LZ/A/24-1 Being a Humanist — Day and night Kees Waaldijk The humanist went to bed but could not fall asleep easily, as is the case with many humanists nowadays. He was not so much worrying about situations in the world as about his own identity. Who am I, calling myself a humanist? In other words: What does humanism mean in our time? Is humanism a philosophy of life arising from deep respect for human cultural creations? No, that sounds nice, but would be too elitist. What would be the implications of such a definition for millions of good people not sharing or participating in so-called higher cultural creativity? Is humanism – asks our still-awake humanist – the basic world orientation of people shaking off the burden of mythological world-interpretation, of religious authority – Bible, Church and Pope – putting man and human values above all other focus of orientation? No, that sounds very emancipated, but too arrogant towards many concerned and decent believers loving their fellow men. So let us look for the essence of humanism in the inalienable right and capacity of man to develop and actualize himself as an individual. This would at least legitimize humanistic psychology as the most authentic starting point for understanding human behaviour. But here, too, hesitation was felt by our (now almost sleeping) humanist. Individual self-development as the very essence of humanism would imply the cruel negation of the far-reaching delimitation of man by outer and inner circumstances, a delimitation so convincingly described by Marx and Freud.

http://www.crvp.org/book/Series04/IVA-9/chapter_xi.htm
CHAPTER XI THE PHENOMENON OF HUMAN DIGNITY AFTER TOTALITARIANISM MILOSLAV BEDNÁR The appearance of the totalitarian alternative to human existence, so typical for twentieth century, represents a consistent, consciously anti-traditional, and universal alternative to human life and its world. This consists in an elaborate ideological and behavioral embodiment of the essence of technology, i.e., in the comprehensive manipulability of both metal and practical human beings. In other words, totalitarian regimes present a systematic and cogent, but morally weak, reply to the modern split between rationality and morality which is reflected in the sharp division of the private and public spheres of human life. The totalitarian alternative offers an alluringly simple closure of this gap at the heart of modern humanity. In cases where such an answer has been accepted, as with the Communist and Nazi totalitarian regimes, the continuity of the Western tradition as such has been interrupted. The central assault of the totalitarian thrust was aimed at the phenomenon of individual responsibility for one’s private and public life, including its moral and spiritual meaning. Precisely here, totalitarian regimes appeared extremely successful in creating a new type of human which was always ready to comply with any ideological commands for total lack of personal moral responsibility. Instead of a unitive moral orientation, the manifold tints and nuances of totalitarian sophistry succeeded in promoting a universal relativism of values. These crucial elements of the totalitarian mentality and activity now constitute a most sinister flaw impeding the solid recovery of post-communist countries from their long-lasting systematic disregard and elimination of the spiritual and moral foundations of the Occidental human tradition.

PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY
Spring 2007
What is history? Is there a clear distinction between history and fiction? Between history and myth? What justifies a historical interpretation of events? Are historical judgments important in our decision-making? If so, what makes one better than another? How is the concept of history related to the concept of "progress"? Are there objective truths of history? Are there ethical constraints on how we understand history? What are the most powerful theories of history and what are their strengths and weaknesses? In this course we will consider a wide range of ways of thinking about history. We will develop and defend our own conceptions of history. We will become more aware of how "historical" matters matter to us. The course grade will be based on class participation (15%), the Philosophy of History Notebook (35%), a final exam (20%), and a 10-12 pp. study of a conceptual issue (30%). The required books for the course are: Mircea Eliade

[13-03-2007] By Ian Willoughby Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s Tuesday marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Jan Patocka. Patocka is regarded as one of the most important central European philosophers of the 20th century. "In place of the clear and rigid ancient law, You made man decide about good and evil for himself, with no other guidance than Your example." ("The Grand Inquisitor," The Brothers Karamazov , Fyodor Dostoevsky, p. 307) In response to criticisms that deconstruction is ethically "relativist" and "nihilist," Jacques Derrida in his recent book The Gift of Death skeptically questions the very intelligibility of the notion of responsibility (85). Derrida polemically attacks and seeks to undermine what he calls the "good conscience" (85) of modernity, the illusory confidence that we can ever justify our actions rationally. Responsibility, for Derrida, can never actually be responsible, for it preserves "within itself a nucleus of irresponsibility or absolute unconsciousness" (20). Furthermore, any particular instance of responsibility necessarily involves the scandalous "betrayal" and "absolute sacrifice" of all other possible responsibilities (68-69). In the hyperbolic language of deconstruction, the exercise of responsibility is "absolute treachery" (68), an incomprehensible and monstrous "gift of death" (96). Derrida approaches the idea of responsibility historically, proposing nothing less than a history of responsibility and the self from Platonism to Christianity to the modern world. The "irresponsibility" of modernity can be traced to Christianity, specifically, Christianity's unacknowledged and repressed core of the demonic sacred (24-26). Derrida understands Christian responsibility and selfhood as a response to the Christian
