A Bibliography of Non-Standard Logics Peter Suber Philosophy Department Earlham College In the kinds of non-standard logics included, this bibliography aims for completeness, although it has not yet succeeded. In the coverage of any given non-standard logic, it does not at all aim for completeness. Instead it aims to include works suitable as introductions for those who are already familiar with standard first-order logic. Looking at these non-standard logics gives us an indirect, but usefully clear and comprehensive idea of the usually hazy notion of "standardness". In standard first-order logics:
  • Wffs are finite in length (although there may be infinitely many of them).
  • Rules of inference take only finitely many premises.
  • There are only two truth-values, "truth" and "falsehood".
  • Truth-values of given proposition symbols do not change within a given interpretation, only between or across interpretations.
  • All propositional operators and connectives are truth-functional.
  • "p ~p" is provable even if we do not have p or ~p separately; that is, the principle of excluded middle holds.

Born in the district of Cumbria in northwest England almost a century ago, Arthur Porter describes a remarkable life with eloquent sensitivity and charming candor. This memoir by a major contributor to modern science is filled with vivid accounts of both his personal experiences and professional accomplishments. As a third-year student at the University of Manchester, Porter worked with Douglas Hartree, one of the most influential computer pioneers of his day. Porter was also a colleague of Marshall McLuhan. His faculty assignments have taken him to the University of Toronto, the University of London, the University of Manchester, the University of Saskatchewan, and the Royal Military College of Science. A scientist yes, but with catholic interests: He has chaired a Royal Commission, a World’s Fair Advisory Committee and several advisory bodies on topics like environmental protection, nuclear power and automation and employment. Professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, Porter was recently awarded an honorary degree from the University of Manchester. Arthur Porter is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He and his wife Patricia are residents of Bermuda Village, North Carolina.

http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/A/htmlA/arthurbeatr/arthurbeatr.htm
ARTHUR, BEATRICE U.S. Actor Bea Arthur stands five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches tall in her stocking feet, and has a voice that one reviewer characterized as "deep as a pothole." Her formidable stature and booming vocal register made her an unlikely leading lady in an industry driven by a narrow regime of feminine beauty. But as character traits for Maude Finley, they proved to be the perfect foil for the sexist bravado of Archie Bunker in Norman Lear's 1970s sitcom, All In the Family , in which Arthur first appeared in the role. The spin-off series, Maude was created for her virtually overnight. As opinionated and caustic in her own way as Archie, Maude Finley was instead, a crusader for women's liberation, the woman in charge. And in the nascent gender consciousness of the 1970s, the Women's Movement's fictional spokeswoman had to be big and booming. Television viewers' love affair with the character Arthur created in Maude has resulted in a struggle with the actors' nemesistypecasting. She was a recognized actress on Broadway before making the move to television, appearing in Woody Allen's The Floating Lightbulb

Norman Bluhm was born in Chicago in 1921, although as a child he lived in Italy for eight years. His principle education was architecture, and he studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology with Mies van der Rohe. He also studied briefly in Florence before moving to Paris in 1947 to continue studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was exposed to the ideas of the Bauhaus philosophy of bringing together aesthetically arts and crafts. Prior to and after his studies, Bluhm was a member of the Air Force and served in World War II. After World War II, he lived in Paris with other hopeful American writers and artists of the expatriate scene. There he developed an interest in nude painting. In 1956 he moved to New York. The Cedar Tavern was a favorite gathering place where he convened with other painters and writers, such as Frank OHara, Franz Kline, William de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock. Among the work of this noted group were the twenty-six Bluhm-OHara spontaneous poem paintings, composed in Bluhms studio atop the old Tiffany Glass Building in 1960. New York University owns the majority of these poems.

On The Beat
Norman Wisdom Comedy Film from 1962
Article inspired by an enquiry from Jed McGuire who is researching old film locations.
The article contains 69 small pictures. They will take a short time to arrive. Windsor has often been used as a location for filming, most famously perhaps in a Norman Wisdom film 'On The Beat' from 1962 where Norman is pursued by a vast army of policemen. The story line is that Pitkin, (Norman Wisdom), a car park attendant and dogsbody at a police station, longs to be a policeman like his father, but he is too short. But that does not stop him dressing in his father's uniform, leading to an opportunity to help a pretty American tourist and referee a boys' football match, because he has a whistle! It's the use of the whistle that leads to the chase by seemingly thousands of policemen through the streets of 'London'. Once captured he loses his job at the police station but has to be persuaded by the top brass to come back to work for them because he has an uncanny likeness to a big-time criminal that the police are desperate to catch.

http://www.caerleon.net/history/arthur/page3.htm
During the years 500 - 550AD the Britons appear to have held back the Saxon advance. However, in the following years they were forced back into Cornwall and Wales. The territory held by the Saxons eventually became known as England and the people in Wales were called 'Welsh' from the Saxon word 'weala' meaning 'foreigners'. (It's worth noting that the Welsh called themselves 'Cymry' meaning 'fellow countrymen' and their country 'Cymru'.) Now, the importance of this division is that the Saxon conquerors were hardly likely to be interested in the exploits of a 'foreign' leader who was successful in holding them at bay. Maybe it is for this reason that Arthur is not mentioned in early English chronicles while his name occurs in Welsh ones. The first reliable reference to Arthur is in the 'Historia Brittonum' written by the Welsh monk Nennius around the year 830AD. Surprisingly he refers to Arthur as a warrior - not a king. He lists twelve battles fought by Arthur including Mount Badon and the City Of The Legion.

Listening to Users . . . . . . because they have a special knowledge, and an intimate familiarity with data and process. We ignore them at our peril. Listening is an attentive and active process that engages everybody. I enjoy it. Designing Systems that Work Design is not cleaning up the mess, or adding ornamentation at the end. It’s a process of thinking, organizing, trying, testing, reworking, creating anew, refining, honing, and more. Successful systems work because they are well conceived, and responsive to user needs, styles, wishes, and habits. They continue to work because they are well structured, and can be easily maintained and enhanced. Designing a user interface involves creating a process by which users interact with many elements of their work world. This is much more than just a pretty set of screens. All my background in psychology, business consulting, graphic design and layout, systems work, and Progress programming come into play for this task. A Value Proposition:
