The Father of Numbers Pythagoras, the son of Mnesarchus and Pythais, was born on the island of Samos, off the coast of Asia Minor (what is now mostly Turkey), about 569 BC. Pythais was a native of Samos. Mnesarchus was a merchant from Tyre. An apocryphal story says that he brought grain to Samos during a famine and was granted citizenship of Samos out of gratitude. Pythagoras probably had at least two brothers, perhaps three. Little is known about his childhood. He apparently grew up on Samos, but traveled with his father. It has been said he and his father returned to Tyre on at least one occasion and also traveled to Italy.

Samos was at this time one of the colonies that had been developed by the city states of ancient Greece centred upon Asia Minor and the islands lying off its coasts. Such colonisation had been encouraged moreso by population pressures and political turmoils in ancient Greece rather than by the prospect of trading opportunities.   At this remove it is difficult to be precise about Pythagoras and his background, 570 B.C. is rather a long time ago and records were not really maintained even about prominent or controversial figures.   It is suggested that his mother came from amongst the colonial Greeks of Samos but that his father was a Phoenician craftsperson from Tyre who worked with precious metals and who had been granted citizenship rights after bringing corn to Samos at a time of famine.   Pythagoras seems to have had an impressive birthmark on his thigh that, amongst his fellows, was held to be a mark of divine favour - he was considered to have had a "Golden Thigh."

He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. We do have details of Pythagoras's life from early biographies which use important original sources yet are written by authors who attribute divine powers to him, and whose aim was to present him as a god-like figure. What we present below is an attempt to collect together the most reliable sources to reconstruct an account of Pythagoras's life. There is fairly good agreement on the main events of his life but most of the dates are disputed with different scholars giving dates which differ by 20 years. The interested reader will have recognised the significance of geometry in all these discoveries. This final essay on the Pythagoreans will attempt to describe some of their contributions to, and influence on, the body of geometry. A. Brief History of Geometry to the time of Pythagoras As has been discussed in the earlier essays, there are few surviving works from this period. Much of what follows is generally accepted as the history of geometry at this time. The principal source of information concerning very early Greek geometry is the Eudemian Summary which is found in the introduction to Proclus' (500 A.D.) "Commentary of Euclid, Book I". Unfortunately the original reference, "The History of Geometry" by Eudemus (370 B.C.), who was a pupil of Aristotle, is lost. This book apparently gave a full account of the developments in geometry to about 335B.C. It is believed that Proclus had reference to it for his summary. Samos Pythagoras Samos: Pythagoras of Samos Greece, Eastern Aegean Pythagoras in Samos: Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos in 570 BC. This island lies slightly off the western coast of Asia Minor. His mother was native of Samos and his father was a merchant from Tyre. He studied with the priest of Memphis, who was well-known for his wisdom. After Memphis, he studied at the temples of Tyre and Byblos in Phoenicia. It is most likely in Egypt where he came up with his geometric principles that would lead to his famous theorems. The evidence of his Egyptian inspirations is called the Berlin Papyrus. His society had very strict rules of conduct. The inner circle of the society was called Mathmetikoi. As a member of the society, you had to live at the school, have no personal possessions and had to follow a vegetarian diet. They did allow students from other areas to attend the school. These students, called Akousmatics, were permitted to eat meat and own a few personal things. As a whole, the members of this society were known as Pythagoreans and had a very structured life of religious teaching, common meals, exercise, reading and philosophical study. They had to sing to the Greek god Apollo on a regular basis. They believed that they could use the lyre to cure illnesses of the soul and body. One had to do poetry recitations before and after sleep since they believed this exercise could help improve human memory.
