Hypatia was a charismatic educationalist born in Alexandria on 370 AD. She was the daughter of the philosopher Theon, who imparted to his daughter the knowledge of mathematics. She helped her father compose his eleven part observations on Ptolemy's Almagest. She is also believed to have helped her father produce a version of Euclid's Elements which eventually became the foundation for all subsequent editions of Euclid. She wrote commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica, on Apollonius's Conics and on the astronomical works of Ptolemy's. She lectured on mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and mechanics. She is the earliest woman in recorded history to have made such a profound contribution to the development of mathematics, science and philosophy. She based her tradition on the teachings of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, and presented these ideas with a greater emphasis on the importance of science than anyone before her. In 400 Hypatia became the head of the Platonist school. Her accomplishments and discoveries far exceeded those of her contemporaries. She was an extraordinary woman, who had cultivated her mind far beyond any other woman. All accounts describe her as extremely dignified and virtuous. Even though she taught many prominent Christians, and she was greatly admired by many monks, some Christians of the time began to associate her with paganism because of her extraordinarily intelligence. She was soon to become the focus for riots involving Christians and non-Christians alike.

The Great Hypatia of Alexandria Hypatia of Alexandria 355?-415 AD Alexandria, Egypt Brilliant and beautiful Hellenized Egyptian philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and teacher, who was savagely murdered by archbishop Cyril and his fanatical Christian mob. Below is an excerpt from the Evans Academy Reading Room W hen the archbishop under whose influence the monuments and libraries of Pagan civilization were pillaged and pulled down died, he was succeeded by his nephew, St. Cyril, who was even more Asiatic in his sympathies and more hostile to European thought than his uncle, Theophilius. The new archbishop directed his efforts against the living monuments of Paganism the scholars, the poets, the philosophers the men and women who still cherished a passionate regard for the culture and civilization of the Pagan world. The most illustrious representative of Greco-Roman culture in Alexandria about this time was Hypatia, the gifted daughter of Theon, a mathematician and a philosopher of considerable renown. It is said that Theon would have come down to us as a great man had not his daughter's fame eclipsed his. Hypatia was a remarkably gifted woman. Her example demonstrates how all difficulties yield to a strong will. Being a girl, and excluded by the conventions of the time from intellectual pursuits, she could have given many reasons why she should leave philosophy to stronger and freer minds. But she had an all-compelling passion for the life of the mind, which overcame every obstacle that interfered with her purpose. The example of a young woman conquering tremendous difficulties, and becoming the undisputed queen of an intellectual empire, ought to be a great inspiration to us faint hearts. She won the prize which was denied her sex, and became "the glory of her age and the wonder of ours."

(c.355-415 AD) The Richard Dawkins of the classical world, Hypatia of Alexandria was a scholar of great repute. In fact she was the first female scientist whose life was documented in any detail. Her achievements were many, her defence of science against religion staunch, and her death grisly.
The daughter of Theon, Hypatia was educated from an early age and travelled widely throughout the Mediterranean studying the teachings of Plato and Aristotle. By 400 AD she had forged such a reputation that she became head of the Platonist school in Alexandria.
During her life she wrote many books, some in collaboration with her father. These included thirteen volumes of commentary on the

Some quotes by Hypatia: "Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is the best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond." "All formal dogmatic religions are fallacious and must never be accepted by self-respecting persons as final." "Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all." "Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fancies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them. In fact, men will fight for a superstition quite as quickly as for a living truth - often more so, since a superstition is so intangible you cannot get at it to refute it, but truth is a point of view, and so is changeable."

Hypatia of Alexandria
Hypatia of Alexandria was a Hellenized Egyptian female, philosopher, mathematician and teacher who lived in one of the worst times for a person with all the credentials I have just mentioned: The start of the Dark Ages. Although Egypt, as part of the Eastern Roman Empire escaped to the collapse of the Western state, it did not escape the destruction of knowledge and the thousand years of scientific stagnation brought up by the victorious Christian faith.
She was born in Egypt, either between 350 and 370 C.E. She was the last fellow of the Museum of Alexandria, associated with the once Great Library of Alexandria. She lectured in mathematics, philosophy and became head of the Platonist School circa 400 C.E. She is famous for commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica, on Apollonius' Conics and on Ptolemy's writings. None of those works have reached our times (I wonder why)
Hypatia lived the conflict between the dying Hellenistic culture and the rising Christian faith. The days of Julian were long gone. Theodosius "the Great" became emperor in the East in 379 C.E and of the unified Empire in 392 C.E. In 380 C.E. he decreed the end of religious diversity with the Codex Theodosianus 16.1.2. In 381 C.E. he started a campaign to end the remnants of the Arian Christianity. When he finished them, in 391 C.E he ordered the destruction of all hellenistic temples. Patriarch Theophilus complied with this request in Alexandria. Soon the Hellenistic temples and the libraries associated with them were looted and destroyed to its foundations to build Christian churches on top and with their remains. How many people died during those events? No one knows, we do not have records of that (I wonder why). The 95-year-old hierophant Nestorius predicted the "predominance of mental darkness over the human race"

The life and death of Hypatia of Alexandria
When we think of the ancient world generally we think of it as a 'Man's World'. Even much more so than the modern world in which we live now.
Women were generally not the equal of men in any sense. Historians will disagree if this was always the case but it seems clear that in the western world especially during the tumultuous centuries of the early first millennium it was.
Hypatia was a notable exception. She was born sometime in the mid fourth century CE. She was a mathmetician, philosopher and astronomer who lived in Alexandria. By all accounts she was a pagan living in the time when Christianity was in its ascendancy. Hypatia is hailed as a "valiant defender of science against religion"
Her accomplisments are many:
* A commentary on the 13-volume Arithmetica by Diophantus.
* Edited the third book of her father's commentary on Ptolemy's Almagest.

