Emmanuel Levinas "My effort consists in showing that knowledge is in reality an immanence, and that there is no rupture of the isolation of being in knowledge; and on the other hand, that in communication of knowledge one is found beside the Other, not confronted with him, not in the rectitude of the in-front-of-him. But being in direct relation with the Other is not to thematize the Other and consider him in the same manner as one considers a known object, nor to communicate a knowledge to him. In reality, the fact of being is what is most private; existence is the sole thing I cannot communicate; I can tell about it, but I cannot share my existence. Solitude thus appears as the isolation which marks the very event of being. The social is beyond ontology."
"...I am responsible for the Other without waiting for reciprocity, were I to die for it. Reciprocity is his affair. It is precisely insofar as the relation between the Other and me is not reciporcal that I am subjection to the Other; and I am "subject" essentially in this sense. It is I who support all...The I always has one responsibility more than all the others."

Abstract
It will be argued, contrary to Leibniz and Levinas, that we must not "abandon the world to useless suffering", but rather "accept" the world of evil although struggling and fighting every step of the way. It is this frank acknowledgement of the overwhelming weight of the human condition that gives to this struggle its heroic, mythic qualities.

BIOGRAPHY Levinas, Emmanuel (1906-1995), philosopher and Talmudic commentator, born in Kaunas, Lithuania, naturalized French in 1930.
In 1923, he began to study philosophy at Strasbourg University, where he came into contact with Charles Blondel, Maurice Halbwachs, Maurice Pradines and Henri Carteron. It was also during these student years that Levinas began his lifelong friendship with Maurice Blanchot. In 1928, he went to Freiburg University to pursue studies in phenomenology under Edmund Husserl. At Freiburg he also encountered Martin Heidegger, whose Being and Time (1927) was to have a profound and lasting influence on his thought. Levinas’s debt to both masters was evident in his first three major publications: The Theory of Intuition in Husserl’s Phenomenology Existence and Existents (1947), and

Death and Responsibility : The 'Work' of Levinas
(Suny Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy) by Dennis King Keenan. The work of Levinas has, for the most part, been too easily read. Levinas's use of words like "responsibility" and "God" gives some readers reason to dismiss his work as insufficiently attentive to the whispered suspicions of our times, while giving others reason to accept his work as a clarion call guiding them out of this wilderness of disorienting whispers. Richly informed by readings of Heidegger, Derrida, and Blanchot, Keenan argues that the notion of responsibility at the heart of Levinas's notion of ethics is intimately dependent upon his account of death... Emmanuel Levinas
First published Sun Jul 23, 2006; substantive revision Sun Mar 18, 2007 It is an interpretive, phenomenological description of the rise and repetition of the face-to-face encounter, or the intersubjective relation at its precognitive core; viz., being called by another and responding to that other. If precognitive experience, that is, human sensibility, can be characterized conceptually, then it must be described in what is most characteristic to it: a continuum of sensibility and affectivity, in other words, sentience and emotion in their interconnection. This entry will focus on Levinas's philosophy , rather than his Talmudic lessons (see the bibliography) and his essays on Judaism (notably, Difficult Freedom Essays on Judaism , 1963). Levinas's philosophical project can be called constructivist. He proposes phenomenological description and a hermeneutics of lived experience in the world. He lays bare levels of experience described neither by Husserl nor by Heidegger. These layers of experience concern the encounter with the world, with the human other, and a reconstruction of a layered interiority characterized by sensibility and affectivity.

Biography
Emmanuel Levinas Emmanuel Levinas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania in 1906. His parents were Jewish, and in his youth, Levinas read the Bible in Hebrew. Russian was the language of his early education, though he was also fluent in German. His studies in philosophy began in 1923 in Strasbourg, where he met Charles Blondel, and his life-long companion Maurice Blanchot. Levinas attended Husserl's final lectures of 1928-9, and became influenced by Husserl's Logical Investigations , though he quickly became a follower of Heidegger's Being and Time , which was to have a profound effect on his thinking. Both Husserl and Heidegger can be seen to have influenced Levinas' first three major publications: Theorie de l'intuition dans la phenomenologie de Husserl The Theory of Intuition in Husserl's Phenomenology Existence and Existents (1947), and (1949). Furthermore, Levinas became influential in France for his translations of Husserl and Heidegger into French. otherwise than Being.

I
Without a doubt, Levinas' principal concern in philosophy is how the self meets the Other. His magnum opus, Totality and Infinity , bears the subtitle, An Essay on Exteriority . Exteriority refers to a region beyond the horizons of the self, that which "is" beyond transcendental subjectivity. If there are such "beings" as other selves, that is, other subjects, they exist out there in the exterior. But if knowledge is confined to the interior as Levinas says it must be then the Other cannot be known. He writes, "There is in knowledge, in the final account, an impossibility of escaping the self; hence sociality cannot have the same structure as knowledge" (EI 60). This view that limits knowledge to the interior of conscious life rests on epistemological discoveries made by Descartes, Kant, and those that follow in their tradition. Ideas are always my ideas. They are alleged interpretations of my perceptions. But, these perceptions are also ideas, hence interpretations. What it is, then, that representations (perceptual or conceptual) re-present becomes a philosophical question along with others. Does knowledge refer at all to any extra-mental domain? If so, then how does it refer? If it turns out that knowledge is limited to the interior, then are there other subjects who represent the world as I do? If there are, then how can we know this fact?
