Leonard for the Noyes Laboratory Centennial Celebration on September 13, 2002 In autumn of 1907, William Albert Noyes Journal, Chemical Abstracts, Chemical Monographs, and Chemical Reviews William Albert Noyes I do not go back that far, but sometime after I had come to Urbana, Illinois, unauspiciously in 1942, I was assigned space in the prior office/laboratory of W. A. Noyes in the northwest corner of the first floor. His samples of camphor and camphoric acid were still there in the cupboard under the hood. His widow, his third wife, still lived in the family house at 1105 Nevada Street, and that is where Lennie Miller and his beginning family first lived as renter-custodians. Professor Fuson got along with W. A. Noyes, he said, by willingly, or perhaps blindly, signing the many petitions that were thrust in front of him. As I said, W. A. Noyes was an internationalist; he was also a "mover," and he was blind to color. He knew the American chemical scene very well.

His work has answered questions of fundamental importance to biochemistry and life processes. Leonard invented fluorescent probes and dimensional probes of enzyme-coenzyme binding sites and DNA double-helical cross sections. Leonard has been very active in IUPAC. He served on the Editorial Advisory Board of IUPAC from 1984-1991 and he was President of the Organic Chemistry Division of IUPAC from 1991-1993. Germany in 1945 (courtesy of N. Leonard). Leonard's father was a salesman in New York and his mother was a housewife. As a child, he had his own chemistry set and in high school he had a good chemistry teacher. Following his career at Urbana- Champaign, he started a second career at Cal Tech where he first went as a Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar in the fall of 1991. While at Cal Tech he has written review articles based upon some of his earlier discoveries, such as fluorescent derivations of ATP and related compounds. Corey PRIESTLEY MEDAL ADDRESS You will understand the title at one level by knowing that I have been a fan of the Boston Red Sox for about 70 years. This loyalty was partially rewarded about 17 years ago when by chance I had the pleasure of spending an hour with my boyhood hero, Ted Williams. At about the time that I started to follow the Red Sox games by radio, I acquired the notion that I would like someday to know in detail how to build from scratch radios, planes, skyscrapers, bridges, and all the other objects of modern life. I sometimes wonder, in retrospect, whether this impossible dream somehow had an influence on the course of my life. I had no idea that I would choose chemistry as a profession when I entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a 16-year-old freshman in June of 1945. In fact, until my senior year in high school, the only science that I had ever taken in school was mathematics. I enjoyed math more than any other subject, although I liked all of my studies. My preference for math led to my being handed a two-page application form for MIT, which I completed in less than an hour and returned to my high school adviser, Mr. O'Brien. A few weeks later, I learned that I had been admitted to MIT. Mr. O'Brien's advice was that I should consider majoring in electrical or chemical engineering at MIT because the chances of finding good employment in math were low. I eventually found my way into chemistry in my sophomore year at MIT because it was more interesting to me than the engineering options. My hope was that I might find work as a scientist with a large corporation after graduation from college. I never dreamed that in the short space of about five years I would have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry and a faculty position at the University of Illinois.
