Kuhn, Thomas (1922-1996) American historian of science noted for The Structure of Scientific Revolutions After studying Physics at Harvard, Kuhn did his PhD in the history of science and subsequently taught and wrote on the history and philosophy of science at Harvard, the University of California (Berkeley), Princeton and M.I.T. until his retirement in 1991. In his first book, The Copernican Revolution (1957), Kuhn studied the development of the heliocentric theory of the solar system during the Renaissance. In his landmark second book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions Kuhn was a part of a widespread movement interested in Cognitive Science in the post-World War Two period. While sharing an element of social-relativism with Structuralism and Functionalism, Kuhn's theory has the great benefit of disclosing the inner dynamic hidden within an social structure. Kuhn, Thomas S. US historian and philosopher of science, who showed that social and cultural conditions affect the directions of science. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions 1962 argued that even scientific knowledge is relative, dependent on the paradigm (theoretical framework) that dominates a scientific field at the time.
Such paradigms (for example, Darwinism and Newtonian theory) are so dominant that they are uncritically accepted as true, until a 'scientific revolution' creates a new orthodoxy. Kuhn's ideas have also influenced ideas in the social sciences.

According to Kuhn (1970), a scientific discipline can develop in two qualitatively distinct ways. During periods of normal science knowledge grows cumulatively but in times of revolutions progress will be non-cumulative.
Every scientific discipline starts with a preparadigmatic stage. This will be described in section 1. A stage of normal science will be reached when one paradigm becomes prominent. Normal science is by nature paradigm based. Normal science will be encountered in section 2. Inevitably, every normal scientific period will sooner or later result in a crisis. Section 3 will be about scientific crises. One possible result of a scientific crisis is a revolutionary change towards a new paradigm. Revolutions are described in section 4. According to Kuhn, a revolutionary change is far from cumulative. There exists incommensurability between the old and the new paradigm. The last section of this paper, section 5, will be about incommensurability.

Note: I have tried to let Kuhn speak for himself whenever possible. The make is easier to distinguish the quotes from the paraphrases, I have written the quotes in boldface. All references are to the 1970 edition of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
1. A Paradigm is ...? Kuhn baptizes his famous notion of a scientific " paradigm " as originating from the " great works " of science, like Copernicus’s De Revolutionibus Principia. These great works became paradigms because they were " sufficiently unprecedented to attract an enduring group of adherents away from competing modes of scientific activity ," and " sufficiently open-ended to leave all sorts of problems for the redefined group of practitioners to resolve. " (p.10) The activity spurred by such great books goes by the name of " normal science. " " There are ... only three normal foci for factual scientific investigation. " (p.25.)

We just had to take Occam's Razor Metaphysics seriously and thus describe reality from only one substance existing, as Leibniz wrote;
