Maurice Merleau-Ponty
First published Mon 14 Jun, 2004 Born in 1908, Merleau-Ponty died in 1961 at the age of 53. This essay will follow the basic contours of his thought, beginning with the first published work, The Structure of Behavior (SB), followed by the Phenomenology of Perception (PP), and concluding with the posthumously published The Visible and the Invisible (VI). It will include only brief excursions into his writings on politics and art. Although I have no interest in dividing his oeuvre into three distinct periods, nonetheless, each of these works marks a stage in the philosophical itinerary of his thought, culminating with an ontology of the flesh elaborated in his later thought.

Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961)
Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s work is commonly associated with the philosophical movement called existentialism and its intention to begin with an analysis of the concrete experiences, perceptions, and difficulties, of human existence. However, he never propounded quite the same extreme accounts of radical freedom, being-towards-death, anguished responsibility, and conflicting relations with others, for which existentialism became both famous and notorious in the 1940s and 1950s. Perhaps because of this, he did not initially receive the same amount of attention as his French contemporaries and friends, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir . These days though, his phenomenological analyses are arguably being given more attention than either, in both France and in the Anglo-American context, because they retain an ongoing relevance in fields as diverse as cognitive science, medical ethics, ecology, sociology and psychology. Although it is difficult to summarize Merleau-Ponty’s work into neat propositions, we can say that he sought to develop a radical re-description of embodied experience (with a primacy given to studies of perception), and argued that these phenomena could not be suitably understood by the philosophical tradition because of its tendency to drift between two flawed and equally unsatisfactory alternatives: empiricism and, what he called, intellectualism. This article will seek to explain his understanding of perception, bodily movement, habit, ambiguity, and relations with others, as they were expressed in his key early work

Merleau-Ponty's Ontology
Studies in Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy by M. C. Dillon Originally published in 1988, M. C. Dillon's classic study of Merleau-Ponty is now available in a revised second edition containing a new preface and a new chapter on "Truth in Art." Dillon's general thesis is that Merleau-Ponty has developed the first genuine alternative to ontological dualism seen in Western philosophy. From his early work on the philosophical significance of the human body to his later ontology of flesh, Merleau-Ponty shows that the perennial problems growing out of dualistic conceptions of mind and body, subject and object, immanence and transcendence can be resolved within the framework of a new way of thinking based on the exemplar of the worldly embodiment of thought.. Biography
Maurice Merleau-Ponty La Structure du Comportement (1942) and his the Structure of Behavior and the Phenomenology of Perception Merleai-Ponty served in the infantry when in World War II broke out. He began collaborating with his friend and co-founding editor of Les Temps Modernes, Jean-Paul Sartre from 1945 to 1952. However, he became disillusioned with the Korean War, and Sartrian politics, and decided to resign from the editorial board of what would soon become Sartre's journal. The nature of Merleau-Ponty's disagreements with Sartre are formulated in the Adventures of the Dialectic, published in 1955. It is an exhaustive analysis of Sartre's relationship to communism, criticizing his privileging of the subject-object relations in his version of phenomenology. Merleau-Ponty was greatly influenced by Husserl, and in his own work he attempted to refute the tendencies in Western philosophy of empiricism and what he called intellectualism, or what is commonly referred to as idealism. He challenged the thinking of dualisms, of subject and object, self and world, through the lived experience of the existential body, as revealed in his ( The Phenomenology of Perception ). He argued that the 'body subject' was frequently underestimated in philosophy, which tends to view the body as something to be transcended by the power of the mind. For this reason, he was interested in the 'primacy of perception', as a place of embodied inherence in the world, while admitting that perception itself is primarily cognitive. His opposition to the knowledge of scientific and analytic methods was based on their derivative relation to knowledge as compared to the practical thinking of an embodied relation to the world.

French philosopher, one of the most significant contributors to phenomenology after Edmund Husserl . He attempted to move beyond the notion of a pure experiencing consciousness, arguing in The Phenomenology of Perception (1945) that perception is intertwined with bodily awareness and with language. In his posthumously published work The Visible and the Invisible (1964), he argued that our experience is inherently ambiguous and elusive and that the traditional concepts of philosophy are therefore inadequate to grasp it. hut(1)

At the same time, he shared many of the same concerns as Sartre - but Merleau-Ponty was not an existentialist. Maurice Merleau-Ponty
Gwen Hartman Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1902-1961) was a Frech existentialist who attempts to explain the mind body relationship and neither completely holistic or dualistic. Merleau-Ponty believed that the "lived body" was not that much different than the consciousness, hence man is characterized as an embodied consciousness. He states that the body is who he is, "being a body".
Merleau-Ponty's views are important in the study of kinesiology for our understanding of what physical activity means to us. The two common views that exist seem to be an eastern view of holism (a unity of mind and body), where physical activity is for growth of the whole being, and the other is dualism (proposing a separation of the mind and body), which in the westernized society physical activity would be to manifest the power and idolization of the body. Merleau-Ponty's attempts to describe the body as a way of knowing ourselves through the world, through the "lived situation". Physical activity would then become a way of learning about yourself, your body and your mind.