Hypatia (A.D. 379? - 415 Who was Hypatia? In the estimation of some, Hypatia was history’s greatest woman. By all accounts stunningly beautiful, dazzlingly brilliant, yet always modest and kind, in an age when women were but chattel, she was history’s first female mathematician, as well as the first female astronomer, inventor, and natural philosopher. She was the last keeper of the flame of knowledge in that great Alexandrian University — the Museum — the center of all the world’s learning. As the daughter of the last head professor of the Museum, she practically grew up in the Great Alexandrian Library, where all the world’s knowledge was kept, for in addition to being a child prodigy, she was a voracious reader. Already, by the age of womanhood in those days (i.e., twelve ), she was considered to have assimilated the sum total of all significant human knowledge. Books in those days, before the advent of printing, were in the form of hand-written scrolls, each one a priceless original, and when what was left of the Great Alexandrian Library was burned down by the Christians at the command of Christian emperor Theodosius “The Great” in the year , the books were all gone.

Hypatia was born in Alexandria in the fourth century CE (there s disagreement about hypatia of alexandria Article by J.J. O Connor and E.F. Robertson,
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~worc0337/authors/hypatia.html
Philosophers: Hypatia (c.370-415 CE) Links Hypatia was born in Alexandria in the fourth century CE (there's disagreement about her age at death, so that different scholars put her year of birth at either about 370 or about 355CE). The daughter of the mathematician and philosopher, Theon, who taught at the university of Alexandria, attached to the world-famous library, and who seems to have been responsible for Hypatia's education, though she might also have been taught by Plutarch the Younger in Athens. She helped her father with his books on mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy, and became a teacher at his school, eventually becoming its head. (The great library at Alexandria was founded by Ptolemy I at the end of the fourth century BCE. It was said to be the largest collection of books in the ancient world (over half a million volumes on some accounts), and it acted as a copying centre, sending books out all over the known world. During its existence it was damaged, sometimes seriously, by fire on a number of occasions, and finally destroyed in 643ce by Caliph Omar I.) As a teacher she was extremely well-known and respected (it's said that letters addressed simply to "The Philosopher" were delivered to her). She taught from a neo-Platonist standpoint, influenced in particular by Plotinus and the Syrian philosopher Iamblichus of Chalcis (c.250-c.230 CE), but mainly as applied to mathematics and natural philosophy. None of her works survived; we know only their titles, from which it appears that they were mainly commentaries on earlier writers. It has been said that Hypatia's main achievement was the preservation of (especially mathematical) texts which would otherwise have been lost. Most of what we know about her work and life comes from letters preserved by one of her students, Synesius of Cyrene, who went on to become the Bishop of Ptolemais, together with various later romanticised or politicised accounts of her life.

A scientist. Think about this bare description for a moment, and picture the scientist in your mind. Now describe the scientist, and all of the scientist’s characteristics; what was the gender of this professional? I’m guessing, even if you’re a woman, that it wasn’t a Madam Curie that you envisioned, but rather, it was a male scientist. The reality, however, is that there are a growing number of scientists and mathematicians -a specialized type of explorer of the unknown, that are women. In fact, this has always been so, even down to the ancient days of humanity. One such ancient scientist was Hypatia of Alexandria. The exact dates of Hypatia’s life are not bound in a definitive knowledge, though the fact that she lived is certain from the number of commentators who wrote about her in her time. The generalities, however, are enough to know some facts about one of antiquity’s greatest female scientists. Hypatia was born in the middle part of the 4 th century C.E. Her father was Theon of Alexandria, probably the last of the heads of the University (then called Museum) of Alexandria. Theon was a mathematician of great renown who not only taught at the Museum but also commented upon the works of the astronomer Ptolemy (not to be confused with the Northern Greek Pharaohs of the same surname). More importantly, he is best known today for his copies of Euclid’s “Elements.”

Hypatia of Alexandria, written by Maria Dzielska is a book that highlights the fascinating life of the famous mathematician and philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria. Dzielska describes the life and time of Hypatia through many different sources and interpretations of history. She also describes the difficulties involved in producing a biography of a person about whom we are remarkably ill-informed. Dzielska through her book tries to compose an understanding of Hypatia, her accomplishments and her beliefs. Through each of her chapters Dzielska is able to enlighten us on different aspects of Hypatia and the city of Alexandria. Without a broad number of accurate historical sources to choose from Dzielska sufficiently assists us in understanding the life and times of Hypatia of Alexandria.
