Herbert Marcuse
Until 1933 Marcuse was part of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, known as the 'Frankfurt School'. When the Nazis came to power he emigrated to America, where he has remained. In 1955 he published Eros and Civilization The counterculture revolution of the 1960s was based in large part on the ideas of three members of the Frankfurt SchoolHerbert Marcuse, Eric Fromm and Theodor Adorno. Marcuse became an outspoken critic of the Vietnam war and coined the anthemic phrase of the era, 'Make love, not war'. Around the same time Marcuse's ideas were influential to early feminist debates. In 1972 Marcuse's book One-Dimensional Man presented a pessimistic view of the forces of the mass media, recognising that the mass media define how we think about the world. The essence of his ideas is that the irresistible output of the entertainment and information industry carry with them prescribed attitudes and habits, certain intellectual and emotional reactions which bind the consumers to the producers and, through the latter to the whole social system. As a result the products indoctrinate and manipulate; they promote a false consciousness which is immune against alternative interpretations. This creates a pattern of one-dimensional thought and behaviour.

    HERBERT MARCUSE
    By Douglas Kellner
Herbert Marcuse gained world renown during the 1960s as a philosopher, social theorist, and political activist, celebrated in the media as "father of the New Left." University professor and author of many books and articles, Marcuse won notoriety when he was perceived as both an influence on and defender of the "New Left" in the United States and Europe. His theory of "one-dimensional" society provided critical perspectives on contemporary capitalist and state communist societies and his notion of "the great refusal" won him renown as a theorist of revolutionary change and "liberation from the affluent society." Consequently, he became one of the most influential intellectuals in the United States during the 1960s and into the 1970s. And yet, ultimately, it may be his contributions to philosophy that are most significant and in this entry I shall attempt to specify Marcuse's contributions to contemporary philosophy and his place in the narrative of continental philosophy.

One-Dimensional Man One-Dimensional Man was written in 1964 and can be seen as an analysis of highly developed societies. In it, Marcuse criticizes both communist and capitalist countries for their lack of true democratic processes. Neither type of society creates equal circumstances for its citizens. Marcuse discusses the factors which inhibit criticism and analysis of society. He draws on Marx primarily because his analysis focuses on how the economy limits potential of people. Marcuse's analysis of highly advanced societies is accurate and useful. However, he does not provide realistic solutions to the problems he raises. His point seems to be that if societies can learn to use technologies in ways that benefit citizens, instead of restricting them, then the problems of humans will be solved.

    Biography
Herbert Marcuse Herbert Marcuse was born in Berlin on July 19,1898. In 1922 he received his Ph. D. from the University of Freiburg. While a student, he became a member of the Social Democratic Party. He worked as a bookseller in Berlin after completing his studies, and he published his first article in 1928. At this time he was attempting to form a synthesis in his work of phenomenology, existentialism and Marxim, an approach which would be continued by thinkers such as Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. In 1929 Marcuse returned to Freiburg to write his habilitation entitled Hegel's Ontology and the Theory of Historicity under the guidance of Martin Heidegger. Marcuse co-founded the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research with Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer. The members of the Institute have been credited for the development of a model of Critical Theory, a type of Marxism influenced by psychoanalysis and existentialism, and their influential aesthetic theories and critiques of capitalist culture. Among the projects of the Institute is a theory of the contemporary condition of state and monopoly capitalism, and an analysis and critique of German fascism. Marcuse was involved in the Institute's many interdisciplinary projects, identifying in particular with critical social theory, and maintained a close relationship to the other members of the Institute throughout his life.
