Porphyry: On the Life of Plotinus and the Arrangement of his Work
from Plotinus: The Enneads translated by Stephen MacKenna Typed by Owlsmirror/crows January 2004 1. Plotinus, the philosopher our contemporary, seemed ashamed of being in the body. So deeply rooted was this feeling that he could never be induced to tell of his ancestry, his parentage, or his birthplace. He showed, too, an unconquerable reluctance to sit to a painter of a sculptor, and when Amelius persisted in urging him to allow of a portrait being made he asked him, 'Is it not enough to carry about this image in which nature has enclosed us? Do you really think I must also consent to leave, as a desired spectacle to posterity, an image of the image?' In view of this determined refusal Amelius brought his friend Carterius, the best artist of the day, to the Conferences, which were open to every comer, and saw to it that by long observation of the philosopher he caught his most striking personal traits. From the impressions thus stored in mind the artist drew a first sketch; Amelius made various suggestions towards bringing our the resemblance, and in this way, without the knowledge of Plotinus, the genius of Carterius gave us a lifelike portrait. 2. Plotinus was often distressed by an intestinal complaint, but declined clysters, pronouncing the use of such remedies unbecoming in an elderly man: in the same way he refused such medicaments as contain any substance taken from wild beasts or reptiles: all the more, he remarked, since he could not approve of eating the flesh of animals reared for the table.

Plotinus was an Egyptian by birth, and a native of Lycopolis. The Keynote of Plotinus' whole nature is summed up in the word impersonality. He was so resolved to keep his personality in the background that he refused to tell the place of his birth or the names of his parents. When he was asked to have his portrait painted he replied: Source: wisdomworld.org Plotinus seems to be one of the first to argue against the still popular notion of causal Astrology. In the late tractate 2.3, "Are the stars causes?", Plotinus makes the argument that specific stars influencing one's fortune (a common hellenistic theme) attributes irrationality to a perfect universe, and eliminates moral turpitude. He does... claim the stars and planets are ensouled, as witnessed by their movement. Source: en.wikipedia.org

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Plotinus Plotinus, ploh TY nuhs (205?-270?), was the founder of a school of Greek philosophy known as Neoplatonism. He developed Neoplatonism from the philosophy of Plato (see Neoplatonism ). Plotinus said that the material world is unreal, politics trivial, the body a temporary prison for the soul, and life a journey through a landscape of illusion. Reality lay "yonder" in a solitary perfect being, The One, the source of all truth, goodness, and beauty. He said pure souls may hope to "return" there. Sometimes this return occurred as a mystical vision. Plotinus believed he had experienced such a vision.

1. Life and Writings
Owing to the unusually fulsome biography by Plotinus' disciple Porphyry, we know more about Plotinus' life than we do about most ancient philosophers'. The main facts are these. Plotinus was born in Lycopolis, Egypt in 204 or 205 C.E. When he was 28, a growing interest in philosophy led him to the feet of one Ammonius Saccas in Alexandria. After ten or eleven years with this obscure though evidently dominating figure, Plotinus was moved to study Persian and Indian philosophy. In order to do so, he attached himself to the military expedition of Emperor Gordian III to Persia in 243. The expedition was aborted when Gordian was assassinated by his troops. Plotinus thereupon seems to have abandoned his plans, making his way to Rome in 245. There he remained until his death in 270 or 271. Porphyry informs us that during the first ten years of his time in Rome, Plotinus lectured exclusively on the philosophy of Ammonius. During this time he also wrote nothing. Porphyry tells us that when he himself arrived in Rome in 263, the first 21 of Plotinus' treatises had already been written. The remainder of the 54 treatises constituting his

