A Critique of Gender Within Language
INTRODUCTION

Feminism is a widely misunderstood movement in which many people naively think that it is a tool for equality between women, however the meaning of the term 'feminism' is almost invariably evaded. It is more a study for the individual wherein he or s [he] can make up their own mind, but 'feminism is not a term which is entirely up for grabs, it is scarcely a static label, but t[his] is not to suggest that feminism has no boundaries'.
The dictionary definition for feminism is: 'A movement claiming that women should have equal rights with men'.
I am going to utilize the works of Luce Irigaray, and Eva Hesse as a stance in an attempt to provide and establish a portrayal for greater understanding between gender relations, combining the differential language between the sexes, and how this may or may not affect the deciphering of aspects within life and Art.
THE WOMEN'S MOVEMENT
The Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876 represented a milestone within women's struggles to achieve public visibility in cultural life.

Between East and West From Singularity to Community
Luce Irigaray Translated by Stephen Pluhácek "What happens when a distinguished French feminist philosopher and psychoanalyst takes yoga lessons? Irigaray gets some shocks and some good ideas, too. . . . This is a fresh look at the need for East and West to get together, and Irigaray’s notion of a community without gender wars is important." Library Journal "[Irigaray's] notion that women breathe differently from men carrie provactive implications, and the book offers a fresh approach to women's empowerment." Religious Studies Review "It remains a cause for celebration when a philosopher such as Irigaray not only talks about yoga, but makes it part of her practice." Ascent Magazine With this book we see a philosopher well steeped in the Western tradition thinking through ancient Eastern disciplines, meditating on what it means to learn to breathe, and urging us all at the dawn of a new century to rediscover indigenous Asian cultures. Yogic tradition, according to Irigaray, can provide an invaluable means for restoring the vital link between the present and eternity—and for re-envisioning the patriarchal traditions of the West. Western, logocentric rationality tends to abstract the teachings of yoga from its everyday practice—most importantly, from the cultivation of breath. Lacking actual, personal experience with yoga or other Eastern spiritual practices, the Western philosophers who have tried to address Hindu and Buddhist teachings—particularly Schopenhauer—have frequently gone astray. Not so, Luce Irigaray. Incorporating her personal experience with yoga into her provocative philosophical thinking on sexual difference, Irigaray proposes a new way of understanding individuation and community in the contemporary world. She looks toward the indigenous, pre-Aryan cultures of India—which, she argues, have maintained an essentially creative ethic of sexual difference predicated on a respect for life, nature, and the feminine.

She defends Irigaray's unique form of essentialism and her rethinking of the relationship between nature and culture, showing how Irigaray's ideas can be reconciled with Judith Butler's performative conception of gender, through rethinking sexual difference in relation to German Romantic philosophies of nature. This is the first sustained attempt to connect feminist conceptions of embodiment to German idealist and Romantic accounts of nature. Not merely an interpretation of Irigaray, this book also presents an original feminist perspective on nature and the body. It will encourage debate on the relations between sexual difference, essentialism, and embodiment.

Luce Irigaray's Sensible Transcendental: Becoming Divine in the Body By Agnes Bosanquet
Luce Irigaray's sensible transcendental locates divinity and carnality together, so that the divine comes to represent the accomplishment of the flesh. This is a project of becoming that is simultaneously conceptual and corporeal. In An Ethics of Sexual Difference, Irigaray asks: "Why do we assume that God must always remain an inaccessible transcendence rather than a realisation—here and now—through the body?" (148). The sensible transcendental is a phrase that emphasises the primacy of the body, and its relation to the elements through the senses, in considering questions of transcendence and incarnation. It encompasses both physical sensation and the recognition of a beyond, with an emphasis on becoming and growing, rather than being, in everyday life. In this paper, I consider alternative theoretical approaches to this relation, including Romain Rolland's oceanic feeling and Catherine Clement's syncope. These concepts have in common a concern with questions of the interiority and exteriority of the subject in relation to the world. The subject, to use the imagery of Merleau-Ponty, exists as a hinge or a fold, an articulation between the other, the world and the self.

An Electronic Back Issue ABSTRACT Henri Bergson's philosophy has attracted increasing feminist attention in recent years as a fruitful locus for re-theorizing temporality. Drawing on Luce Irigaray's well-known critical description of metaphysics as phallocentrism, Hill argues that Bergson's deduction of duration is predicated upon the disavowal of a sexed hierarchy. She concludes the article by proposing a way to move beyond Bergson's phallocentrism to articulate duration as a sensible and transcendental difference that articulates a nonhierarchical qualitative relation between the sexes.
