Bibliography Abstract The originality of Adam Smith has often been questioned. J.A. Schumpeter commented “that the Wealth of Nations does not contain a single analytic idea, principle or method that was entirely new in 1776.” W.R. Scott went further when he observed “that the order of topics discussed in the economic portions of Hutcheson’s System is repeated in Smith’s Glasgow Lectures and again in the Wealth of Nations.” This paper will show how the ideas on the division of labour discussed by Hutcheson reappear more fully developed in the Wealth of Nations: how the division of labour increases output due to the invention of machines, to the increased dexterity of labour , and to less time being wasted between tasks; how the division of

HUTCHESON, Francis. An inquiry into the original of our idea of beauty and virtue
[London : 1725] Sp Coll 986 It is generally acknowledged that during the first half of the eighteenth century a profound change was wrought in the theory of art and natural beauty. In England, the notion of a separate and autonomous discipline devoted solely to art and to beauty came into being through the concept of "aesthetic disinterestedness". In addition, emphasis in the theory of art shifted from object to subject - from the work of art to the perceiver and critic. Hutcheson, who played no small part in effecting this profound change, in this book gives the basic premise of his aesthetic theory: "the word beauty is taken for the idea raised in us , and a sense of beauty for our power of receiving this idea ."

Hutcheson, Francis, 1694-1746, philosopher
Biographical Information
Occupation, Sphere of Activity Francis Hutcheson, son of John Hutcheson, presbyterian minister of Armagh, was born 8 August 1694 , probably at Drumalig, a township in Saintfield, Co. Down, the residence of his grandfather, Alexander Hutcheson, presbyterian minister of Saintfield. The grandfather had emigrated from Ayrshire, where his family was 'ancient and respectable.' Francis and his brother, Hans, lived with their father at Ballyrea, near Armagh, until in they were sent, for educational purposes, to live with their grandfather. The two boys were sent to a school of classical reputation kept by a Mr. Hamilton in the old meeting-house at Saintfield. Francis was afterwards moved to an academy of James MacAlpine, Killeleagh, where he worked hard at the scholastic philosophy still taught in Ireland. In he went to Glasgow University, where for six years he studied philosophy, classics, literature, and afterwards theology. Upon leaving Glasgow, Hutcheson returned to Ireland, and was licensed to preach. He was about to accept the ministry of a small congregation when he was induced to start a private academy in Dublin. He received offers, probably of ecclesiastical preferment, which he felt bound in conscience to refuse. His 'Four Essays' were published anonymously in

Hume and His Critics !! PHILOSOPHY 5320 Elmer H. Duncan This seminar will be concerned with an in depth study of the philosophy of David Hume. We will read a number of his major works. We will also discuss the way Hume's work was "followed up" by his friend Adam Smith, and the criticisms made of Hume's work by Campbell, Beattie, and (especially) Reid. It is hoped that we can also discuss the reception of Hume's work on the continent (especially in Germany) and in America. Books to buy (in the order in which they will be read):
  • Hume A Treatise of Human Nature (this work will be discussed, but is not required reading, and purchase is therefore optional). Hume Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding Hume- Inquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals. Hume Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion Reid Inquiry into the Human Mind Smith Theory of Moral Sentiments
Class Procedure- Please be ready to discuss these! I'm too old to give 2-1/2 hour lectures. Your grade will be determined by your class participation, and a term paper to be turned in sometime near the end of the course. The paper should show that you've read something, and thought about what you have read. Rather than preparing a syllabus, I am getting together a bibliographical essay, which I hope will be a useful reading guide.
