HomePage The State and the Ile-de-France Region are establishing new International Research Chairs to accommodate highly qualified, internationally acclaimed, foreign research scientists in all scientific fields.
Each Chair allows the foreign scientist to be hosted for 12 full months, possibly spread over 2 years , in one or more well-known Higher Learning or Research Institutions in Paris/Ile-de-France that are focused on a particular scientific project and are able to provide the suitable environment, equipment and means required. The global financial amount attributed to each project can go up to which includes among other things, salaries, social charges, taxes, accompanying expenses. The candidates are required to give about ten lectures and a public seminar at the end of the period. A multi-disciplinary jury, in association with the French Institute, will select 5 applicants for based on the scientific interest of the project, on its interdisciplinary characteristic and the quality of the application. The applications must be received before 28 January 2008 . The foreign candidate may be hosted in Ile-de-France as early as September 2008. Applications by female candidates are given encouragement.

    Pascal, Blaise
Pascal, Blaise key , French scientist and religious philosopher. Studying under the direction of his father, a civil servant, Pascal showed great precocity, especially in mathematics and science. Before he was 16 he wrote a paper on conic sections which won the respect of the mathematicians of Paris; at 19 he invented a calculating machine. Credited with founding the modern theory of probability, Pascal also discovered the properties of the cycloid and contributed to the advance of differential calculus. In physics his experiments increased knowledge of atmospheric pressure through barometric measurements and of the equilibrium of fluids (see Pascal's law (1656). Those

By age 10, Pascal was doing original experiments in mathematics and physical science. To help his father, who was a tax collector, he invented the first calculating device (some call it the first "computer"). With this last invention, he had made a name for himself (at age 19!) and began his richly diverse scientific career. He tested the theories of Galileo and Torricelli (who discovered the principles of the barometer), culminating in his famous law of hydraulics, which states that pressure on the surface of a fluid is transmitted equally to every point in a fluid. He added important papers on the vacuum, on the weight and density of air, and the arithmetic triangle. He developed the theory of probability, which is still used today. He invented the syringe, the hydraulic lift, and is credited with inventing the wristwatch and mapping out the first bus route in Paris. It is said Pascal was embarrassed by his multiple talents.

The earliest anecdote of Pascal is one of his being bewitched and freed from the spell by the witch with strange ceremonies. His mother died when he was about four years old, and left him with two sisters Gilberte, who afterwards married M. Perier, and Jacqueline. Both sisters are of importance in their brother's history, and both are said to have been beautiful and accomplished. When Pascal was about seven years old his father gave up his official post at Clermont, and betook himself to Paris. It does not appear that Blaise, who went to no school, but was taught by his father, was at all forced, but rather the contrary. Nevertheless he has a distinguished place in the story of precocious children, and in the much more limited chapter of children whose precocity has been followed by great performance at maturity, though he never became what is called a learned man, perhaps did not know Greek, and was pretty certainly indebted for most of his miscellaneous reading to

Biographies: Historic Figures: Blaise Pascal (1623-1662)
Frenchman Blaise Pascal was a mathematician and physicist as well as a philosopher and theologian. Pascal made contributions both to science, working on the barometer, and an early calculator, and inventing the syringe, and also to mathematics, influencing the development of modern probability theory. He was also an active philanthropist. Pascal gives his name to Pascal’s Wager , a pragmatic rather than an evidential argument for belief in God. The argument presupposes a strong agnosticism, the view that it is impossible to either prove or disprove God’s existence, supported elsewhere by an argument from incomprehensibility . As we are unable to determine by reason whether or not God exists, Pascal argued, we are justified in basing our decision what to believe on self-interest. Self-interest, said Pascal, dictates that we believe in God: If he exists, then it is important that we believe in him, whereas if he does not, then it does not matter whether we believe in him or not. We should therefore play it safe by believing in God and living out a Christian life.

