INTRODUCTION
Nicolo Machiavelli was one of the most influencial people of the Renaissance.
BACKGROUND
Machiavelli lived from 1469-1527 and was born in Florence, Italy. As well as an Italian statesman, and a Florentine patriot, he was the head of the Second Chancery at the age of twenty-nine. Nicolo was a senior civil servant but when the republic was overthrown, he was imprisoned and tortured. Machiavelli was released in 1513 and retired to work on his major writings. He had a preoccupation with military affairs.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Machiavelli carried out diplomatic missions in France, Germany, and Italy. He was a political philospher. Machiavelli wrote books that were like handbooks for rulers. His most famous book was Il Principe The Prince ) which was concerned with one ruler who governs a mass of subjects. In this book his philosophy was that a state should be unified, orderly, and in balance; that people should be happy, honorable, secure, and strong; that rulers should do whatever they needed to enforce order. He wrote methods of how a ruler could gain power. Machiavelli was also a political and military theorist, a playwright, a diplomat, a military planner, and wrote many books and poems. Among his writings are

INTRODUCTION
NICOLO MACHIAVELLI was born at Florence on May 3, 1469. He was the second son of Bernardo di Nicolo Machiavelli, a lawyer of some repute, and of Bartolommea di Stefano Nelli, his wife. Both parents were members of the old Florentine nobility. His life falls naturally into three periods, each of which constitutes a distinct and important era in the history of Florence. His youth was concurrent with the greatness of Florence as an Italian power under the guidance of Lorenzo de' Medici, Il Magnifico. The downfall of the Medici in Florence occurred in 1494, the year Machiavelli entered the public service. During his official career Florence was free, under the government of a Republic, which lasted until 1512. Then the Medici returned to power, and Machiavelli lost his office. The Medici again ruled Florence from 1512 until 1527, when they were once more driven out. This was the period of Machiavelli's literary activity and increasing influence; but he died, within a few weeks of the expulsion of the Medici, on June 22, 1527, in his fifty-eighth year, without having regained office.
YOUTH
Age 1-25: 1469 - 1494 Although there are few records of the youth of Machiavelli, the Florence of those days is so well known that the early environment of this representative citizen may be easily imagined. Florence has been described as a city with two opposite currents of life, one directed by the fervent and austere Savonarola, the other by the splendour-loving Lorenzo. Savonarola's influence upon the young Machiavelli must have been slight, for although at one time he wielded immense power over Florence, he only furnished Machiavelli with a subject for a gibe in

"They were freer than their forefathers in dress and living, and spent more in other kinds of excesses, consuming their time and money in idleness, gaming, and women; their chief aim was to appear well dressed and to speak with wit and acuteness, whilst he who could wound others the most cleverly was thought the wisest." - Machiavelli When Medici returned, Machiavelli was accused of conspiracy against him. He was imprisoned and tortured till the new Medici pontiff, Pope Leo X, secured his release. It was then he turned to literature. His most famous work, Il Principe (The Prince) was written to try and improve the conditions in Italy. In 1520 he was commissioned to write the History of Florence at the request of Cardinal de Medici. This work took five years before completion. It was this work he took to Rome to present to Pope Clement VII (Giulio de' Medici). When the Medici family was against ousted from power, Machiavelli returned to Florence to try to regain his former office of secretary to the "Ten of Liberty and Peace". It was on this quest that he died after illness. Today the term "Machiavellianism" is seen to represent narrow self-interested behavior by interest groups. Machiavelli died, in Florence on June 22, 1527, and was buried in Santa Croce.

His family is said to have been descended from the old marquesses of Tuscany , and to have given Florence thirteen gonfaloniers of justice . His father, Bernardo, was a lawyer, and acted as treasurer of the Marches, but was far from wealthy know that he was a pupil of Marcello Virgilio. In 1498 he was elected secretary of the Lower Chancery of the Signory, and in later years he held the same post under the Ten. Thus it chanced that for fourteen years he had charge of the home and foreign correspondence of the republic, the registration of trials, the keeping of the minutes of the councils, and the drafting of agreements with other states. Moreover he was sent in various capacities to one or other locality within the State of Tuscany , and on twenty-three occasions he acted as legate on important embassies to foreign princes, e.g. to Catherine Sforza (1499), to France (1500, 1510, 1511), to the emperor (1507, 1509), to Rome Perugia , to the Petrucci at Siena , and to Piombino. On these embassies he gave evidence of wonderful keenness of observation and insight into the hidden thoughts of the men he was dealing with, rather than of any great diplomatic skill. "One change l e a v e s the way o p e n for the introduction of o t h e r s ~ Niccolo Machiavelli Born on this day, Italian philosopher Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469-1527) is best known for writing The Prince (1513), a guide on how to rule a nation. The Renaissance advice on power and control , the infamous "end justifies the means" philosophy , inspired leaders from Napoleon to Hitler to Kissinger. "It is much safer for a prince to be feared than loved," Machiavelli said. A minister in the overthrown Florentine Government, Machiavelli faced a republic of corruption and greed. Forced out of office by the new regime, he wrote to offer Lorenzo de' Medici, the new ruler, advice on how to stay in power What makes a good prince, is not necessarily what makes a good human being Politics have no relation to morals," he said. While the political writers of the Middle Ages looked at politics idealistically, within the framework of religion, Machiavelli sought realism and observed human nature and the innate evil of men. The first person to study objectivity, he concluded, "It is better to be feared than loved , more prudent to be cruel."

SEE THE LITERARY WORK BY MACHIAVELLI, NICOLO Machiavelli, Nicolo (1469 - 1527) Nicolo Machiavelli, the first great political philosopher of the Renaissance, was born in Florence, Italy at a time when the country was in political upheaval. Since 1434 Florence was ruled by the wealthy Medici family. Their rule was temporarily interrupted by a reform movement, begun in 1494, in which the young Machiavelli became an important diplomat. When the Medici family regained power in 1512 with the help of Spanish troops, Machiavelli was tortured and removed from public life. For the next 10 years, he devoted himself to writing history, political philosophy, and even plays. He ultimately gained favor with the Medici family and was called back to public duty for the last two years of his life. Machiavelli's greatest work, written in 1513 and published after his death in 1532, is
