ETHICS
John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873): Utilitarianism
by Gordon L. Ziniewicz
1. The ultimate good (end or purpose) of human life is happiness , not simply of a single individual in isolation from others, but of all individuals together (greatest happiness of the greatest number of individuals Greatest Happiness Principle). 2. "Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness." What makes an act right or wrong is its consequences , how it affects individuals, whether it causes them pleasure or pain . "By happiness is intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, and the privation of pleasure." 3. Some pleasures, particularly pleasures of the mind (knowledge and imagination) and pleasures associated with virtue, are better than other pleasures, those associated with the "animal appetites." "It is quite compatible with the principle of utility to recognize the fact that some kinds of pleasure are more desirable and more valuable than others." [Epicurus understood that mental pleasures are better than bodily pleasures and that quality of pleasure is more important than quantity.] Higher pleasures correspond to the exercise of higher human faculties or capacities (as opposed to animal sensations). [Mill implies that these "higher capacities" can be cultivated or developed through education or "nurture."]

    Mill, John Stuart
Mill, John Stuart, , British philosopher and economist. A precocious child, he was educated privately by his father, James Mill. In 1823, abandoning the study of law, he became a clerk in the East India company, where he rose to become head of the examiner's office by the time of the company's dissolution (1858). During this period he contributed to various periodicals and met with discussion groups, one of which included Thomas Macaulay, to explore the problems of political theory. His A System of Logic (1843) was followed in 1848 by the Principles of Political Economy

See also Thematic Essay: British Political and Social Thought Mill was born in London on May 20, 1806. He was given an unusually early and extensive education by his father, James Mill , beginning the study of Greek at the age of three. At the age of 17 he had completed advanced and thorough courses of study in Greek literature and philosophy, chemistry, botany, psychology, and law. In 1822 Mill began to work as a clerk for his father in the examiner’s office of the India House, and six years later he was promoted to the post of assistant examiner. PAGE 7 of the 1904 edition "NATURE," "natural," and the group of words derived from them, or allied to them in etymology, have at all times filled a great place in the thoughts and taken a strong hold on the feelings of mankind. That they should have done so is not surprising when we consider what the words, in their primitive and most obvious signification, represent; but it is unfortunate that a set of terms which play so great a part in moral and metaphysical speculation should have acquired many meanings different from the primary one, yet sufficiently allied to it to admit of confusion. The words have thus become entangled in so many foreign associations, mostly of a very powerful and tenacious character, that they have come to excite, and to be the symbols of, feelings which their original meaning will by no means justify, and which have made them one of the most copious sources of false taste, false philosophy, false morality, and even bad law. The most important application of the Socratic Elenchus, as exhibited and improved by Plato, consists in dissecting large abstractions of this description; fixing down to a precise definition the meaning which as popularly used they merely shadow forth, and questioning and testing the common maxims and opinions in which they bear a part. It is to be regretted that among the instructive specimens of this kind of investigation which Plato has left, and to which subsequent times have been so much indebted for whatever intellectual clearness they have attained, he has not enriched posterity with a dialogue
