Sir Karl Popper
(1902-1994) was Professor of Logic and Scientific Method at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Among his works are The Spell of Plato and The High Tide of Prophecy: Hegel, Marx, and the Aftermath , the two volumes of The Open Society and Its Enemies (Princeton Paperbacks), The Logic of Scientific Discovery The Poverty of Historicism , and Conjectures and Refutations . The Popper books not all of them have been translated into 37 languages by now. JAS Fallowfield, Manor Road, PENN, Buckinghamshire. July 20th 1961. My dear Doctor Szasz, Thank you very much for sending me your truly admirable book, The Myth of Mental Illness . Although my eyesight makes reading difficult, I found it so fascinating that I read it at one go. It is a most important book, and it marks a real revolution. Besides, it is written in that only too rare spirit of a man who wants to be understood rather than to impress. I feel certain that you will take it as a re- affirmation of my admiration of your great work if I indicate here, though only very sketchily, some criticism. (1) Although you have been very successful in resisting modern fashions of doubtful value, and especially the terrible ephemerally-modern jargon of modern books in this field, I do think that you have [not] entirely escaped from the seductions and temptations of a school of thought which I have dubbed 'instrumentalism' and described in my article on Berkeley in the BJPS IV, 1953, pp. 26 ff. (I have criticized it more fully in my contribution to volume iii of

Popper, Karl Raimund (1902–94)
Popper belongs to a generation of Central European ©migr© scholars that profoundly influenced thought in the English-speaking countries in this century. His greatest contributions are in philosophy of science and in political and social philosophy. Popper’s ‘falsificationism’ reverses the usual view that accumulated experience leads to scientific hypotheses; rather, freely conjectured hypotheses precede, and are tested against, experience. The hypotheses that survive the testing process constitute current scientific knowledge. His general epistemology, ‘critical rationalism’, commends the Socratic method of posing questions and critically discussing the answers offered to them. He considers knowledge in the traditional sense of certainty, or in the modern sense of justified true belief, to be unobtainable. After the Anschluss , Popper was stimulated by the problem of why democracies had succumbed to totalitarianism and applied his critical rationalism to political philosophy. Since we have no infallible ways of getting or maintaining good government

Austrian-born philosopher of science who defines science as a discipline founded on the creation of hypotheses that predict phenomena, preferably new ones, that can be tested. Popper's Principle holds that testability rather than truth should be the criterion for judging scientific truths. This principle views scientific progress in a different light than does Planck's Principle.

From Central European University. The primary task of the Popper Project is to research, edit and publish books from the Karl Popper Archives, which the CEU has on loan from the Ianus Foundation. These 473 reels of microfilm contain the late Sir Karl Popper's unpublished manuscripts and correspondence through 1984. They represent a complete copy of the original papers currently housed in Stanford University’s Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace. The project envisions the joint publication by Routledge and CEU Press of more than ten volumes of Popper’s works, including correspondence, collected essays and complete texts. Kranz, Russell. n.d. Karl Popper's challenge. http://www.creationism.org/csshs/v02n4p20.htm
Response:
  • Popper's statement of nonfalsifiability was pretty mild, not as extensive as it is often taken. He applied it only to natural selection, not evolution as a whole, and he allowed that some testing of natural selection was possible, just not a significant amount.
Moreover, he said that natural selection is a useful theory. A "metaphysical research programme" was to him not a bad thing; it is an essential part of science, as it guides productive research by suggesting predictions. He said of Darwinism, And yet, the theory is invaluable. I do not see how, without it, our knowledge could have grown as it has done since Darwin. In trying to explain experiments with bacteria which become adapted to, say, penicillin, it is quite clear that we are greatly helped by the theory of natural selection. Although it is metaphysical, it sheds much light upon very concrete and very practical researches. It allows us to study adaptation to a new environment (such as a penicillin-infested environment) in a rational way: it suggests the existence of a mechanism of adaptation, and it allows us even to study in detail the mechanism at work. And it is the only theory so far which does all that. (Popper 1976, 171-172)

Mr. Rector, Mr. Dean, Ladies and Gentlemen To the 3rd Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University and its Dean, Professor Hoeschl, and all of you who have come here today, I wish to express my deeply felt thanks for the great honour which you are conferring on me. To be in Prague again, after 60 years – and those were difficult years for everybody – this is a great experience. I visited Prague from Vienna in 1912 and 1913, before the First World War, and also several times during the war. And it was at the latest in 1934 that I decided that Prague was the most beautiful city in Central Europe. This has not changed. But everything else has. 60 years ago, there lived in the Hradcany Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, the great founder of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, and its Liberator President. I deeply admire Masaryk. He was one of the most important pioneers of what I have called, one or two years after Masaryk's death, the Open Society. He was a pioneer of an open society, both in theory and in practice; indeed, the greatest of its pioneers between Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill. Of the successor states of the Austrian Empire, now defeated and improverished, Masaryk's creation, the Czechoslovak Republic, was the only successful one. It was a financial, an industrial, a political, an educational and a cultural success; and it was well defended.

Karl Popper and Evolution: Is Evolutionary Theory Based on a Tautology?
Quite a few creationists try to rely upon comments by Karl Popper in their attacks on evolutionary theory. In a sense they have a point because Popper did criticize evolutionary theory; but they ignore the fact that Popper later retracted his criticism after he learned that he was mistaken. He demonstrated what being a scientist is all about. In the September/October issue of Skeptical Inquirer , Massimo Pigliucci writes: Perhaps the best-known philosophical criticism of evolution was put forth by Karl Popper, who once claimed that “Darwinism is not a testable scientific theory, but a metaphysical research program” (Unended Quest, 1976). ... Popper proposed his famous criterion of falsification to solve the demarcation problem: good science is done when hypotheses can be shown to be false (if they indeed are). That’s where the philosopher’s criticism of evolutionary theory originated from. Popper understood evolutionary biologists to say that their theory predicts that natural selection allows only the fittest organisms to survive; but, he countered, the “fittest” organisms are defined as those who survive, which makes the statement tautological. Some creationists make similar criticisms today, but they fail to appreciate the fact that Popper retracted his criticism:
