The Birth of Tragedy ) (1872), with its distinction between Apollonian and Dionysian cultures. When ill health forced an early end to his teaching career, Nietzsche began to produce the less scholarly, quasi-philosophical, and anti-religious works for which he is now best known, including Menschliches, allzumenschliches Human, All Too Human Also Sprach Zarathustra Thus Spoke Zarathustra The Gay Science ) (1882), and Beyond Good and Evil ) (1886). Nietzsche never recovered from a serious physical and mental collapse he suffered in 1889; his Der Wille zur Macht Will to Power ) (1901) and the autobiographical Ecce Homo Ecce Homo ) (1908) were published posthumously. Nietzsche sharply criticized the Greek tradition's over-emphasis on reason in his Twilight of the Idols Reliance on abstract concepts in a quest for absolute truth, he supposed, is merely a symptom of the degenerate personalities of philosophers like Socrates . From this Nietzsche concluded that traditional philosophy and religion are both erroneous and harmful for human life; they enervate and degrade our native capacity for achievement.

Because Nietzsche had already published some philological articles, he was offered the chair of classical philology at the University of Basel in Switzerland before the doctorate was officially conferred on him.

Friedrich Nietzsche
Friedrich Nietzsche was the son of a Lutheran pastor and a devout hausfrau. His father died - mad - in 1849. Rejecting his father's faith, Nietzsche became a lifelong rebel against Christianity. "In truth, there was only one Christian, and he died on the cross", he wrote in Der Antichrist (1888). Nietzsche was brought up by pious female relatives. He studied classical philology at the universities of Bonn (1864-65) and Leipzig (1864-68) and became, at the age of twenty-five, a professor at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Among his acquaintances was Jakob Burckhardt, the writer of The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1860). During the Franco-Prussian War, Nietzche served briefly as a medical orderly with the Prussian army. Nietzsche's military career was short: he contracted dysentery and diphtheria. In 1872 Nietzsche published his first book

Introduction
It is my opinion that Friedrich Nietzsche and S¸ren Kierkegaard were the first of The Existentialists. Other thinkers, Hegel and Husserl for example, contributed to existentialism but are not existentialists. Nietzsche does mark the outer edge of existentialism, but I consider no other writer as important to the school of thought.

MISSED A PROGRAMME?
Go to the Listen Again page GREATEST PHILOSOPHER Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) Listen to Peter Watson say why you should vote for Friedrich Nietzsche 'The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies but also to hate his friends.' Friedrich Nietzsche's complete rejection of Christianity, with the famous quote "God is dead", led him to be known as a remarkable philosopher in his own right, but also as a progenitor of existentialism. A brilliant young man, he was appointed professor at the University of Basel aged 24 having not even finished his degree. His evanescent philosophical life ended 20 years later when he went insane and died shortly afterwards. Nietzsche's argued that the Christian system of faith and worship was not only incorrect, but harmful to society because it allowed the weak to rule the strong - it suppressed the will to power which was the driving force of human character.

37. Friedrich Nietzsche
Being only a male in the family, friedrich nietzsche was called Fritzchen (Little Fred), adored, petted and worshipped by them.
http://www.csudh.edu/phenom_studies/europ19/lect_8.html
Friedrich Immanuel Nietzsche (October 15, 1844 - August 24, 1900) Life The Origin of Species was published in 1859.) Many argue that as a result, Nietzsche was in care of five female relatives, that would affect his life and even his philosophy. They were his grandmother, his mother , his two aunts and his three years younger sister Elizabeth. Being only a male in the family, Friedrich Nietzsche was called Fritzchen (Little Fred), adored, petted and worshipped by them.
As a school boy, Fritzchen already revealed his intellectual gift. He found boring to play with his neighbors' children and despised them with great disdain. They in turn reciprocated the feeling with him, calling him "der kleine Pfahrer!" (The Tiny Minister). At the age of 15, Friedrich was separated from his female relatives and went to the Lutheran boarding school, which however was located 5 miles away from home. Not only at that time, he already well read, but also he was dreaming of becoming a writer. On Easter, 1861, Friedrich Nietzsche was confirmed at the age of 16. Nevertheless, around the time, Nietzsche started having doubt about the existence of God and soon he gave up the idea of becoming a minister.
At the age of 17 Nietzsche went to University of Bonn, where he enjoyed the free, college students' privileged adolescent life more than anything else with beer, wine, sex and tobacco, etc. He even joined a student corps called the Franconia. It is said at this time he was infected syphilis which affected him in his second half of life. His spending exceeded the money sent from his family and he started getting tired of such hedonistic life anyway and transferred himself to University of Leipzig. In Germany, once you obtained Abitur (the high school diploma), you can study at any of the German Universities you like and you can transfer anywhere.

In it, Nicholson argues that in the history of Western political philosophy, there had been a significant problem: Some of the major contributors to that history had not recognized that the relationship between private and public life was a historically changing relationship.

On the Use and Abuse of History for Life
Foreward
"Incidentally, I despise everything which merely instructs me without increasing or immediately enlivening my activity." These are Goethe's words. With them, as with a heartfelt expression of Ceterum censeo , our consideration of the worth and the worthlessness of history may begin. For this work is to set down why, in the spirit of Goethe's saying, we must in all seriousness despise instruction without vitality, knowledge which enervates activity, and history as an expensive surplus of knowledge and a luxury, because we lack what is still most essential to us and because what is superfluous is hostile to what is essential. To be sure, we need history. But we need it in a manner different from the way in which the spoilt idler in the garden of knowledge uses it, no matter how elegantly he may look down on our coarse and graceless needs and distresses. That is, we need it for life and for action, not for a comfortable turning away from life and from action or for merely glossing over the egotistical life and the cowardly bad act. We wish to use history only insofar as it serves living. But there is a degree of doing history and a valuing of it through which life atrophies and degenerates. To bring this phenomenon to light as a remarkable symptom of our time is now every bit as necessary as it may be painful.
