"...boredom is the root of all evil."
-Soren Kierkegaard-
Danish religious philosopher. A precursor of modern existentialism, he insisted on the need for individual decision and leaps of faith in the search for religious truth , thereby contradicting Protestant dogma and Hegelianism. His works include Either/Or and Fear and Trembling (both 1843). Personality Personality is only ripe when a man has made the truth his own.
At the bottom of enmity between strangers lies indifference.
Memory
The more a man can forget, the greater the number of metamorphoses which his life can undergo, the more he can remember the more divine his life becomes.
Primitive Life Destroy your primitivity, and you will most probably get along well in the world, maybe achieve great success-but Eternity will reject you. Follow up your primitivity, and you will be shipwrecked in temporality, but accepted by Eternity.

Existential Splitting:
Sickness Unto Death
Why are we at odds with ourselves?
Why do we seem to want to go in so many different directions at once?
Why do we feel splintered and split, prevented from attaining wholeness? It is customary to blame this disintegration of selfhood,
this absence of wholeness and balance in modern life,
on the contradictory forces and influences of society.
But these external fragmenting forces and tendencies would have no effect were we not internally weak and vulnerable.

The Educational Theory of Soren Kierkegaard Analyst: Carol Myers RETURN
edited 1/4/08 1. Theory of Value: What knowledge and skill are worthwhile learning? What are the goals of education? We cannot look about for values, we must look inward (S, 26) Truth: boundary between human and Christian ontology is difference between knowledge and faith (M,70) Experience is the "empirical mass" of knowledge like Kant and unlike Descartes and Hegel, knowledge is more than experience alone (M,70) Human knowledge and its objective reality subordinate to subjective actuality as a woman giving her hand in marriage to take her husband's name is not equality but subordination (M, 125) 2. Theory of Knowledge : What is knowledge? How is it different from belief? What is a mistake? A lie? Knowledge is by no means higher than faith (M, 160) K disagreed with Hegel and Descartes that knowledge begins without presuppositions or with doubt (M, 63) Through his experience of anxiety (brought on by guilt), which are the distinguishing marks of freedom, the individual moves away from the original "immediate unity with his natural condition," where he lived in innocence and ignorance, and moves in the direction of knowledge and guilt. (M, 260) Kierkegaard fully appreciates purely "human knowledge"and its objective reality, but through his concentration on the subject he has arrived at a different higher kind of knowledge (M, 125)

Listing articles on an author is often a simple affair. With Kierkegaard this task is suspect. Why? There’s his unsparing disgust for scholars and assistant professors. Kierkegaard thought we should undertake philosophy with fear and trembling. This has led some to ask why we should read him at all. This site is set up with the wish that it might lead you, the reader, through the riddles and mirrors by which Kierkegaard hoped to guide us back to and beyond ourselves in primitivity.

Soren Aabye Kierkegaard : Literary Influences
The following article is one that I contributed to the Biographical Dictionary of Literary Influences: The Nineteenth Century, 1800-1914 . edited by John Powell (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 2001).
KIERKEGAARD, SOREN AABYE (1813-1855). Soren Kierkegaard, Danish writer, was born in Copenhagen in 1813 and educated at the University of Copenhagen (1830-1840) and at Berlin (1841-1842).
Kierkegaard has been subject to much psychological speculationand rightfully so since so much of his work is autobiographical in content. Kierkegaard wrote that the chief influence upon him was his "strict Christian upbringing" ( Journals , 299). His father, who thought he had been cursed by God, passed his own melancholy on to his son. Kierkegaard later had a broken relationship with Regine Olson which exacerbated his feelings of loneliness. He wrote, "It is essentially owing to her, to my melancholy and to my money that I became an author" ( Journals
Kierkegaard's most notable biographer, Walter Lowrie, writes that Johann Georg Hamann was "the only author by whom S.K. was profoundly influenced" (

General Observations About Existentialism
DANISH AND GERMAN EXISTENTIALISM The most important expressions of Existentialism are found in Germany and France. German Existentialism is represented by three thinkers: Barth, Heidegger, and Jaspers. Their common source of inspiration is Kierkegaard's thought, of which there was revival in Germany shortly after World War I. Heidegger and Jaspers are also dependent upon some significant motives found in the writings of Nietzsche. Heidegger felt, in addition, the influence of his teacher, Husserl.

1. Kierkegaard's Life
Borgerdydskolen Either/Or Another very important figure in Kierkegaard's life was J.L. Heiberg, the doyen of Copenhagen's literati. Heiberg, more than any other person, was responsible for introducing Hegelianism into Denmark. Kierkegaard spent a good deal of energy trying to break into the Heiberg literary circle, but desisted once he had found his own voice in The Concept of Irony . Kierkegaard's first major publication, From the Papers of One Still Living , is largely an attempt to articulate a Heibergian aesthetics - which is a modified version of Hegel's aesthetics. In From the Papers of One Still Living , which is a critical review of Hans Christian Andersen's novel Only A Fiddler , Kierkegaard attacks Andersen for lacking life-development ( Livs-Udvikling ) and a life-view ( Livs-Anskuelse ) both of which Kierkegaard deemed necessary for someone to be a genuine novelist ( Romandigter Kierkegaard's life is more relevant to his work than is the case for many writers. Much of the thrust of his critique of Hegelianism is that its system of thought is abstracted from the everyday lives of its proponents. This existential critique consists in demonstrating how the life and work of a philosopher contradict one another. Kierkegaard derived this form of critique from the Greek notion of judging philosophers by their lives rather than simply by their intellectual artefacts. The Christian ideal, according to Kierkegaard, is even more exacting since the totality of an individual's existence is the artefact on the basis of which s/he is judged by God for h/er eternal validity. Of course a writer's work is an important part of h/er existence, but for the purpose of judgement we should focus on the whole life not just on one part.

Introduction
S¸ren Kierkegaard, along with Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche , is one of the fathers of existentialism. Kierkegaard was very productive as a writer, publishing a wide variety of works during his 42 years. Students of philosophy are fortunate, as Kierkegaard kept several journals, most of which survive in print to this day. I strongly advise students to read these works, as they often present a better view than the traditional publications.
Biography
Born 5 May 1813, S¸ren Aabye Kierkegaard was the seventh and youngest child of Michael Pedersen Kierkegaard. S¸ren’s father, Michael, was retired at the time of his son’s birth, having achieved a relatively comfortable position in his community. Michael had risen from serfdom to the new merchant class of Europe. Michael had been a shepard, with little in the way of possessions.

Søren Kierkegaard

St. Olaf College - Kierkegaard Library

Søren Kierkegaard was a Danish philosopher and religious thinker who wrote literary and philosophical essays that reacted against Hegelian philosophy and the state church in Denmark, setting the stage for modern existentialism. Kierkegaard was born in Copenhagen, the youngest of seven children. He spent his formative years under the influence of his melancholic and devoutly religious father whose teachings stressed the suffering of Christ. Kierkegaard went to study philosophy and theology at the University of Copenhagen, where his personal despair grew, leading him to the therapeutic decision to become a cleric and marry his fiancée Regine Olsen, the daughter of a treasury official. Shortly after completing his doctoral dissertation, The Concept of Irony (1841), he broke the engagement, partly for fear that he and his fiancée might lack common philosophic interests, but he gave the impression of acting out of a brutal and indifferent selfishness in order to make the breach definitive. Thereafter he embarked on a life of seclusion and a writer's career that produced a constant flow of books over the next ten years with at least twelve major philosophical essays.
