Julien Offray De Lamettrie From LoveToKnow 1911 JULIEN OFFRAY DE LAMETTRIE (1709-1751), French physician and philosopher, the earliest of the materialistic writers of the Illumination , was born at St Malo on the 25th of December 1709. After studying theology in the Jansenist schools for some years, he suddenly decided to adopt the profession of medicine . In 1733 he went to Leiden to study under Boerhaave, and in 1742 returned to Paris , where he obtained the appointment of surgeon to the guards. During an attack of fever he made observations on himself with reference to the action of quickened circulation upon thought, which led him to the conclusion that psychical phenomena were to be accounted for as the effects of organic changes in the brain and nervous system . This conclusion he worked out in his earliest philosophical work, the Histoire naturelle de l'dme, which appeared about 1745. So great was the outcry caused by its publication that Lamettrie was forced to take refuge in Leiden, where he developed his doctrines still more boldly and completely, and with great originality, in L'Homme machine (Eng. trans.

Destiné à l'état ecclésiastique, il fait ses études chez les Jésuites. Il commence par publier des ouvrages sur des sujets médicaux. Son livre "Histoire naturelle de l'âme" (1745), où il défend des thèses matérialistes provoque un scandale et lui fait perdre sa place de médecin des gardes françaises. Il retourne à Leyde en Hollande où il avait fini ses études, puis est accueilli par Frédéric II de Prusse à Berlin où il reste jusqu'à sa mort. La Mettrie considère que tous les philosophes passés se sont trompés par leur raisonnement sur l'homme a priori. Seule la méthode empirique (Helvétius) lui paraît légitime. L'esprit doit être matérialisé et l'homme n'est qu'un animal supérieur. Dans "l'Homme-machine", il étend à l'homme le principe de l'animal-machine de Descartes et rejette par là toute forme de dualisme corps - âme. Son déterminisme mécaniste l'amène naturellement à rejeter toute idée de Dieu, même celui des déistes avec lequel il ne faut pas confondre la nature. La Mettrie a eu peu de succès pendant son vivant. Voltaire le considére comme "dissolu, imprudent, bouffon, flatteur ". Au XIXème siècle, les marxistes, tentèrent de le réhabiliter.
