Leonard Nelson (1882-1927) Leonard Nelson, described by Karl Popper as an "outstanding personality," produced a great quantity of work (collected in the nine volumes of the Gesammelte Schriften ) in a tragically short life. The quantity and the tragedy may have both happened because Nelson was an insomniac who worked day and night and exhausted himself into a fatal case of pneumonia. Nelson's greatest contributions to philosophy were his rediscovery of Jakob Fries , his exposition, systematization, and expansion of Friesian philosophy, the use and theory of Socratic Method in his pedagogy, and his engagement with the mathematical issues of Kantian philosophy in relation to his personal and professional involvement with one of the great mathematicians of the Twentieth Century, David Hilbert (1862-1943) . Hilbert's concern with the axiomatization of geometry and all of mathematics strongly paralleled Nelson's work in the Friesian theories of truth and justification . Nelson recognized the important parallel between Hilbert's conception of meta-mathematics and Fries' distinction between critique and metaphysics Hilbert is now often overshadowed by later mathematicians; and Hilbert's desire to complete mathematics by reducing it to a finished and closed axiomatic system is now often only mentioned in the context that this was shown to be impossible by

His philosophical work addressed two main problems: the laying of a scientific foundation for philosophy and the systematic development of philosophical ethics and a "philosophy of right." He wanted to found a system of philosophy based on rigorous reasoning that would answer Kant's basic questions of existence. what can we know? (theoretical), what ought we to do ? (practical), what may we hope? (judicial) He had two main influences. Firstly , Jakob Fries a specialist in Kantian ethics and secondly David Hilbert (1862-1943) a proponent of Kantian mathematics and one of the great mathematicians of the twentieth Century. Nelson received his first degree in Berlin, but his controversial views on the "philosophy of right" made him unpopular with the Philosophical Faculty at Gottingen where he studied for his doctorate and in particular incurred the dislike of Husserl, the phenomenologist. Leonard was one of the first people to use chemistry to understand biology. He was also a musical artist of great distinction who had performed as a soloist with the Chicago, Cleveland and St Louis symphony orchestras. At the time of Leonard's election (1955) as a member of the US National Academy of Science, it was open to him to continue his career as an academic or opt for one as a professional bass- baritone. ELDERFIELD WAS an organic chemist who achieved considerable success in applying his research to areas of medicine. While at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, he established the fundamental relationship between the cardiac aglycones and the sterols and bile acids. He determined the stereochemical structures of the rare sugar components of the related glycosides. Together with his students at Columbia University and later at the University of Michigan, he worked on alkaloids, provided the best synthetic routes to the effective antimalarial pamaquine, examined a new category of anionic substitution reactions, and contributed to our array of anticancer agents. His breadth of research contributions was complemented by his enthusiastic and innovative teaching and by his writing. He was editor and author of the nine-volume definitive treatise Heterocyclic Compounds At Williams, Robert majored in chemistry and qualified for a second major in German, which gave him a great deal of satisfaction. During his senior year at Williams, he was a teaching assistant in the freshman chemistry laboratory. He received the A.B. degree in 1926. There was never a doubt that he would enter the chemical profession. During his formative years, he came in contact with many technically trained individuals who were connected with the chemical industry that was then concentrated in the Niagara Falls region. During the summers between his college years at Williams, he worked in chemical plants in Niagara Falls. The experience thus gained strengthened his desire to pursue a career in chemistry.

Leonard, who went from developing antimalarial drugs in World War II to decades of research in bioorganic chemistry, the chemistry of living things, died on Monday at his home in Pasadena, Calif. He was 90. Dr. Leonard, who retired from the University of Illinois in 1986, had been a faculty associate at the California Institute of Technology since 1992. In more than 40 years at Illinois, he applied organic synthesis to solving important problems in chemistry, biochemistry and plant physiology. Dr. Leonard was born in Newark. He graduated from Lehigh University and went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar until World War II began. Dr. Leonard earned his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1942 with work on a naturally occurring antimalarial compound that brought him to the attention of military authorities. After joining the Illinois faculty in 1943, he became part of a team researching the synthesis and production of chloroquine, the antimalarial drug, in time for use in the Pacific theater of the war.
