Name: Karl Jaspers Birth Date: February 23, 1883 Death Date: February 26, 1969 Place of Birth: Oldenburg, Germany Place of Death: Basel, Switzerland Nationality: German Gender: Male Occupations: philosopher
Encyclopedia of World Biography on Karl Jaspers The German philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) wrote important works on psychopathology, systematic philosophy, and historical interpretation. Though he lived to be 86, Jaspers's health was always fragile. From early childhood he suffered from bronchiectasis with cardiac decompensation. This required him to organize his limited energies with great care. Yet he accomplished much teaching and writing under these limitations and was helped greatly, particularly in his writing, by his wife, Gertrud Mayer, whom he married in 1910. In 1909 Jaspers received the degree of doctor of medicine and began to specialize in psychiatry. For 7 years thereafter he worked in the psychiatric clinic attached to the university hospital in Heidelberg. It was here that Jaspers began to work out a classification of basic personality types. This work, influenced further by discussions with his friend Max Weber and by the latter's theory of ideal types, culminated in Jaspers's first major work

Karl Jaspers, 1968.
Horst Tappe
born Feb. 23, 1883, Oldenburg, Ger.
died Feb. 26, 1969, Basel, Switz.
German-Swiss philosopher and psychiatrist. As a research psychiatrist, he helped establish psychopathology on a rigorous, scientifically descriptive basis, especially in his General Psychopathology (1913). He taught philosophy at the University of Heidelberg from 1921 until 1937, when the Nazi regime forbade him to work. From 1948 he lived in Switzerland, teaching at the University of Basel. In his magnum opus, Philosophy (3 vol., 1969), he argued that the aim of philosophy is practical; its purpose is the fulfillment of human existence ( Existenz ). For Jaspers, philosophical illumination is achieved in the experience of limit situations, such as conflict, guilt, and suffering, that define the human condition. In its confrontation with these extremes mankind achieves its existential humanity. He is one of the most important figures of existentialism document.writeln(AAMB2);

KARL JASPERS
"The limits are looked for, behind which there is no additional world and yet where not only nothingness need be. Man seeks clear consciousness of the possible orientation in the world by pointing out that Being itself never appears anywhere in the world or as the world, but only as fragmented being. With this presupposition of the consciousness of limit I am able to live with the world as with that about which pertinent, objective orientation is possible, and yet I need not surrender to the world, but I can live related to Being itself, which I cannot orient in the world."
- Karl Jaspers, Philosophy and Existence
About Karl Jaspers "Karl Jaspers (1883-1969), German philosopher, one of the originators of existentialism, whose work influenced modern
theology and psychiatry as well as philosophy. Jaspers was born in Oldenburg on Feb. 23, 1883. He studied law and medicine and received his M.D. from the University of Heidelberg. He taught psychiatry at Heidelberg University from 1916, turned to philosophy, and held the chair of philosophy until 1937. During most of the Nazi period Jaspers, whose wife was Jewish and who refused to make any concessions to the Nazi authorities, was prevented from teaching. In 1948 he accepted a professorship in philosophy at Basel, Switzerland. In his first major work

Part of The Paradigm of Christ by Masahito Koishikawa.
http://www.actus.org/jaspers.html
Karl Jaspers and the Paradigm Jaspers regards the totality of being as the Encompassing . He distinguishes the two realms of the Encompassing ; the first is Da-sein, consciousness general and Existenz , and the second is the transcendent as God. The philosophy of Jaspers aims to understand this invisible Encompassing through cipher reading. For Jaspers, Reason is the ligament of all the states of the Encompassing within us. If this is true, so is the light to the Encompassing . Light in the Paradigm of Christ, penetrating all the layers of our being and the transcendent, corresponds to this Reason . As the principle of life, light penetrates itself from the archaic impulses to the Reason as such. Jaspers divides the languages of the cipher into three different epistemological levels. In other words, there are three kinds of ciphers depicting the transcendent so that the invisible may become visible. The first language relates to the direct experience of the transcendent . It is an individual's experience of recognition of the transcendent in which the Existenz grasps the totality of life connected to the absolute consciousness . In our language, this is the conversion experience. This is the cipher of a direct impression of the

Biographical History of Existentialism
According to Jaspers, philosophy was not a matter of any particular conclusions on any particular set of issues analyzed through abstract systems, but rather a specific type of thinking about the way the world is and how the world works. An important concept in his works is that of das Umgreifende Another key concept for Jaspers was that of Existenz Existenz creates the boundaries for contemplating the personal subject which does the contemplating.
