Where these reduced (operational - E.W.) concepts govern the analysis of the human reality, individual or social, mental or material, they arrive at a false concreteness - a concreteness isolated from the conditions which constitute its reality. In this context, the operational treatment of the concept assumes a political function. The individual and his behavior are analyzed in a therapeutic sense - adjustment to his society. Thought and expression, theory and practice are to be brought in line with the facts of his existence without leaving room for the conceptual critique of these facts.

Although the writings contained in this volume are of varied interest to either general readers or specialists, they are a splendid beginning to a series that (hopefully) promises a renewed and revitalized interest in and consideration of one of the most significant representatives of critical theory. The publication of these planned six volumes may also challenge political intellectuals and activists to reconsider their theories and praxes, allowing a more considered differentiation between genuine social theory and meaningless consumerist academic fashion that is long overdue.

Herbert Marcuse biography
Biography of Herbert Marcuse with an outline of One Dimensional Man.
Herbert Marcuse was born in 1898 in Berlin, Germany. His parents were Jews and moderately wealthy. During WWI, Marcuse worked for the German army. He did not fight in battle, but worked on stable maintenance. His role was not exactly that of the typical soldier; instead, he fed and groomed the horses that would be used in the battles. Like many Germans, he was not happy with the war. Marcuse eventually aided the spontaneous 1918 Revolution that ended WWI. The 1918 Revolution disposed of the German Kaiser and attempted to establish a republican system of government. Like many people, Marcuse joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). This political party presented the most orthodox interpretation of Marx's theories and hoped to authorize them into the German government. When the SPD aided the murders of the Spartacist League, Marcuse left the group in political protest. He refused to organize with any political organization after that, but he continued to defend Marxist analysis. From 1919 to 1922, Marcuse studied philosophy, literature, and economics at the universities of Freiberg and Berlin. At the same time, he maintained a small book store and wrote philosophical works on Marxism. In 1929, Marcuse went to Freiberg to study philosophy with Husserl and Heidegger. Marcuse never finished his doctoral presentation due to Heidegger's association with the Nazi party. Noting Heidegger's emerging anti-semitism, Husserl refered Marcuse to the "Institut f¼r Sozialforschung". This group worked with universities in Geneva and the United States.

Herbert Marcuse and Marxism
By Robert Langston The 70 year-old philosopher Herbert Marcuse has passed through three more or less distinct stages in his intellectual development. His earliest works, such as his 1932 essay on the then recently discovered Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of the young Marx show the overpowering influence of his teacher, the German existentialist philosopher Martin Heidegger. During the years of exile from Nazi Germany - the 1930s - Marcuse gradually liberated himself from Heidegger's sway and moved closer to orthodox Marxism, albeit a Marxism with a strong Hegelian bent. This phase culminated in Reason and Revolution (1941), Marcuse's finest work and possibly the best book on Hegel yet written in English. Here Marcuse sees in the industrial working class the world-transforming "force of negativity". His current phase - when Marcuse wrote the works which are most influential among young radicals today - is marked by two principal features. There is a growing concern with the possibilities of man as they might be realised in a genuinely human society. This is the central theme of

http://www.autodidactproject.org/my/marcuse1.html
Notes on Herbert Marcuse’s Reason and Revolution by Ralph Dumain I came across an essay by Marcuse in The Essential Frankfurt School Reader : "On Science and Phenomenology."  I found this essay rather unsatisfactory; it reads like a luftmensch take on the world.  The main fault lies with Husserl himself.  Marcuse's essay is basically a review of Husserl's The Crisis of European Science and Transcendental Phenomenology (Written 9 April 2003) Reason and Revolution : Hegel I have read the first five chapters of Marcuse's Reason and Revolution: Hegel and the Rise of Social Theory (Written 31 July 2003) Marx on Alienated Labor 1844 Manuscripts Karl Marx In His Earlier Writings Marcuse must have made quite a splash in 1941.  It's certainly likely that he provided a major impetus to C.L.R. James's tendency to study Hegel and Marx and to translate some of the 1844 Manuscripts into English (they were the first) and to make the labor process the fundament of their tendency. (Written 2 August 2003) I am reading the section on the foundations of positivism and beginning the section on Saint-Simon.  There are some noteworthy tidbits in the section on positive and negative philosophy.   First, Schelling's positivist element.  Positive philosophy as a conscious reaction against the critical negativity of rationalism is something I don't know much about, and therefore doubly noteworthy.  The two-fold thrust of post-Hegelian, positive philosophy was to counter negativity and analyze society in terms of natural law.  The common feature of positive philosophy and contemporary positivism, aside from the opposition to a priori metaphysics, is the elevation of fact and experience to the ultimate.  This was a product of the new scientific temper and reflects the universal application of scientific method, based on observation alone.
