Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz
Though his contributions to computer science predate our current notion of a computer by nearly three hundred years, some claim Leibniz to have been the first computer scientist and information theorist. A history department on Ltu should in my opinion pay homage to such a character of fame, hence a link to a beautiful site dedicated to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz By Niels Hoogeveen History other blogs

Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Gottfried Wilhelm (1646-1716), German philosopher, mathematician, and statesman, regarded as one of the supreme intellects of the 17th century. Leibniz was born in Leipzig. After completing his education at the Universities of Leipzig, Jena, and Altdorf, he served in legal, political, and diplomatic capacities for the elector of Mainz. After three years studying in Paris, he was librarian and privy councillor at the court of Hannover from 1676 until his death. His works encompass mathematics, philosophy, theology, law, diplomacy, politics, history, philology, and physics. In 1675 Leibniz discovered the mathematical principles of calculus, independently from the earlier discoveries of English scientist Sir Isaac Newton. Leibniz also invented a calculating machine and is considered a pioneer in the development of mathematical logic. In Leibniz's philosophy, the universe is composed of countless conscious centers of spiritual force or energy, known as

Name Letters from and to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz within the collection of manuscript papers of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Short Description Documentary heritage submitted by Germany and recommended for inclusion in the Memory of the World Register in 2007. Long Description If the modern scientific world looks back into the mirror of its coming into being, its gaze meets Leibniz – the mathematician, natural scientist, engineer, logician, philosopher, jurist, science organizer and perhaps the last universalist, who still succeeded in uniting in his mind the essentials of the knowledge of his own time and of a time yet to come. “The position of Leibniz at the
beginning of modern science is analogous to that of Aristotle at the beginning of ancient science. Leibniz’s universality is comparable to that of Aristotle …”.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz:
Texts and Translations
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was one of the most distinguished intellectual figures of the early modern period. Celebrated as a philosopher and mathematician, he also made significant contributions to the natural sciences, historiography, legal theory, and comparative philology—to mention only a few of his many interests. He is often described as the last universal genius: a thinker whose range extended to all that was known in his day. A prominent theme in Leibniz's writings is the importance of the systematic organization of knowledge, gathered from as many fields as possible, as a means to continued intellectual progress. Leibniz was instrumental in establishing major libraries in Hanover and Wolfenbttel and scientific societies in Berlin and Vienna. He was fascinated by the application of technology to the solution of both practical and theoretical problems. His working model of an arithmetical calculating machine attracted widespread attention and was the basis of his election to the Royal Society in 1673. In light of his overriding concern for system and method, it is no small irony that Leibniz left no complete or comprehensive statement of his thought. His contributions on a vast array of subjects are found scattered in obscure journals, in hundreds of correspondences, and in a huge collection of unpublished manuscripts, the majority of which are preserved in the Lower Saxony State Library in Hanover. To date, there has been no complete edition of Leibniz's writings. One has been in progress since 1923 (under the direction of the Berlin Academy of Sciences), but it will not be finished until well into the twenty-first century. Only a small portion of Leibniz's writings have been translated into English. Fortunately, these include many of his most important philosophical works. Many interesting texts, however, remain unavailable in English. One of the aims of this site is to serve as a source for new translations of Leibniz's writings.
