By virtue of being a precocious child with an IQ of 170 at age 9, Pirsig skipped several grades. In 1943, Pirsig entered the University of Minnesota to study biochemistry . In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance , he described himself as being far from a typical student. He was an idealist of a sort, interested in science as a goal in itself, rather than as a way to establish a career. While doing biochemical lab work, Pirsig was greatly bothered by the fact that there was always more than one workable hypothesis to explain a given phenomenon, and that the number of such hypotheses seemed almost unlimited. He could not think of any way around this, and to him it seemed that the whole scientific endeavor had been brought to a halt, in some sense. This question so distracted him that he was dismissed from the university for poor grades.

September 6, 1928, witnessed the birth of Robert Maynard Pirsig in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the author of the cult classic, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance . Pirsig's father, Maynard, taught at the University of Minnesota Law School from 1934 until retiring in 1970. He served as Dean from 1948 to 1955. Pirsig's mother, Harriet Marie Pirsig (Sjobeck), is of Swedish origin. By the age of 9, Pirsig, a precocious child, already possessed an I.Q. of 170. He was promoted over several grades, and his lack of normal socialization, combined with a vexing stammer, made childhood difficult for him. In 1943, Pirsig entered the University of Minnesota, where he struggled for the next two years with his classes. He was expelled in 1945 for failing grades, immaturity, and inattention to his studies. After traveling to Montana where he drifted aimlessly for several months, he joined the Army and served in Korea before returning to school, where he resumed his studies, concentrating on chemistry and philosophy. He received a B.A. in 1950 and enrolled in the University's School of Journalism two years later. He also attended Benares Hindu University in India, where he pursued knowledge about Oriental philosophy, although later references to his studies there cast doubt on how much he gained from the experience.

From Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence:
"A motorcycle functions entirely in accordance with the laws of reason, and a study of motorcycle maintenance is really a miniture study of the art of rationality itself." "In all of the Oriental religions, great value is placed on the Sanskrit doctrine of Tat tvam asi , "Thou art that," which asserts that everything you think you are and everything you think you perceive are undivided. To realize fully this lack of division is to become enlightened." "To live only for some future goal is shallow". "We keep passing through little moments of other people's lives." Pirsig was going crazy in his pursuit of defining Quality Talked about dialectics Even mentions Mu a bit. Divides human understanding into two kinds:

back to the bookshelf zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance an inquiry into values robert m. pirsig And what is good, Phædrus, And what is not good... Need we ask anyone to tell us these things? Part I "What!" he hollers. "Blackbird!" He says something I don’t hear."What?" I holler back. He grabs the back of my helmet and hollers up, "I’ve seen lots of those, Dad!" "Oh!" I holler back. Then I nod. At age eleven you don’t get very impressed with red-winged blackbirds. I’ve wondered why it took us so long to catch on. We saw it and yet we didn’t see it. Or rather we were trained not to see it. Conned, perhaps, into thinking that the real action was metropolitan and all this was just boring hinterland. It was a puzzling thing. The truth knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I’m looking for the truth," and so it goes away. Puzzling. But once we caught on, of course, nothing could keep us off these roads, weekends, evenings, vacations. We have become real secondary-road motorcycle buffs and found there are things you learn as you go. The main skill is to keep from getting lost. Since the roads are used only by local people who know them by sight nobody complains if the junctions aren’t posted. And often they aren’t. When they are it’s usually a small sign hiding unobtrusively in the weeds and that’s all. County-road-sign makers seldom tell you twice. If you miss that sign in the weeds that’s your problem, not theirs. Moreover, you discover that the highway maps are often inaccurate about county roads. And from time to time you find your "county road" takes you onto a two-rutter and then a single rutter and then into a pasture and stops, or else it takes you into some farmer’s backyard.

Robert Pirsig What the Metaphysics of Quality would do is take this separate category, Quality, and show how it contains within itself both subjects and objects. The Metaphysics of Quality would show how things become enormously more coherent fabulously more coherent when you start with an assumption that Quality is the primary empirical reality of the world.... ...but showing that, of course, was a very big job.... from Lila
Rumors have been flying around for quite a while that Pirsig committed suicide. He did not. He is currently staying out of the limelight and working on various projects.
