Karl Raimund Popper
Born in Vienna (then Austria-Hungary) in 1902 to middle-class parents of Jewish origins, Karl Popper was educated at the University of Vienna. He took a Ph.D. in philosophy in 1928, and taught in secondary school from 1930 to 1936. In 1937, the rise of Nazism and the threat of the Anschluss led Popper to emigrate to New Zealand, where he became lecturer in philosophy at Canterbury University College New Zealand (at Christchurch). In 1946, he moved to England to become reader in logic and scientific method at the London School of Economics, where he was appointed professor in 1949. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1976. He retired from academic life in 1969, though he remained intellectually active until his death in 1994. He was invested with the Insignia of a Companion of Honour in 1982. Popper won many awards and honors in his field, including the Lippincott Award of the American Political Science Association, the Sonning Prize, and fellowships in the Royal Society, British Academy, London School of Economics, King's College London, and Darwin College Cambridge. Austria awarded him the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold.

Karl Popper discussed at BBC
The BBC's Radio 4 In Our Time podcast covers Karl Popper this week. Popper is credited as being one of the most significant philosophers of the last century. From a knowledge management perspective, his ideas are used frequently in discussions about the nature of knowledge and how a company could "do knowledge management." In Our Time - Karl Popper Karl Popper is one of the most significant philosophers of the 20th Century, whose ideas about science and politics robustly challenged the accepted ideas of the day. He strongly resisted the prevailing empiricist consensus that scientists' theories could be proved true. For what it's worth, I have found In Our Time to be a great show. The BBC's Melvyn Bragg runs the discussion with a fine hand, and the discussion participants are excellent resources for the listener.

Quote: Karl Popper
Sir Karl R. Popper is the philosopher of science who championed the idea of falsification. Many Creationist books have printed this quote: "I have come to the conclusion that Darwinism is not a testable scientific theory, but a metaphysical research programme - a possible framework for testable theories." Unended Quest: An Intellectual Autobiography 1976, La Salle, IN: Open Court Press If you read the book, Popper is actually raising the famous "natural selection is a tautology " objection. Popper recanted two years later: "I have changed my mind about the testability and logical status of the theory of natural selection; and I am glad to have an opportunity to make a recantation. ... The theory of natural selection may be so formulated that it is far from tautological." Natural Selection and the Emergence of Mind, Dialectica 32:339-355, 1978. See 344-346 for this quote. and he repeated the recantation three years after that: "... some people think that I have denied scientific character to the historical sciences,

Karl Popper and Jean Piaget: A Rationale for Constructivism
Educational Forum, The Fall 2006 by Harlow, Steve Cummings, Rhoda Aberasturi, Suzanne M Abstract The current faddish use of the term constructivism has taken on as many different definitions as the number of people attempting to define it. This essay clarifies the meaning of constructivism through an examination of Karl Popper's and Jean Piaget's theories. The authors provide a rationale for the use of Popper's paradigm of "Three Worlds" and how his criterion for open and closed theories serves as a framework for Piaget's constructivist theory.

Summary:
Dr Alan Saunders presents a portrait of one of this century's greatest philosophers, Sir Karl Popper.
Transcript:
Alan Saunders: Some people, however - even some very distinguished scientists - have taken a different view of things. Sir John Eccles: Sherrington and had accepted the ordinary philosophy of science there; namely that you do experiments, you publish the results, you go on and do some more and you have a good mainstream of investigation and that as a good scientist you should not be wrong. Alan Saunders: Sir John Eccles , who won the Nobel Prize for Phsyiology in 1963 Sir John Eccles: Sir Karl Popper: Alan Saunders: Music: I think I must have been the week between Christmas and New Year of 1974. I’d been given money, or perhaps a book token, as a present. I was sitting by a warm fire (because this was the northern hemisphere) reading one of my purchases, which was a book on philosophy because philosophy was my subject at Uni. This is the first thing I read: “I think that I have solved a major philosophical problem, the problem of induction. I must have reached the solution in 1927 or thereabouts. This solution has been extremely fruitful and it has enabled me to solve a good number of other philosophical problems.”

DK Matai - March 13, 2007 The modern notion of the relationship between Science and Truth, was espoused by Sir Karl Popper. Quantum Mechanics is a good Scientific theory precisely because it is falsifiable and the same can be said to be the case for General and Special Relativity when beyond certain boundary conditions they all becomes false. That which is falsifiable is Science! That which is True may Not be Science at all! Such is the paradox humanity has created! Most scientists now believe that in order to be a real scientific theory or model, it must be falsifiable. This means that a given model of reality must make testable predictions, such that if one were to design an experiment to test those predictions and the data correlated well with the predictions, then one's theory would be supported, BUT that does not make the theory or model TRUE. On the other hand if one designed the experiment and the data did not correlate at all with one's prediction within specific boundary conditions, then one's theory would be FALSE. No amount of supporting evidence would ever make one's theory true, but any amount of evidence against one's theory some little amount or a lot would render it false within those boundary conditions. Scientific theories cannot provide us with truth, rather they are models of what we as humans percieve the world to be. This does not mean that science is subjective, because not all models of reality are equal. Some models of reality can predict and explain phenomena much better than others, and some models are more falsifiable than others. What does this mean?
