Home Site Map Living Ontologists Kit Fine and the Ontology of Modal Actualism INTRODUCTION "My aim in this paper is to help lay the conceptual and methodological foundations for the study of realism. I come to two main conclusions: first, that there is a primitive metaphysical concept of reality, one that cannot be understood in fundamentally different terms; and second, that questions of what is real are to be settled upon the basis of considerations of ground. The two conclusions are somewhat in tension with one another, for the lack of a definition of the concept of reality would appear to stand in the way of developing a sound methodology for determining its application; and one of my main concerns has been to show how the tension between the two might be resolved. The paper is in two main parts. In the first, I point to the difficulties in making out a metaphysical conception of reality. I begin by distinguishing this conception from the ordinary conception of reality (§ 1) and then show how the two leading contenders for the metaphysical conception - the factual and the irreducible - both appear to resist formulation in other terms. This leads to the quietist challenge, that questions of realism are either meaningless or pointless (§4); and the second part of the paper (§§5-10) is largely devoted to showing how this challenge might be met. I begin by introducing the notion of ground (§5) and then show how it can be used as a basis for resolving questions both of factuality (§§6-7) and of irreducibility (§§8-9). I conclude with some remarks on the essential unity of these two questions and of the means by which they are to be answered (§ 10)."

From 1994-2002 he was the manager of the User Service Team in the University Computing Service at the University of Glasgow. He was also deputy director of a UK-wide support centre for computers in the teaching of statistics (CTI). In 1997, Currall took part in putting together the University's Information Strategy framework and was subsequently made Information Strategy Co-ordinator, an area that has formed the bulk of his formal job ever since. From 1997-2000 he co-led the Effective Records Management project, which carried out fundamental research on management of organisational records in digital form. Since 2002, he has been a Senior Research Fellow of the Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute (HATII), where he is developing applied research into information access and more theoretical work on the nature of digital objects. The gate assembly is moved by the pneumatic cylinder between an open and closed position with respect to the openings. The gate assembly includes a gate which is mounted on a carriage, and the carriage is moved by the pneumatic cylinder between a first position in which the gate is open, and a second position in which the gate is closed. A feature of the gate valve of the invention is that when the gate is open, a smooth bore is provided through the valve aperture with electrical surface conductivity for short-circuiting stray radio frequency electric currents. Ross, engaged in an extensive financial fraud between 1997 and 1999 by inflating the company's reported earnings in its filings with the Commission. The Commission's Complaint also alleges that two of the company's auditors engaged in the fraud by recklessly causing their accounting firm, Arthur Andersen LLP, to issue an unqualified audit report on Styling's 1998 year-end financial statements and by failing to object to false and misleading statements in Styling's 1999 first and second quarter reports. The Commission also alleges that Styling's fraudulent accounting practices continued through the first two quarters of 1999, when the company improperly booked millions of dollars of sales. In June 1999, it charges, Styling attempted to cover up its fraud by writing off $5.1 million of uncollectible accounts receivable and attributing the lost revenue to a strategic business decision.

Norman Palmer Mr Benn Gunn writes: It is with great sadness and regret to record the passing of yet another old comrade and friend to many in the 1st battalion in Malaya, - 22358278 Pte Norman Palmer. Norman was taken ill just after Christmas 2001 and died of cancer on the 5th March this year. His funeral took place in hartlepool on Monday 11th March. Norman joined the 1st Battalion at Yong Peng in 1950. he stayed with 12 Pl 'D' Company as Pl Signaller for the whole of his National Service until 1952. He loved the Regiment and was always to be seen wearing its cap badge with great pride. Norman kept in contact with many chums he joined up with, including Brian Stenchoin whose elder daughter Anne was his God-daughter. His funeral was attended by many friends and comrades from the Regiment. This included his old Platoon Commander of 12 PI, the Rev Clive Artley. To his widow, Joyce, son Gary, grandchildren, sisters and brother, we offer our sincere condolences and sympathy. Corporal Francis Charles Patrick The Regimental Secretary writes: RHQ has heard from the grandson of ex Cpl Francis Charles Patrick, a former member of the Regiment and GHA, who lived in London had died on the 12th March. He served in the 4th Bn during the war until becoming a POW after Gazala. He was in two camps in Italy before finishing in Stalag IVB at Muhlberg on the River Elbe east of Leipzig. A painting of this camp is displayed in the Regimental Museum.

Photo by James Delgado, 1988 The 1889 tug Arthur Foss , ex- Wallowa , is a preserved historic vessel owned and maintained by Northwest Seaport Museum, Inc. of Seattle, Washington. Arthur Foss is moored at Kirkland, Washington on Lake Washington at the Moss Bay Marina. Arthur Foss as Wallowa and as Rebuilt and Maintained As built in 1889 and launched as Wallowa , the vessel was 111.6 feet in length with a 23.9-foot beam, a 11.6-foot depth of hold, and a 15-foot draft. Wallowa was registered at 225 gross tonnage and 127 net tonnage. [1] Built of Douglas fir, the tug's wooden hull was heavily built with 8- x 7-inch double-sawn frames, wooden knees, 4-inch thick outer hull and ceiling planking, treenail-fastened. The 15-inch thick keel was built with a 2- 1/2-inch thick ironbark shoe, and the hull above the turn of the bilge is sheathed with 1-inch thick ironbark. The tug's form then, as now, was of a "typical" form for this type of craft prior to the Second World War. James Long (Fairfield University) The organizational meeting of the Society for Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy took place in Washington, D.C. on December 28, 1977. The meeting followed an Agenda prepared by Professors Arthur Hyman and James J. Walsh. The meeting was attended by thirty-three persons.
