Born: June 21, 1646 in Leipzig, Germany Died: November 14, 1716 in Hanover, Germany Baron Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz was born on June 21, 1646 in Leipzig, Germany and he died on November 14, 1716 in Hanover, Germany. Leibniz's father died before he turned six years old, and the school that he was then sent to was no help to him. By the age of twelve, he had taught himself how to read Latin, and had begun on Greek. Before he was twenty, he had mastered ordinary text-books in mathematics, theology, law, and philosophy. He was educated at the universities of Jena, Leipzig, and Altdorf.
Leibnitz was educated at the Universities of Leipzig, Jena, and Altdorf. At Paris, he met Huygens and their conversations led Leibniz to study geometry. He described this as opening a new world to him. He had previously written ideas on various minor points in mathematics; the most impotant being a paper on combinations written in 1668, and a description of a new calculating machine. The Step Reckoner , as his machine was called, was capable of adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and extracting square roots through a series of stepped additions.

Name:
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Dates:
Born: June 21, 1646 in Leipzig, Germany
Died: November 14, 1716 in Hannover Biography:
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a German philosopher and jurist who became known for his theodicy, arguing that this world is the best of all possible worlds which God could have created. This resulted in a number of parodies by skeptical philosophers, the most famous of which was contained in the book Candide by Voltaire Leibniz operated from the premise that philosophy and theology were incapable of contradiction. Nevertheless, the existence of evil seemed incompatible with the existence of an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God. Therefore, he concluded, the existence of some evil was necessary in any world where there also existed imperfect creatures. He also argued that reality is composed of an infinite number of "monads," immaterial and indivisible substances of which no two are exactly alike. He thought that they were conscious sources of spiritual energy which, to varying degrees, mirror the universe. However, although all monads may be conscious, only some monads are self-conscious. A further point of Leibniz's philosophy was the distinction between necessary and contingent propositions. The former he called "truths of reason," which are known to be true because of the law of noncontradiction. The latter he labeled "truths of fact," things which could only be established via empirical observation.

THE MONADOLOGY
by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz
translated by Robert Latta
1. The Monad , of which we shall here speak, is nothing but a simple substance, which enters into compound s. By 'simple' is meant 'without parts.' (Theod. 10.) 2. And there must be simple substances, since there are compound s; for a compound is nothing but a collection or aggregatum of simple things. 3. Now where there are no parts, there can be neither extension nor form [figure] nor divisibility. These Monad s are the real atoms of nature and, in a word, the elements of things. 4. No dissolution of these elements need be feared, and there is no conceivable way in which a simple substance can be destroyed by natural means. (Theod. 89.) 5. For the same reason there is no conceivable way in which a simple substance can come into being by natural means, since it cannot be formed by the combination of parts [composition]. 6. Thus it may be said that a Monad can only come into being or come to an end all at once; that is to say, it can come into being only by creation and come to an end only by annihilation, while that which is compound comes into being or comes to an end by parts.

Leibniz or Leibnitz, Gottfried Wilhelm, Baron von
Leibniz or Leibnitz, Gottfried Wilhelm, Baron von key , German philosopher and mathematician, b. Leipzig. Although known primarily as a philosopher, Leibniz's scholarship embraced the physical sciences, history, law, diplomacy, and logic. The recognition of his work in logic came quite late; manuscripts published in the 20th cent. mark him as the founder of symbolic logic. Born in Leipzig, Leibniz was educated at the universities of Leipzig, Jena, and Altdorf. From 1666 (the year in which he was awarded a doctorate in law) onwards, he served Johann Philipp von Sch¶nborn, archbishop elector of Mainz, in a variety of legal, political, and diplomatic capacities. In 1673, when the elector's reign ended, Leibniz went to Paris. He remained there for three years and also visited Amsterdam and London, devoting his time to the study of mathematics science , and philosophy . In 1676 he was appointed librarian and privy counsellor at the court of Hanover. For the 40 years until his death, he served Ernest Augustus, duke of Brunswick-L¼neburg, later elector of Hanover, and George Louis, elector of Hanover, later
