Confusion of sign and object is original sin coeval with the word. Willard Van Orman Quine It is one of the consolations of philosophy that the benefit of showing how to dispense with a concept does not hinge on dispensing with it. Willard Van Orman Quine Language is a social art. Willard Van Orman Quine Language is conceived in sin and science is its redemption. Willard Van Orman Quine Meaning is what essence becomes when it is divorced from the object of reference and wedded to the word. Willard Van Orman Quine One man's observation is another man's closed book or flight of fancy. Willard Van Orman Quine 'Ouch' is not independent of social training. One has only to prick a foreigner to appreciate that it is an English word. Willard Van Orman Quine Physics investigates the essential nature of the world, and biology describes a local bump. Psychology, human psychology, describes a bump on the bump. Willard Van Orman Quine The familiar material objects may not be all that is real, but they are admirable examples.

The Homepage Finder ". Failing that, you might try using a search engine, say, " Yahoo! Arts: Humanities: Philosophy: Philosophers ". For Willard van Orman Quine, neither of these options yields much useful information. Alternatively, you might use many search engines to find as many pages as you can that discuss Quine, and then save links to them. One way to do this easily is via the " go2net MetaCrawler "; a search on the phrase "Willard van Orman Quine" yielded many sites, including the one under review.

In our hands it develops and changes, through more or less arbitrary and deliberate revisions and additions of our own, more or less directly occasioned by the continuing stimulation of our sense organs. By Steven D. Levitt My good friend Dave Eldan sends me interesting tidbits on a regular basis. More often than not, they are pulled from obituaries. Everyone needs a hobby, I guess. I found his latest missive very interesting. It is from an obituary by Morton White for the great philosopher and mathematician Willard Van Orman Quine . For me the problem of induction is a problem about the world: a problem of how we, as we are now (by our present scientific lights), in a world we never made, should stand better than random, or coin-tossing chances changes of coming out right when we predict by inductions. . . . Willard Van Orman Quine Source: Philosophy of Logic by Willard Van Orman Quine Add Comment Print Send Permalink More quotes about: books logic study It is obvious that truth in general depends on both language and extra-linguistic fact. The statement 'Brutus killed Caesar' would be false if the world had been different in certain ways, but it would also be false if the word 'killed' happened rather to have the sense of 'begat'. Thus one is tempted to suppose in general that the truth of a statement is somehow analysable into a linguistic component and a factual component. Given this supposition it next seems reasonable that in some statements the factual component should be null; and that these are the analytic statements. But for all its a priori reasonableness, a boundary between the analytic and synthetic statements simply has not been drawn. That there is such a distinction to be drawn at all is an unempirical dogma of empiricists, a metaphysical article of faith.

Quine, Willard (Van Orman)

US philosopher and logician with a highly scientific view of the world. He is often described as a nominalist because he believes that universals do not have any real existence outside of thought and language, and a pragmatist because he holds that our minds group together properties in the ways that are most useful for us. Quine's theory of the indeterminacy of translation states that assured translation between two languages (or even within one language) is impossible in principle, because the designation of any two words or phrases as synonymous is impossible to justify completely. This is set out in Word and Object Quine was born in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from Oberlin College and Harvard University. He was professor of philosophy at Harvard from 1936 until his retirement.

Willard van Ormon Quine, the Harvard professor, one of the foremost philosophers of the 20th century, died on Christmas Day at age 92 in Boston after a brief illness. Known to his friends as Van, Willard Quine arrived in Oberlin from his family's home in Akron, Ohio, in 1926 after selling his cherished stamp collection to help finance his tuition.
His older brother Douglas had attended Oberlin, so Mr. Quine was somewhat familiar with the campus. Among his new college friends was a group of enthusiastic poker-players, who, while shuffling cards one day, began to discuss their excitement about the philosophy of Bertrand Russell. Mr. Quine, who was captivated, imbued himself in Russell's viewpoints and decided immediately to major in mathematics with a minor in the philosophy of math.
In his autobiography, The Time of My Life, he recalled his four years at Oberlin as "idyllic." His rooming house, filled with kindred spirits, was "an ideal setting in which to wax articulate." Following his sophomore year, he and two friends spent the summer crossing the continent, jumping onto moving boxcars, and spending nights on benches or in prisons. This was the first of the adventures that led to his lifelong insatiable desire to travel.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Quine was educated at Oberlin College and at Harvard University, where he became a member of the faculty in 1936. Quine was noted for his claim that the way one uses language determines what kinds of things one is committed to saying exist. Moreover, the justification for speaking one way rather than another, just as the justification for adopting one conceptual system rather than another, was a thoroughly pragmatic one for Quine. He was also known for his criticism of the traditional distinction between synthetic statements (empirical, or factual, propositions) and analytic statements (necessarily true propositions). Quine made major contributions to set theory , a branch of mathematical logic concerned with the relationship between classes, and to the wider debate on the relationship between existence and meaning.
