  • Hutcheson, Francis b Drumalig, Co. Down, 1694; d Dublin, 1746). British philosopher, professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow University from 1730 until his death. His major work is An Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue (1725). In this he argues that aesthetic (and moral) judgement is founded on a special kind of perception. Just as our sense of sight enables us to see colours directly, so we possess an analogous ‘inner’ sense enabling us to perceive aesthetic or ethical values. To stimulate this inner sense aesthetically, an object must possess the right kind of ratio between ‘uniformity and variety’. Beauty, although a property of the object, also depends for its existence on our subjective engagement. This attempt to harmonize objective and subjective elements of aesthetic experience set a pattern for later British thought in the field.

    Francis Hutcheson
    Philosopher and Teacher
Francis Hutcheson was born in the townland of Drumalig, Saintfield Parish on 8 August 1694, the son and grandson of ministers of dissenting congregations. Educated partly by his grandfather, partly at an academy, he entered the University of Glasgow in 1710, where he spent six years, at first in the study of philosophy, classics and general literature, and afterwards in the study of theology. Hutcheson received his license to preach within the Presbyterian church in 1716. However, some controversy about his appointment to a congregation in Scotland persuaded him to abandon the ministry and begin a life of academia. He spent the early part of his academic career teaching at the Academy of Dublin, while he privately pursued his philosophical studies. In 1725 his name became well known within influential academic circles with the publication of his Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue In 1729 he accepted the Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. He remained at the University of Glasgow until his death, during a visit to Dublin, in 1746.

ROBERT HUTCHINSON OF NEW JERSEY Richard Hutchinson Robert Hutchinson is believed by some to be the possible father of William, who married Ann Simpson, and who can be found in Middlesex County, New Jersey records, as early 1737. This belief is based upon several factors that can be found when doing research on the Hutchinson family in New Jersey. I will try to examine each of these factors below. . The earliest mention of a Robert Hutchinson related to the central New Jersey area is the Robert, who was on board the ship A Henry and Francis, which landed in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey in 1685, which brought Scotch A covenanters who had been banished to the A colonies from the Tolbooth in Leith, Scotland. My research in the existing records from Leith, Scotland support the fact that a Robert Hutchinson was to be removed in the above mentioned ship. This vessel was bound for Jamaica with its A cargo. However, several factors such as payment for the cargo and the ship being blown off course caused the ship to land in Perth Amboy. On the fragmented passenger lists that exist for this voyage, there were apparently several Hutchinsons on board. A John Hutchinson was one of several passengers who died during the above voyage. On Nov 27, 1685, a William Rig, aboard the "Henry and Francis" of New Castle, made his Will. The witnesses for the will were James Dundas, brother of the Laird of Armestonn, James Hutchinson, apothecary, and John Fraser, writing-master. It was proved on Feb 9, 1685-6.

Even the hardened heart of Primate Boulter responded to Ireland's troubles in 1728. Without the intervention of sudden charity, he wrote the Lord Lieutenant in early December, "some thousands will perish before the next harvest" (279). The prohibition against the export of wool had crippled the economy, and unscrupulous absentee landlords prodded ever more deeply into the living flesh of the people. By August the city streets were "crowded with living specteres" in search of food, scavenging dead horses. An anonymous pamphlet suggested instituting a new trade in an existing and plentiful product: poor Irish children—mostly Catholic—could be profitably butchered as yearlings for the tables of the Protestant Ascendancy. The arguments are spookily rational. By applying the logic of investment yields to human bodies, Swift's Modest Proposal points to the limits of reason, and to the space within which human communities can exist.