(Being not so much the Portal, as part of the temporary Scaffold to the Portal of this new Philosophy.) "Few of us doubt, gentlemen, that human life on this earth is but a state of probation; which among other things implies, that here below, we mortals have only to do with things provisional. Accordingly, I hold that all our so-called wisdom is likewise but provisional. "This preamble laid down, I begin. "It seems to me, in my visions, that there is a certain most rare order of human souls, which if carefully carried in the body will almost always and everywhere give Heaven's own Truth, with some small grains of variance. For peculiarly coming from God, the sole source of that heavenly truth, and the great Greenwich hill and tower from which the universal meridians are far out into infinity reckoned; such souls seems as London sea-chronometers ( Greek , time-namers) which as the London ship floats past Greenwich down the Thames, are accurately adjusted by Greenwich time, and if heedfully kept, will still give that same time, even though carried to the Azores. True, in nearly all cases of long, remote voyages to China, say chronometers of the best make, and the most carefully treated, will gradually more or less vary from Greenwich time, without the possibility of the error being corrected by direct comparison with their great standard; but skillful and devout observations of the stars by the sextant will serve materially to lessen such errors. And besides, there is such a thing as

Description
In Ennead II.1 (40) Plotinus is primarily concerned to argue for the everlastingness of the universe, the heavens, and the heavenly bodies as individual substances. Here he must grapple both with the philosophical issue of personal identity through time and with the rich tradition of cosmology which pitted the Platonists against the Aristotelians and Stoics. What results is a historically informed cosmological sketch explaining the constitution of the heavens as well as sublunar and celestial motion. This book contains an extensive introduction aimed at providing the necessary background in Platonic, Aristotelian, and Stoic cosmology, the text itself, and a line-by-line commentary designed to elucidate its philosophical, philological and historical details.

Ideas
- The soul is more important and real than the body or any other material object. - In its pure state, the World-Soul is the same as the Intellect (or Mind). - The Intellect is a system of Platonic ideas that exists simultaneously in all individual souls. - Above the Intellect is the One, the absolute unity from which all things come. - The One is beyond being and is indescribable. - The three principal levels of reality, in descending order, are the One, the Intellect, and the Soul. - The goal of human life is to return to the One through developing a good moral character, cultivating reason, and experiencing, a mystical unity in which body, soul and intellect are left behind.

Greek philosopher. Title page of a Latin edition of Plotinus's works published in Basel in 1580.
    INTRODUCTION
The leading proponent of Neoplatonism, Plotinus was the last of the great early Greek philosophers. His metaphysic stressed the need to transcend this world, know the Divine Mind, and become reunited with the One. Plotinus's hierarchical system is set forth in his Enneads (253-70), collected by one of his students, Porphyry, at the beginning of the fourth century. Although opposed to the Gnostics and other Christian sects, Plotinus greatly influenced Christian philosophers, notably Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas, and aspects of his philosophy have become incorporated into Catholic theology.
    Biographical Information
Most of what is known about Plotinus comes from a biography written by Porphyry about 301 titled On the Life of Plotinus and the Order of His Books.

" THE SYSTEM OF PLOTINUS " THIS series of articles is intended as a preliminary step for those who aspire to be disciples of the Master Plotinus, to be inspired by his ardent spirit, to share his clear insight and follow in his footsteps to the sublime experience of the finding of his own Soul. " It is the secret of the power of Plotinus .... that in him the mystic's impulse to the finding of his own Soul and the scientific impulse to criticize and understand experience are so completely united. There have been men in whom the power of metaphysical insight was as keen or keener than in Plotinus; there have been men who have lived the life of the mystic as intensely, if not more intensely. But there has perhaps never been another mystic who was so great a metaphysician, nor another metaphysician of equal power who lived so saintly a life with the same intensity." . . . " It is probably no exaggeration to say that as an acute psychological observer Plotinus has no equal in antiquity except his Master, Plato, and that very few modern psychologists have shown so true an eye for the facts of the intimate life of the Soul as either."-(" The Times, Lit. Sup., 27. 2. 1919.) In the " Enneads " of Plotinus, which are his sole literary work and were arranged by Porphyry, no comprehensive outline can be found of his System, hence a beginner may find difficulty at first in apprehending it as a whole. Perhaps the easiest mode of approaching it is to do so by way of the Soul Principle, for the Soul is the centre of our being, and so too is it the central principle in the System of Plotinus.
