Maybe you'd prefer to call them works of philosophy, thinly—very thinly—disguised as fiction. Or perhaps you'd be more accurate to call them memoirs, heavy on recalling some rather abstruse philosophical discussions Robert Maynard Pirsig has had with himself. Or better yet, call the first of the two books Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values a massive bestseller that struck the nascent New Age movement of the 1970s like the clap of a single hand and has infuriated professional writers and philosophers with its continued popularity ever since. Not that Pirsig hasn't also won some mainstream credibility over the years. Recently an international philosophical conference has been held to discuss his Metaphysics of Quality, the philosophical system he introduced in

Lila
Robert Pirsig
Extract from Lila by Robert M. Pirsig Published by Bantam Press – 1991 In Robert Pirsig’s novel, Lila , the main character Phaedrus lives on a boat and is traveling on the Hudson river. He is writing a book and uses a system of index cards to record and organise his ideas. The following extract is from chapter 2. The reason Phaedrus used slips rather than full-sized sheets of paper is that a card-catalog tray full of slips provides a more random access. When information is organized in small chunks that can be accessed and sequenced at random it becomes much more valuable than when you have to take it in serial form. It's better, for example to run a post office where the patrons have numbered boxes and can come in to access these boxes any time they please. It's worse to have them all come in at a certain time, stand in a queue and get their mail from Joe, who has to sort through everything alphabetically each time and who has rheumatism, is going to retire in a few years, and who doesn't care whether they like waiting or not. When any distribution is locked into a rigid sequential format it develops Joes that dictate what new changes will be allowed and what will not, and that rigidity is dead. Some of the slips were actually about this topic: random access and Quality. The two are closely related. Random access is at the essence of organic growth, in which cells, like post-office boxes, are relatively independent. Cities are based on random access. Democracies are founded on it. The free market system, free speech, and the growth of science are all based on it. A library is one of civilization's most powerful tools precisely because of its card-catalog trays. Without the Dewey Decimal System allowing the number of cards in the main catalog to grow or shrink at any point the whole library would soon grow stale and useless and die.

an excerpt from Lila by Robert M. Pirsig
This excerpt is taken from Robert M. Pirsig's second book titled Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals. It continues from his first book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values.
He liked that word 'philosophology.' It was just right. It had a nice dull, cumbersome, superfluous appearance that exactly fitted its subject matter, and he'd been using it for some time now. Philosophology is to philosophy as musicology is to music, or as art history and art appreciation are to art, or as literary criticism is to creative writing. It's a derivative, secondary field, a sometimes parasitic growth that likes to think it controls its host by analyzing and intellectualizing its host's behavior.
Literature people are sometimes puzzled by the hatred many creative writers have for them. Art historians can't understand the venom either. He supposed the same was true with musicologists but he didn't know enough about them. But philosophologists don't have this problem at all because the philosophers who would normally condemn them are a null-class. They don't exist. Philosophologists, calling themselves philosophers, are just about all there are.
You can imagine the ridiculousness of an art historian taking his students to museums, having them write a thesis on some historical or technical aspect of what they see there, and after a few years of this giving them degrees that say they are accomplished artists. They've never held a brush or a mallet and chisel in their hands. All they know is art history.

Arches My perspective of Robert M. Pirsig's Lila
Doug Renselle Robert M. Pirsig's "Lila" is one of the finest and most challenging books in print today. For those of you who have read his, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," (ZMM) and enjoyed the philosophical and mystical challenges there, "Lila" offers even more. I have read "Lila" multiple times. I only recently discovered that lila in Hindu mythology means the never-ending dance of the Divine in an ongoing alternation between the World and the Divine and back again. It is like sacrifice of the Divine to create the World and then sacrifice of the World to create the Divine. Lila is this continual dance. I found that a strong metaphor of the main female character in "Lila" and her relationship to Phaedrus. I am unsure Pirsig intended this metaphor, but I suspect he did. In both ZMM and Lila, Pirsig's prime pursuit is the definition and philosophy of quality. He conjoins the epic struggle of mankind to intuit and rationalize the mind-body, subject-object dichotomies. Note that Pirsig would emphasize intuition here and de-emphasize rational thought. In "Lila" he accomplishes three major feats: 1) a non-dichotomous and holistic view of subject-object, 2) a moral value framework for sentient beings, and 3) rules for static and dynamic balance.

Robert M Pirsig
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is the self-told story of a middle-aged man and his son, Chris, who go on a motorcycling trip, accompanied by an adult couple. They journey from Minnesota to California, taking the back roads and sleeping overnight in motels or camping. The man describes what it is like to hear the wind moving across the plains, to see birds rise up from marshes next to the road, to ride through a ferocious storm, and to breath the fresh air of a mountain above the tree line. He tells also of the people that they meet, the towns they stop in, and the quarrels and conversations of the journey. There is nothing particularly remarkable about the narrator (who is never given a name but assumed to be author Robert Pirsig), who is now a writer of technical manuals living a normal existence. However, with the miles come snatches of memory of having traveled the same roads before, fragments which alert the reader to a deeper story. Along with the record of the trip itself come the narrator's philosophical reflections, which are to slow the reader down to a pace at which important things can be discussed. Fittingly, he has taken Walden with him to read, Thoreau's poetic record of a time spent away from the busyness of normal life.
