. Together, these three concepts provide a basis for the discussion and critique of Rawls' theory and its implications for the pursuance of justice.
Rawls' approach to justice as a theory proposes that principles of justice can be determined through the rational thinking of individuals shrouded by a veil of ignorance. In a purely hypothetical situation, the veil of ignorance creates an original position of equality in which persons under the veil have no knowledge of status, position in society, personal wealth or natural abilities. From behind the veil of ignorance, a rational, objective and disinterested group of people would choose a system of justice that ensures an equal distribution of rights and duties.

    JUSTICE AS FAIRNESS
By JOHN RAWLS 1. It might seem at first sight that the concepts of justice and fairness are the same, and that there is no reason to distinguish them, or to say that one is more fundamental than the other. I think this impression is mistaken. In this paper I wish to show that the fundamental idea in the concept of justice is fairness; and I wish to offer an analysis of the concept of justice from this point of view. To bring out the force of this claim, and the analysis based upon it, I shall then argue that it is this aspect of justice for which utilitarianism, in its classical form, is unable to account, but which is expressed, even if misleadingly, by the idea of the social contract. To start with I shall develop a particular conception of justice by stating and commenting upon two principles which specify it, and by considering the circumstances and conditions under which they may be thought to arise. The principles defining this conception, and the conception itself, are, of course, familiar. It may be possible, however, by using the notion of fairness as a framework, to assemble and to look at them in a new way. Before stating this conception, however, the following preliminary matters should be kept in mind. Throughout I consider justice only as a virtue of social institutions, or what I shall call practices.