June 19 ~  Heart of Reason Everyday Grace: Having Hope
"It is the heart which experiences G o d and not the r ea s o n ~ Blaise Pascal French scientist and religious philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was born on this day at Clermont-Ferrand, the son of the king's counselor. "I maintain that, if everyone knew what others said about him, there would not be four friends in the world," he once said. At 19, Pascal invented and sold the first digital calculator. Called the Pascaline, it resembled a mechanical calculator of the 1940's. Further studies led to his invention of the barometer, syringe, and hydraulic press. With Fermat he laid the foundation for the theory of probability. After his conversion at age 31, Pascal shared the joy of his Christian belief in some of the most powerful words ever written. His most famous work in philosophy is Pensees , his examination of suffering and faith. Pascal's Wager claims to prove that belief in God is rational. "If God does not exist," he argued, "one will lose nothing by believing in him, while if he does exist, one will lose everything by not believing."

Translation: W.F. Trotter, Introductory Note Blaise Pascal was born at Clermont in Auvergne on June 19, 1623, the son of the president of the Court of Aids of Clermont. He was a precocious child, and soon showed amazing mathematical talent. His early training was scientific rather than literary or theological, and scientific interests predominated during the first period of his activity. He corresponded with the most distinguished scholars of the time, and made important contributions to pure and applied mathematics and to physics. Meantime, an accident had brought the Pascal family into contact with Jansenist doctrine, and Blaise became an ardent convert. Jansenism, which took its name from Jansenius, the bishop of Ypres, had its headquarters in the Cistercian Abbey of Port-Royal, and was one of the most rigorous and lofty developments of post-Reformation Catholicism. In doctrine it somewhat resembled Calvinism in its insistence on Grace and Predestination at the expense of the freedom of the will, and in its cultivation of a thoroughgoing logical method of apologetics. In practise it represented an austere and even ascetic morality, and it did much to raise the ethical and intellectual level of seventeenth century France. Jansenism was attacked as heretical, especially by the Jesuits; and the civil power ultimately took measures to crush the movement, disbanding the nuns of Port-Royal, and by its persecutions affording to many of the Jansenists opportunities for the display of a heroic obstinacy. In this struggle Pascal took an important part by the publication, under the pseudonym of "Louis de Montalte," of a series of eighteen letters, attacking the morality of the Jesuits and defending Jansenism against the charge of heresy. In spite of the fact that the party for which he fought was defeated, in these "Provincial Letters," as they are usually called, Pascal inflicted a blow on the Society of Jesus from which that order has never entirely recovered.

Blaise Pascal
At the age of fourteen, Pascal started to attend Mersenne's meetings. Mersenne belonged to the religious order of the Minims, and his cell in Paris was a frequent meeting place for Fermat, Pascal, Gassendi, and others. By the age of sixteen, Pascal had written his Treatise on Conic Sections , which included his famous theorem of hexagons (Pascal's Theorem), and presented it to Mersenne. Already the young Pascal was on equal footing with some of the great scientific minds of his day. Perhaps the most famous of these religious works is , a collection of personal thoughts on human suffering and faith in God. "Pascal's wager" claims to prove that belief in God is rational with the following argument: "If God does not exist, one will lose nothing by believing in him, while if he does exist, one will lose everything by not believing." Later in his life, additional studies in geometry, hydrodynamics, and hydrostatic and atmospheric pressure led him to invent the syringe and hydraulic press, and to discover Pascal's law of pressure. He worked on conic sections and produced important theorems in projective geometry. In correspondence with Fermat, he helped lay the foundation for the theory of probability. Finally, his last work was on the cycloid, the curve traced by a point on the circumference of a rolling circle.

A trifle consoles us because a trifle upsets us.
Trifles

All human evil comes from a single cause, man's inability to sit still in a room.
Evil
All men naturally hate one another. I hold it a fact, that if men knew exactly what one says of the other, there would not be four friends in the world. Hate All of our reasoning ends in surrender to feeling. Intuition All our dignity lies in our thoughts. Thought All the good maxims which are in the world fail when applied to one's self. Selfishness Amusement allures and deceives us and leads us down imperceptibly in thoughtlessness to the grave. Amusements Brave deeds are wasted when hidden. Bravery By a peculiar prerogative, not only each individual is making daily advances in the sciences, and may make advances in morality (which is the science, by way of eminence, of living well and being happy), but all mankind together are making a continual progress in proportion as the universe grows older; so that the whole human race, during the course of so many ages, may be considered as one man, who never ceases to live and learn. Progress Can anything be more ridiculous than that a man should have the right to kill me because he lives on the other side of the water, and because his ruler has a quarrel with mine.
