Collapsing bridges, flooded subways, trapped miners: our recent disasters recall a novel from a half century ago. Fortune's Adam Lashinsky explores the nation's 'Atlas Shrugged' moment.
By Adam Lashinsky , Fortune senior writer August 14 2007: 6:16 AM EDT
(Fortune) It was the breaking-news headline last Friday that three construction workers had died in a coal-mine accident in Princeton, Ind., and maybe the markets melting down too, that congealed in my mind a thought I'd been kicking around for a while now: Our country is having an "Atlas Shrugged" moment. Trapped coal miners in Utah, smashed levees in New Orleans, busted steam pipes and flooded subways in New York City, a collapsed bridge over the Mississippi River in Minnesota, an air-traffic-control system stressed to its break point. Could this really be a description of the most prosperous country on the planet? Can these all be coincidences? Is it time for a good old-fashioned conspiracy theory, the type that a reflection on Ayn Rand, Alan Greenspan's early mentor, might inform?

Ayn Rand - Libertarian Find out YOUR R ussian-born Ayn Rand (1905-1982) brought more people into the libertarian movement than anybody else. She did this by making a moral case for individualism and liberty through her dramatic novels. Her first was We The Living (1936), chronicling love and the struggle for liberty amidst Soviet oppression. Then came her first big success, The Fountainhead (1943), about a determined individualist pursuing his vision in a collectivist world. The Fountainhead became a bestseller and was made into a movie starring Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal and Raymond Massey. Anthem (1946) is a bold affirmation of individualism. A short novel, it affords an easy introduction to Rand's ideas. The book goes far beyond more famous anti-authoritarian novels such as Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932), Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon (1941) or George Orwell's Animal Farm (1945) or (1949). Rand's most philosophical novel is

by Lindsay Perigo I doubt that Ayn Rand would have had much enthusiasm for a biography that was simply a time-line, and this writer has no enthusiasm for writing one. Accounts of her extraordinary life can be found in the superb biography by Barbara Branden, The Passion of Ayn Rand , the less elegantly written Judgment Day by Nathaniel Branden, the ARI-sanctioned documentary, Sense of Life , and elsewhere. Suffice it here to note that Ayn Rand was born into a society (Tsarist Russia) steeped in mysticism, self-sacrifice and collectivism, and endured a few years of its ultra-collectivist successor ( Soviet Russia) before escaping to the United States. At nine she had fallen in love with a fictional hero, and decided to become a writer. At thirteen she had decided she already was an atheist. Through her teens she was sustained by a sparkling vision that was a composite of heroic figures from literature, of the world of operetta, and of tantalising intimations of life as it actually was in freer countries, gleaned from foreign movies. Before leaving Russia, she informed one of her university professors that her ideas would one day be part of history. In America, she turned her attention to learning English, and to staying alive. The pursuit of both took her to Hollywood, where she became a screen-writer. As her literary skills improved she concentrated on creating her own versions of the heroes who had inspired her in her youth. These eventually became Howard Roark in

Ayn Rand
In the following lines we tell you about the life of Ayn Rand. It is a sort of Ayn Rand's Biography. Read on to know about Ayn Rands life history.
Ayn Rand was a brilliant novelist and philosopher. She was born Alissa Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. From an early age, she displayed an interest in literature and films. She started writing screenplays and novels at the age of seven. . At the age of 21 Rand graduated from the University of Petrograd in History. In 1926, Rand moved to the United States, and took her surname from the typewriter she used, a Remington-Rand. Rand started to study English, working as a junior screenwriter and movie extra for Hollywood between the years 1926 and 1932.
Rand wrote screenplays for Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In 1934-35, she was a free-lance script reader for RKO Pictures, then for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In Hollywood she also met Frank O'Connor, an actor, whom she married. Rand's first novel, "We The Living" appeared in 1936. Her breakthrough work came with the courtroom play "Night of The January 16th", where the audience was asked to determine the verdict. While collecting material for "The Fountainhead", Rand worked without pay as a typist for Eli Jacques Kahn, and architect in New York City. With Hal Wallis Productions Rand had a special contract, which committed her to work only six months of each year. During the other six months she pursued her own writing.

Some Problems with Ayn Rand's Derivation of Ought from Is
[I posted this to humanities.philosophy.objectivism about November of 1996.] For the past month or two, I have been arguing that Rand's drivation of oughts, if consistently applied, leads to conclusions that few Objectivists would accept, and that Objectivists should therefor reexamine its logic with a more critical eye. That discussion seems to have died down at this point. The purpose of this post is to attack Rand's argument from the other endby going back to the beginning and seeing what is wrong with it. My source is the version of the argument provided in Galt's speech.
1. Existence as the value sought by living things:
"There is only one fundamental alternative in the universe: existence or non-existenceand it pertains to a single class of entities: to living organisms. ... But a plant has no choice of action; ... : it acts automatically to further its life, it cannot act for its own destruction. An animal ... . But so long as it lives, ... it is unable to ignore its own good, unable to decide to choose the evil and act as its own destroyer." The claim here, quite clearly, is that living things other than human beings automatically act for their own survival. That claim is false. A male mantis, for example, mates, even though the final step of the process consists of being eaten by the female. Female mammals get pregnant, even though (especially in species where the male does not help support female and offspring) doing so substantially reduces their chances of survival. If one is going to ascribe values to non-human living things, the purpose of those values, on both empirical and theoretical grounds, is not survival but reproductive success.

Ayn Rand on money
From ATLAS SHRUGGED, by Ayn Rand, page 387: Rearden heard Bertram Scudder, outside the group, say to a girl who made some sound of indignation, "Don't let him disturb you. You know, money is the root of all evil—and he's the typical product of money." Rearden did not think that Francisco could have heard it, but he saw Francisco turning to them with a gravely courteous smile. "So you think that money is the root of all evil?" said Francisco d'Aconia. "Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil? "When you accept money in payment for your effort, you do so only on the conviction that you will exchange it for the product of the effort of others. It is not the moochers or the looters who give value to money. Not an ocean of tears nor all the guns in the world can transform those pieces of paper in your wallet into the bread you will need to survive tomorrow. Those pieces of paper, which should have been gold, are a token of honor— your claim upon the energy of the men who produce. Your wallet is your statement of hope that somewhere in the world around you there are men who will not default on that moral principle which is the root of money. Is this what you consider evil?

The Only Path To Tomorrow
Ayn Rand
Readers Digest, January 1944, pp. 88-90 The greatest threat to mankind and civilization is the spread of the totalitarian philosophy. Its best ally is not the devotion of its followers but the confusion of its enemies. To fight it, we must understand it. Throughout history, no tyrant ever rose to power except on the claim of representing ``the common good.´´ Napoleon ``served the common good´´ of France. Hitler is ``serving the common good´´ of Germany. Horrors which no man would dare consider for his own selfish sake are perpetrated with a clear conscience by ``altruists´´ who justify themselves by-the common good. No tyrant has ever lasted long by force of arms alone. Men have been enslaved primarily by spiritual weapons. And the greatest of these is the collectivist doctrine that the supremacy of the state over the individual constitutes the common good. No dictator could rise if men held as a sacred faith the conviction that they have inalienable rights of which they cannot be deprived for any cause whatsoever, by any man whatsoever, neither by evildoer nor supposed benefactor This is the basic tenet of individualism, as opposed to collectivism. Individualism holds that man is an independent entity with an inalienable right to the pursuit of his own happiness in a society where men deal with one another as equals.
